A model protocol for emergency medical services management of asthma exacerbations.

Emergency medical services (EMS) is an important part of the continuum of asthma management. The magnitude of the EMS responsibility is very large, with millions of patients with asthma treated each year by EMS personnel. In response to inconsistencies between the 1997 National Asthma Education and Prevention Program asthma guidelines and a variety of existing EMS protocols on the management of asthma exacerbations, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention convened a workgroup in 2004 to discuss the various opportunities and challenges ahead. At the meeting, and over the ensuing year, th

Bridging the Gap Between Pilot and Scale-Up: A Model of Antenatal Testing for Curable Sexually Transmitted Infections From Botswana.

BACKGROUND: Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) and Neisseria gonorrhoeae (NG) are common sexually transmitted infections (STIs) associated with adverse outcomes, yet most countries do not test and conduct syndromic management, which lacks sensitivity and specificity. Innovations allow for expanded STI testing; however, cost is a barrier. METHODS: Using inputs from a pilot program in Botswana, we developed a model among a hypothetical population of 50,000 pregnant women to compare 1-year costs and outcomes associated with 3 antenatal STI testing strategies: (1) point-of-care, (2) centralized laborator

Isolated Prostatic Hydatid Cyst: A Case Report.

Hydatid cystic disease is caused by Echinococcus granulosus, a parasite that infects humans and might not spare any organ but the cornea; nevertheless, its occurrence in the pelvis or prostate is extremely rare, with only a few reported cases. We report the case of a 25-year-old gentleman, medically and surgically free, with a negative personal or family history of hydatid cystic disease, who presented to urology clinics with progressive obstructive lower urinary tract symptoms and one episode of urine retention. Pelvic MRI and CT revealed a well-defined cystic lesion in the left prostatic lob

Integrating a model of care within a community-based managed alcohol program with indigenous men experiencing homelessness and alcohol use: a retrospective chart review.

BACKGROUND: In Montréal, many members of the Indigenous community are affected by homelessness and substance use, explained in part by the loss of cultural identity. These challenges are compounded by barriers to health and social services, and reduced shelter capacity during the pandemic. In response, an urban Indigenous-led community organization developed a managed alcohol program (MAP) in partnership with a university hospital (UH) addiction medicine team in Montréal, Canada. We describe health outcomes, service access, and substance use among Indigenous men experiencing homelessness and s

Artificial intelligence in assisting pathogenic microorganism diagnosis and treatment: a review of infectious skin diseases.

The skin, the largest organ of the human body, covers the body surface and serves as a crucial barrier for maintaining internal environmental stability. Various microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi, and viruses reside on the skin surface, and densely arranged keratinocytes exhibit inhibitory effects on pathogenic microorganisms. The skin is an essential barrier against pathogenic microbial infections, many of which manifest as skin lesions. Therefore, the rapid diagnosis of related skin lesions is of utmost importance for early treatment and intervention of infectious diseases. With the cont

[Control center team in interdisciplinary multimodal pain therapy].

The topic of this article is the team in interdisciplinary multimodal pain therapy (IMPT) in the context of the development of the team concept. The starting points are historical developments, both social and scientific. After World War II numerous war victims continued to suffer from persistent pain. On the part of medicine, the consequences were the failure of the usual procedures for acute pain and the resulting helplessness. Both the concept of pain as a symptom of physical injury and also the previous treatment options were no longer adequate. Very early on an interdisciplinary approach

Implementation of an embedded behavioral health care model in a pediatric rheumatology subspecialty juvenile myositis clinic.

Youth with chronic medical illness, such as juvenile myositis (JM), require specialized behavioral health care. However, access to such care is challenging due to the youth mental health crisis, which impacts accessibility of mental health services in the community, as well as challenges accessing behavioral health care above and beyond the demands of care related to their JM management. In this paper we describe an embedded behavioral health care model, including the establishment and implementation of such a model, at a pediatric hospital where youth with JM receive medical care in a Center

Immediate postpartum care in low- and middle-income countries: A gap in healthcare quality research and practice.

The immediate postpartum period carries significant risks for complications such as postpartum hemorrhage and sepsis. Postpartum monitoring, including taking vital signs and monitoring blood loss, is important for the early identification and management of complications, but many women in low- and middle-income countries receive minimal attention in the period following childbirth to facility discharge. The World Health Organization recently released new guidelines on postnatal care, which include recommendations for immediate postpartum monitoring. In light of the new guidelines, this present
