[The relation between p53 expression and lymph node metastasis of breast cancer].

The monoclonal antibody to p53 and a rapid immunohistochemical method were used in this study to detect p53 expression in 50 paraffin-embedded breast cancers and 7 benign hyperplastic diseases of breast. The results of immunostaining showed that 12 (24%) cases of breast cancers were positive and all benign lesions were negative. No significant difference was found between primary and metastatic sites of 11 paired samples of breast cancers in p53 expression, suggesting that the abnormal expression of had p53 occurred before lymph node metastasis of breast cancer. Statistical analysis revealed t

DOT1-like histone lysine methyltransferase is critical for adult vessel maintenance and functions.

OBJECTIVE: Disruptor of telomeric silencing 1-like (DOT1L) is the only known histone H3K79 methyltransferase essential for the development of the embryonic cardiovascular system, including the heart, blood vessels, and lymphatic vessels, through transcriptional regulation. Our previous study demonstrated that Dot1l deletion results in aberrant lymphatic development and function. However, its precise function in the postnatal cardiovascular system remains unknown. METHODS: Using conditional and inducible Dot1l knockout (KO) mice, along with a reporter strain carrying the Geo gene at the Dot1l

Primary splenic involvement in kaposiform lymphangiomatosis: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Kaposiform Lymphangiomatosis (KLA) is a rare, pathologically distinct lymphatic anomaly characterized by abnormal lymphatic channel malformation and a high mortality rate. Previous studies describe primary thoracic involvement. PRESENTATION OF CASE: A previously healthy eighteen-month-old female presented to the pediatric emergency department with sudden onset of petechiae and bruising. Initial CBC demonstrated profound anemia and thrombocytopenia with rapid progression to disseminated intravascular coagulopathy. The child was admitted to the pediatric ICU where hematologic work

Acute intrahepatic lymphangiectasia following liver transplantation: An underrecognized potential etiology for biliary and portal vein stenosis.

Acute intrahepatic lymphangiectasia (IHL) is a pathologic condition characterized by abnormal dilation of the intrahepatic lymphatic vessels and related lymphedema, often resulting from impaired lymphatic drainage. Iatrogenic/non-iatrogenic abdominal injury and hepatic malignant neoplasms are the most common etiology of IHL. It is relatively common following liver transplantation, typically due to surgical manipulation or transient obstruction. In most cases, it is self-limiting and asymptomatic, requiring no specific intervention. To date, there have been no reports of IHL causing severe comp

A case report: mucinous carcinoma of extrahepatic bile ducts with periportal calcification suggestive of lymphatic calcification.

Mucinous carcinoma is a rare subtype of extrahepatic bile duct (EHBD) cancer in which abundant mucin surrounds cancer cell nests. Calcification is often observed in mucus-producing tumors, and we herein report a case of mucinous carcinoma of EHBD with diffuse periportal calcifications. A 92-year-old woman was seen for jaundice. Non-contrast CT showed diffuse semi-linear branching calcifications extending from the hepatoduodenal ligament along the long axis of the intra- and extrahepatic portal veins. A bile duct mass and multiple lymph nodes were hyperintense on T2-weighted MRI images, and per

Stromal transdifferentiation drives lipomatosis and induces extensive vascular remodeling in the aging human lymph node.

Lymph node (LN) lipomatosis is a common but rarely discussed phenomenon associated with aging that involves a gradual exchange of the LN parenchyma into adipose tissue. The mechanisms behind these changes and the effects on the LN are unknown. We show that LN lipomatosis starts in the medullary regions of the human LN and link the initiation of lipomatosis to transdifferentiation of LN fibroblasts into adipocytes. The latter is associated with a downregulation of lymphotoxin beta expression. We also show that isolated medullary and CD34+ fibroblasts, in contrast to the reticular cells of the T

A multidisciplinary approach to management of abdominal lymphatic malformations.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Abdominal lymphatic malformations (LM) are a rare subset of vascular anomaly caused by abnormal development of the lymphatic system. They are classified as macrocystic, microcystic or combination macrocystic and microcystic. Surgical resection, percutaneous sclerotherapy, and medical therapy are all employed to treat these complex and often symptomatic lesions. No standardized treatment algorithm exists currently. The purpose of this study was to establish a multidisciplinary treatment approach to abdominal LMs. METHODS: A retrospective observational study was conducted fr

Filariasis of the breast caused by Brugia pahangi: A concomitant finding with invasive ductal carcinoma.

Extralymphatic filariasis is an uncommon phenomenon that can be caused by several lymphatic filarial species, including zoonotic filaria of animal origins. In this study, we report a case of a 64-year-old Thai woman who presented with a lump in her left breast that was diagnosed with invasive ductal carcinoma. At the same time, a small nodule was found in her right breast, via imaging study, without any abnormal symptoms. A core needle biopsy of the right breast nodule revealed a filarial-like nematode compatible with the adult stage of Brugia sp. A molecular identification of the nematode par

Chyluria associated with nephrotic-range proteinuria: pathophysiology, clinical picture and therapeutic options.

Chyluria denotes the urinary excretion of chyle, which is a lymphatic fluid rich in chylomicrons. Chyle flows from the intestinal lacteals to the left subclavian vein through the thoracic duct. When an abnormal connection between these structures and the urinary tract develops, chyluria appears. The syndrome is often associated with a nephrotic-range proteinuria, and this could be a wrong indication to perform renal biopsy. Chyluria is classified as parasitic or nonparasitic, the former being induced by lymphatic filariasis, whereas the latter is caused by medical, traumatic or inherited disea

Metastatic adenocarcinoma to the uterine cervix from gastric cancer. A clinicopathologic analysis of 16 cases.

BACKGROUND: Metastatic adenocarcinoma to the uterine cervix from gastric cancer is rare, and the clinicopathologic features of this metastasis are unclear. METHODS: A clinicopathologic review of 16 patients with metastatic adenocarcinoma to the uterine cervix from gastric cancer was performed. RESULTS: The ages of the patients ranged from 29 to 57 years, and 81.3% of the patients were premenopausal. Nine of the patients had undergone gastrectomy previously. In 11 patients the histologic type of the gastric cancer was poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma and, in 5 patients, signet ring cell c

Accidents in the surgical treatment of varicose veins.

Serious accidents in the surgical treatment of varices are quite exceptional and it is impossible to say with any accuracy how often they occur. Generally they result from major errors of surgical technique, and arise mainly from: haemorrhaging after the tearing of the femoral vein or because of the loosening of the stump of the saphenofemoral junction, traumatism of the femoral artery, damage of the nervus peronaeus in crossectomy of the saphena parva. Minor accidents are more frequent but here too it is impossible to state a precise percentage. There are four fairly common types of accident:

The anatomy of nuchal translucency at 10-14 weeks gestation in fetuses with trisomy 21: An incredible medical mystery.

Nuchal translucency (NT) is a hypo-echoic region of subcutaneous fluid accumulation in the posterior neck at the level of the cervical spine between the skin and soft tissues found at 10-14 weeks gestation. This ultrasound finding is important because increased NT measurements place the fetus at increased risk for chromosomal and structural abnormalities. It is a fascinating phenomenon that displays the intersection of anatomy, development, and imaging. In addition, with the ever increasing use of ultrasound in anatomy, NT is a readily demonstrable example of how important ultrasound has becom

An Unusual Coexistence: Right-Sided Colon Cancer and Intestinal Malrotation in an Adult.

Intestinal malrotation (IM), a rare congenital anomaly disrupting typical embryonic rotation around the superior mesenteric artery, is exceptionally uncommon in adults, with its link to colon cancer being even rarer. This article presents a case of colonic cancer in conjunction with IM in a 63-year-old male. Image studies and intraoperative findings show signs of IM. Open resection was performed due to concerns about vascular anomalies and abnormal lymphatic drainage. The case underscores the rarity of colon cancer in a malrotated gut, highlighting the necessity of preoperative identification

Acquired lymphangioma circumscriptum in high-grade penile intraepithelial neoplasia.

Lymphangioma circumscriptum (LC) is a rare, benign vascular malformation induced by abnormal lymphatic vessels of the skin. LC might be either congenital or acquired, and is predominantly located on the trunk, buttock, axillary region, or thighs. Penile LC is rare. This case report describes a patient with acquired LC associated with high-grade penile intraepithelial neoplasia induced by human papillomavirus type 66. As the patient had multifocal lesions on the glans penis and prepuce we decided to perform circumcision, followed by electrocoagulation of the lesions on the glans. Electrocautery

Trans-urethral resection of bladder tumor (TURBT) and radiofrequency ablation of renal tumor: Rare etiologies of chyluria.

Chyluria is a rare entity which is caused by abnormal communication between the lymphatic system and the urinary tract, which allows the passage of chyle into the urine. Whenever symptomatic, chyluria presents with lower urinary tract symptoms such as dysuria and hematuria. Multiple imaging modalities can aid in diagnosis such as lymphoscintigraphy, retrograde pyelography, CT scan of the abdomen and pelvis, and magnetic resonance imaging. Numerous etiologies are associated with chyluria among which are surgical interventions. Partial and radical nephrectomy have been reported in a number of sy

Protein losing enteropathy after the Fontan operation.

The Fontan or Fontan Kreutzer procedure is the culmination of staged, surgical palliation of functional single ventricle congenital heart disease, offering the potential for survival and good quality of life well into adulthood. As more patients with Fontan circulation age, a variety of complications involving almost every organ system may occur. Protein-losing enteropathy is a major cause of morbidity and mortality after the Fontan operation, occurring more often in patients with adverse hemodynamics and presenting weeks to years after Fontan surgery. The causes are not well understood, but l

Gastric cancer with multiple intramural metastases and metastasis to the small intestine which eventually developed Trousseau's syndrome: report of a case.

Here we report a rare case of Trousseau's syndrome in a patient with gastric cancer with multiple intramural metastases and metastasis to the small intestine. A 70 year-old male complaining of appetite loss and weight loss of 7 kg within 3 months was admitted to hospital. Esophagogastroduodenal endoscopy revealed an advanced gastric cancer at the pylorus almost occluding the outlet of the stomach, and multiple ulcerative lesions throughout the stomach. A biopsy showed poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma. The patient underwent total gastrectomy. During surgery, part of the distal ileum was fou

Lymphangioleiomyomatosis.

Lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM) is a rare disease of the lungs and lymphatics, which can occur sporadically or in association with tuberous sclerosis. LAM almost exclusively affects females, generally developing before the menopause. The disease is characterised by progressive pulmonary cystic change, recurrent pneumothorax, chylous pleural collections and, in most cases, progressive respiratory failure. Abdominal manifestations include lymphadenopathy, cystic lymphatic masses (lymphangioleiomyomas), chylous ascites and angiomyolipoma (a benign tumour). Survival in LAM is approximately 70% at 1
