This report describes osteotomy and iliac bone graft for malunion caused by failed mandibular fracture reduction. A 27-year-old man was referred 3 months after a motor vehicle accident. At another hospital, two operations had been performed for symphyseal fracture using two resorbable plates. Malocclusion was noted, and panoramic radiography and computed tomography revealed a misaligned dental arch, with a 9.37-mm gap between the central and the lateral incisor of the left mandible. A wafer was made from the patient's dental model, and a maxillary arch bar was applied. Through a lower gingivol

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Mandibular angle fractures fixated with plate osteosynthesis techniques have to withstand the effects of muscle attachments. Individual variations in the craniofacial morphology may alter the biomechanical resistance of the bone-plate construct. The aim of the present study was to determine the influence of variations in the mandibular plane angle (MPa) on the biomechanical stability of sheep mandibular angle fractures (MAFs).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty sheep hemi-mandibles were used. The mandibles were positioned on a test jig that simulated low (15°, group L), normal (25°

PURPOSE: The recent development of bioresorbable bone plates and screws allows plates to be applied to the load-bearing regions of the mandible and to remain in place over time without the need for removal. We hypothesized that the stability of composite plates and screws forged from unsintered hydroxyapatite particles and poly-l-lactide (u-HA/PLLA) is comparable to that of standard titanium fixation systems for the reduction of fractures of load-bearing regions of the mandibular body.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: 40 patients underwent open reduction and internal fixation of the fractured mandibula

Appropriate management of lower 3rd molars is crucial to successful treatment of mandibular angle fractures. A unique case of a patient who presented for initial management of a left mandibular angle fracture with an unerupted lower 3rd molar was discussed in this study. After treatment with open reduction and internal fixation of the fracture, the lower 3rd molar erupted and the patient subsequently developed fungal osteomyelitis and hardware failure. This was successfully treated with hardware removal, maxillomandibular fixation, and combined use of an intravenous antibiotic and oral antifun

INTRODUCTION: Currently, the pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) method is utilized for the treatment of nonunion long bone fractures. Considering the established effect of the PEMF on the acceleration of the bone healing process, we conducted this study to evaluate the effect of PEMF on the healing process in mandibular bone fractures.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: This research was a randomized control trial (RCT) study. The sample consisted of patients with a mandibular fracture who were hospitalized in order to receive closed reduction treatment. The participants were randomly selected and then s

Aim: Malfixed miniplates can impair fracture healing, and the screw pilot holes may widen during repeated fixation trials. This in vitro study explored the extent to which screw fixation of mandibular angle fractures could be improved by augmenting the drilling holes with polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA). Materials and Methods: We measured stabilization by recording specimen displacement under a vertical force of 50 N applied using a hydraulic tester. We included 20 hemimandibles from sheep (average weight 40 kg). The specimens were randomly divided into two groups of 10 and pilot holes were crea

INTRODUCTION: Treatment of edentulous atrophic mandible with severe atrophy is a challenge based on local conditions and systemic diseases confronted by the age group affected. If bone grafting is indicated, it is often used in lateral or inferior aspects of the mandible.
CASE REPORT: A 70-year-old male with a unilateral fracture of the atrophied left mandibular body was managed by lingual bone grafting and inferior border miniplate fixation to prevent two common problems after fracture healing; the need for plate removal before denture fabrication and facial asymmetry in the unilateral body

Mandibulo-maxillary fixation (MMF) is indispensable for mandibular fracture treatment. Various means for MMF have been proposed, of which arch bars are widely considered to be the mainstay. However, disadvantages to this method have initiated a quest for an alternative, leading to the introduction of MMF screws. MMF screws have frequently been criticized for poor stability of fracture sites, root damage, hardware failure, and nerve damage. We retrospectively evaluate the FAMI (Fixation and Adaptation in Mandibular Injuries) screw in mandibular fracture treatment by scanning for clinically and

Peritoneal dialysis can be performed at home, and the transfer of solutes in the blood and other body fluids is slow compared to hemodialysis, reducing the load on the circulatory organs and lessening the frequency of hospital visits. We encountered a male patient in his 70s on peritoneal dialysis for end-stage renal failure who developed obsolete mandibular fracture-associated pseudarthrosis accompanied by osteomyelitis, which was treated with noninvasive reduction and fixation using circumferential wiring after the resolution of inflammation. The inflammation was resolved by an intravenous d

Distant metastasis to the jaws, including the maxilla or mandible, is very rare. Although the mandible is the preferred sight of these rare metastases, it is extremely rare for oral cavity malignancies to present as pathological mandibular fractures. Here, we present a case of esophageal adenocarcinoma metastasizing to the mandible, and the first reported case presenting with a pathological mandibular fracture secondary to esophageal adenocarcinoma. We also review the 9 other reported cases of metastatic esophageal adenocarcinoma to either the maxilla or mandible.

Mandibular fracture in younger children is the most common facial fracture among all the facial fracture in the sequence of condyles followed by symphysis/parasymphysis and body of the mandible. Symphysis/Parasymphysis fracture of mandible can be minimally displaced or severely displaced depending upon the severity of the injury. This case report highlights the simple, reliable method of minimally displaced fracture i.e. modified closed cap splint for stability of the fracture segments in pediatric patients.

A 7-year-old boy presented to the emergency department with bilateral bloody otorrhoea after falling from his scooter. Skull base fracture was suspected. CT showed no evidence of skull base fracture but bilateral mandibular condyle and external acoustic canals fractures. We report this case to illustrate a rare possibility of bilateral external acoustic canal fracture associated with condylar fracture in trauma patients presented with bloody otorrhoea.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have shown the influence of the mandibular third molar on mandibular angle and condylar fractures, but have not comparatively analyzed the impact of the injury mechanism on these fractures. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of the lower third molar (M3) and injury-related factors (fracture etiology and site of impact of the traumatic force) on the risk of mandibular angle and condylar fractures.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study included 615 patients who sustained a mandibular fracture in a 13-year period (from January 2000 to December 2013). T

Trismus is a well-known complication of head and neck cancer treatment. It is defined as a progressive tonic contraction of the muscles of mastication that results in decreased mouth opening. This condition can lead to impairment of speech and eating, malnutrition, poor oral hygiene, and difficulty with dental treatment. Its prevalence in patients with head and neck cancer ranges from 5% to 38%. Different treatments are available to improve muscle length and function. Mouth opening devices along with exercising of the mandible immediately after surgery and/or radiation therapy have been found
