OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: The purpose of this systematic review was to critically analyze infectious complications and treatment following transcartilaginous ear piercing.
DATA SOURCES: MEDLINE Pubmed database.
REVIEW METHODS: A MEDLINE PubMed database search using free text, including "ear chondritis," "ear perichondritis," "ear cartilage piercing," and "auricle piercing," yielded 483 titles. Based on set inclusion and exclusion criteria, the titles, abstracts, and full text articles were reviewed for inclusion and underwent data extraction. Pooled outcomes are reported.

OBJECTIVE: Review of articles on efficacy and safety of co-administration of Neisseria meningitidis serogroup C -tetanus toxoid conjugate vaccine (NeisVac-C) with other vaccines.
METHODS: Medline, Embase, ProQuest i Cochrane Base have been searched.
RESULTS: Administration of NeisVac-C with vaccines like Infanrix Hexa, Pediacel, Prevenar, and Synflorix is safe and gives seroprotective titers of the antibodies against all antigens included in the vaccines. No data about co-administration of NeisVac-C vaccine with influenza vaccine, varicella, HPV vaccine have been found.

Drug-induced hepatic injury is a potential complication of virtually all drugs because the liver is central to the metabolic disposition of almost all drugs, although precise mechanisms often are unknown. We report a case of severe acute mixed hepatitis (cholestatic and hepatocellular), probably induced by alfuzosin. This event has not been reported previously (MEDLINE 1990, March 1999). Viral causes, autoimmune hepatitis and biliary tree obstruction were excluded. After discontinuation of the drug, liver function test results returned to normal.

Bowel obstruction is a known complication of Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. It can be caused by adhesions, internal hernia, incarcerated ventral hernia, or intussusception. Sometimes the underlying cause may be unusual. These 2 case reports describe patients who underwent laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass and whose postoperative courses were complicated by small-bowel obstruction due to phytobezoars in the ileum, distal to the jejunojejunal anastomosis. We reviewed the literature by using PubMed and Medline for causes, pathogenesis, classifications, diagnosis, and management.

DESIGN: MEDLINE literature review from 1966 to 1999.
RESULTS: Pelvic inflammatory disease is uncommon in postmenopausal women. It is polymicrobial, often is concurrent with tuboovarian abscess formation, and is often associated with other diagnoses.

A short systematic review was undertaken to establish whether the use of a nasal clip is superior to manual compression as first aid in patients presenting to the ED with epistaxis. Lichenoid drug eruptions can mimic idiopathic lichen planus and other dermatoses. The list of drugs that can cause them is long and growing steadily. Although cutaneous side effects of antipsychotics are rare, various cutaneous manifestations have been reported in association with olanzapine. We present the case of a patient who developed an atypical lichenoid eruption due to olanzapine. A review of the literature in Medline from 1951 to 2007 and in the Indice Médico Español (Spanish Medical Index) revealed no previous cases of lichenoid eruptions associated with the use of this drug.

Isolated fungal infections of the perianal skin are rare and their diagnosis is frequently overlooked. We report a case of a 78-year-old male patient who presented with a friable, violaceous, papulopustular lesion, with heaped-up edges along the anal verge. Biopsy revealed unicellular yeast consistent with blastomycosis. The patient was treated with itraconazole with resolution of this lesion. BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: INO in SLE is uncommon, affecting < 5% of hospitalized SLE patients. A MEDLINE search 1966-2001 revealed only 22 reported cases. INO also rarely presents with diplopia. We report such a case.
CASE REPORT: A 35 year old woman with long standing SLE developed the abrupt onset of diplopia, vertigo and ataxia. Physical examination was remarkable only for the neurologic examination with a left INO and abnormal cerebellar testing. Treatment with corticosteroids and intravenous cyclophosphamide resulted in resolution of her cerebellar and ocular symptoms.

Tropical sprue (TS) is a diagnosis to consider in travelers with prolonged diarrhea and a malabsorption syndrome after return from tropical countries, particularly India and Southeast Asia. TS is an unusual condition in tropical Africa. Textbooks of tropical medicine indicate a low endemicity in Nigeria and a limited number of cases in South Africa and Zimbabwe. A Medline search from 1979 to mid 1998 using "Tanzania and tropical sprue" as key words disclosed no hits. We report herein a case of TS in a European traveler, who lived in Tanzania for 8 months.

OBJECTIVE: To review the literature on priapism following intracavernous injection of PGE1, its management and the physiopathological mechanisms involved.
METHODS/RESULTS: The literature on PGE1-induced priapism available on Medline is reviewed and two cases treated at our hospital are described. The diagnostic and therapeutic algorithms are presented.
