Ebola lessons: Did prior epidemic experience protect against the spread of COVID-19 in Sierra Leone?

The COVID-19 pandemic has prompted a re-examination of public health preparedness with an emphasis on lessons learned following the West African Ebola epidemic. However, much of this work focuses on technological solutions rather than social learning. Drawing upon anthropological work, this paper examines how Sierra Leoneans prepared for COVID-19 through a lens of "embodied epidemic memory." Findings reveal that while people felt more empowered to respond to COVID-19 due to their past experiences, traumatic memories from the Ebola outbreak also sparked logics of fear and avoidance, driven by m

A framework for addressing Alzheimer's disease: Without a frame, the work has no aim.

Confronting Alzheimer's disease (AD) involves patients, healthcare professionals, supportive services, caregivers, and government agencies interacting along a continuum from initial awareness to diagnosis, treatment, support, and care. This complex scope presents a challenge for health system transformation supporting individuals at risk for, or diagnosed with, AD. The AD systems preparedness framework was developed to help health systems identify specific opportunities to implement and evaluate focused improvement programs. The framework is purposely flexible to permit local adaptation across

Epidemic preparedness and management: A guide on Lassa fever outbreak preparedness plan.

Epidemic prone diseases threaten public health security. These include diseases such as cholera, meningitis, and hemorrhagic fevers, especially Lassa fever for which Nigeria reports considerable morbidity and mortality annually. Interestingly, where emergency epidemic preparedness plans are in place, timely detection of outbreaks is followed by a prompt and appropriate response. Furthermore, due to the nature of spread of Lassa fever in an outbreak setting, there is the need for health-care workers to be familiar with the emerging epidemic management framework that has worked in other settings

Investigation of a swimming pool-associated cryptosporidiosis outbreak in the Kimberley region of Western Australia.

Cryptosporidiosis is a gastroenteric disease caused by the protozoan parasite Cryptosporidium, which manifests primarily as watery diarrhoea. Transmitted via the faecal-oral route, infection with the parasite can occur through ingestion of water, food or other fomites contaminated with its infective oocyst stage. In the months of November and December 2012, there were 18 notified cases of cryptosporidiosis from Broome, Western Australia. The 5-year average for the Kimberley region for this period is <1 case. Interviews conducted by Broome local government staff on the notified cases revealed t…

Addressing these issues requires integrated, multi-sectoral approaches that combine local government action on place-based determinants with systemic and national-level policy reforms. This study lays the foundation for more meaningful community engagement and co-creation of locally tailored, community-led solutions to tackle entrenched inequities.

Application of implementation science for improving the utilization of an international clinical practice guidance on familial hypercholesterolemia.

BACKGROUND: The International Atherosclerosis Society (IAS) published an evidence-informed guidance for familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) that provides both clinical and implementation recommendations. We reference examples of strategies from the literature to explore how these implementation recommendations can be tailored into implementation strategies at the local-level for stakeholders guided by a framework proposed by Sarkies and Jones. METHODS: Four authors of the IAS guidance selected two published exemplar implementation recommendations for detection, management, and general implemen

Yemen's Cholera Epidemic Is a One Health Issue.

Yemen has been faced with the worst cholera epidemic of modern times, with more than 1 million suspected cases and 3000 deaths at the time of writing. This problem is largely due to the longstanding civil war between pro-government forces and the Houthi armed movement, which has severely damaged already vulnerable sanitation and healthcare facilities and systems in the country. It is further compounded by a dire lack of basic amenities, chronic malnutrition, and unfavourable weather conditions. Another contributory component may be aerial transfer by cholera-infected chironomid insects. To con

Perspectives on cervical cancer screening and prevention: challenges faced by providers and patients along the Texas-Mexico border.

BACKGROUND: The Rio Grande Valley (RGV) and Laredo regions located along the Texas-Mexico border consist of seven counties with a population of approximately 1.5 million people and a high uninsured rate (33.5%). Cervical cancer mortality in these border counties is approximately 30% higher than the rest of Texas. The RGV and Laredo areas were studied to better understand the state of access to cervical cancer prevention services along the Texas-Mexico border. METHODS: Data on the population served and the services provided were analyzed to determine the gap between cervical cancer screenings

Exotic mosquito threats require strategic surveillance and response planning.

Mosquito-borne diseases caused by endemic pathogens such as Ross River, Barmah Forest and Murray Valley encephalitis viruses are an annual concern in New South Wales (NSW), Australia. More than a dozen mosquito species have been implicated in the transmission of these pathogens, with each mosquito occupying a specialised ecological niche that influences their habitat associations, host feeding preferences and the environmental drivers of their abundance. The NSW Arbovirus Surveillance and Mosquito Monitoring Program provides an early warning system for potential outbreaks of mosquito-borne dis

Paperbark and pinard: A historical account of maternity care in one remote Australian Aboriginal town.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Maternity care in remote areas of the Australian Northern Territory is restricted to antenatal and postnatal care only, with women routinely evacuated to give birth in hospital. Using one remote Aboriginal community as a case study, our aim with this research was to document and explore the major changes to the provision of remote maternity care over the period spanning pre-European colonisation to 1996. METHODS: Our research methods included historical ethnographic fieldwork (2007-2013); interviews with Aboriginal women, Aboriginal health workers, religious and non-religi

Evaluation of anthrax vaccine safety in 18 to 20 year olds: A first step towards age de-escalation studies in adolescents.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Anthrax vaccine adsorbed (AVA, BioThrax(®)) is recommended for post-exposure prophylaxis administration for the US population in response to large-scale Bacillus anthracis spore exposure. However, no information exists on AVA use in children and ethical barriers exist to performing pre-event pediatric AVA studies. A Presidential Ethics Commission proposed a potential pathway for such studies utilizing an age de-escalation process comparing safety and immunogenicity data from 18 to 20 year-olds to older adults and if acceptable proceeding to evaluations in younger adolesc

Shear redistribution in confined biofilm systems: decoupling structure and function in engineered water environments.

Biofilms in engineered water systems often develop within confined, tortuous flow paths where shear stress is spatially heterogeneous. However, biofilm responses are commonly evaluated using bulk metrics that treat shear as uniform and externally imposed, overlooking how geometric confinement redistributes shear during biofilm growth. Here, we examined how confinement-driven shear redistribution governs biofilm-hydrodynamic interactions in labyrinth microchannels under constant pressure. By integrating time-resolved biofilm-altered geometries with flow simulations, we show that localized biofi

Comparing catch-up vaccination programs based on analysis of 2012-13 rubella outbreak in Kawasaki City, Japan.

During the 2012-13 rubella outbreak in Japan, local governments implemented subsidy programs for catch-up vaccination to mitigate the rubella outbreak and prevent congenital rubella syndrome (CRS). In most local governments, to prevent CRS, eligible persons of the subsidy program were women who were planning to have a child and men who were partners of pregnant women. On the other hand, in Kawasaki City, unimmunized men aged 23-39 years were additionally included in the eligible persons, because they were included in an unimmunized men group resulting from the historical transition of the nati…
