Nineteen children with 21 episodes of acute mastoiditis were treated in our hospital from 1989 to 1998. The diagnosis was based on physical, … italization. Six patients were managed with an adjunctive drainage procedure such as myringotomy or mastoidectomy. The most common complication of acute mastoiditis was hearing loss (31.6%); the second was meningitis (21.1%). Subperiosteal abscess was found in two patients and brain abscess in one. Although acute mastoiditis is an uncommon condition, early diag …

Between 1982 and 1994, 21 patients with malignant tumors of the external auditory canal and middle ear were treated at the Department of Oto … myosarcoma in 1 patient each. External auditory canal tumors were surgically excised, while radical mastoidectomy and subsequent irradiation were performed for the middle ear tumors. The five-year survival rate determined by the Kaplan-Meier method, was 77.8% for patients with external auditory canal tumors and 40% for those with middle ear tumors.

Tuberculous otitis media can present with very nonspecific clinical features. Five cases of tuberculous otitis media are reviewed over a per … r histologically examined nor sent for culture. Persistent otorrhea and recurring granulomata after mastoidectomy provided other important clinical features. All cases responded well to antituberculous chemotherapy. National pediatric otolaryngology practice patterns can highlight high-yield opportunities for quality improvement. Our objective was to ide … riteria. Seven procedures accounted for 80% of case volume, including tympanoplasty with or without mastoidectomy (22.1%), airway endoscopy (19.1%), cochlear implantation (10%), endoscopic sinus surgery (10%), congenital neck cyst resection (8.8%), and palatoplasty (6.5%). The technical complexity of otologic procedures, such as mastoidectomy and ossiculoplasty, necessitates high-fidelity training to navigate intricate temporal bone anatomy safely. This review evaluates the transition from traditional surgical pedagogy to high-tech simulation. We synthesized current data on cadaveric dissection, 3D-printed models, and virtual reality (VR) platforms, assessing their impact on haptic proficiency and clinical skill transfer. Beyond traditional methods, we examine how exoscopic and robotic-assisted systems are reshaping the learning curve by providing enhanced magni…

Acute phlegmonous esophagitis (APE) is a rare disease caused by bacterial infection of the oesophagus, typically involving the submucosal and muscularis layers. Patients may present with chest pain, dysphagia, odynophagia, dyspnoea, fever, nausea and vomiting, making diagnosis difficult. We present two cases of APE, both young females who presented with dysphagia and odynophagia. The first patient had a history of surgery (left mastoidectomy) which might have functioned as a nidus for infection, whereas the second patient had uncontrolled diabetes. CT findings in both patients revealed diffuse…

OBJECTIVE: To determine the outcomes of tympanoplasty surgery using porcine-derived small intestinal submucosa.
METHOD: A retrospective audit was conducted in a hospital setting. Thirty-five adult and paediatric patients who received a small intestinal submucosa graft as part of tympanoplasty surgery were retrospectively reviewed. Patients underwent either simple tympanoplasty (n = 26) or complex tympanoplasty as part of a concurrent otological procedure such as atticotomy and mastoidectomy. The main outcome measures were rate of tympanic membrane closure and change in four-frequency mean air…

OBJECTIVES: The aim of the present study was to describe and evaluate the results of a new technique in endolymphatic sac decompression surgery.
METHODS: Forty-three patients with intractable unilateral Meniere's disease were selected. Endolymphatic sac was identified after simple mastoidectomy, and its lateral layer was incised, using a sickle knife. Outer layer of the sac was turned around and placed under the anterior bony border.
RESULTS: Mean duration of the follow-up was 24 months. Mean tinnitus handicap index, pure tone average (PTA) on thresholds at 500, 1000, 2000, and 4000 Hz, mean…

OBJECTIVE: To identify factors that significantly influence myringoplasty success.
METHODS: A retrospective study was performed of all adults and children who underwent myringoplasty from January 2005 to January 2010 in a teaching hospital. Outcome measures were tympanic membrane perforation closure and air-bone gap closure to within 20 dB HL. The factors assessed were the surgeon grade, pre-operative condition of the ipsilateral and contralateral middle ears, perforation site, perforation size, graft material, and whether simultaneous cortical mastoidectomy was performed. Factors with statis…

The epithelioid variant of malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumours is a rare histological entity, and the occurrence of a malignant periph … eripheral nerve sheath tumour was established. The patient underwent left extended modified radical mastoidectomy and selective neck dissection. Histopathological study of the resected surgical specimen confirmed left-sided extensive tumour involvement of skull base structures, as well as neck nodal metastases.

OBJECTIVES: In this study, we investigate the prevalence of chronic otitis media (COM) in young men.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Twenty thousand … s (n=720; 3.6%) and cerumen (n=3200; 16%). We found out that five (0.025%) of the cases had radical mastoidectomy surgery and 16 (0.08%) of them had tympanoplasty.
CONCLUSION: The prevalence of COM in young men is 1.77%. Although our study has a limitation because all of our samples are young men, the study is unique due to its large sample size.

AIM: To present children who underwent mastoidectomy for congenital cholesteatoma presented as a subperiosteal abscess.
RESULTS: All seven children (age range 7-14 years, six boys) presented with retroauricular swelling, erythema and fluctuation in the mastoid area, and one child also had a mastoid-cutaneous fistula. Five children had otorrhoea, while the other two had normal-appearing tympanic membranes. None of the children had a history of middle ear disease. Four children were treated with antibiotics for a recent episode of otitis media prior to admission. The main findings at surgery we…

Meningitis is a rare clinical manifestation of invasive group A streptococcal (iGAS) disease. Clinical, microbiological and molecular characteristics of 6 consecutive cases of GAS meningitis treated in Haukeland University Hospital in the period 2004-2009 are described. All 6 patients had a primary upper respiratory tract infection, with subsequent mastoiditis in 5, subdural effusions in 2, and cerebral abscess in 1. Five patients needed surgical treatment (myringotomy, craniotomy or mastoidectomy). All patients were treated with a beta-lactam antibiotic in combination with rifampicin. The cou…
