Use of cell-based approaches in maxillary sinus augmentation procedures.

The dimension of alveolar ridge is decreased by bone atrophy and pneumatization of the maxillary sinus after loss of teeth in the posterior maxilla, and sinus augmentation procedures are performed to create bone quantity and quality to ensure the placement of dental implants.Various osteoconductive materials have been used to augment the sinus floor, but these materials are cell-free and require more time for bone healing. Attempts have been made to apply a cell-based approach that uses mesenchymal stem cells combined with an osteoconductive scaffold. Adult stem cells that can be derived from …

Kaposiform hemangioendothelioma arising from the maxillary sinus: a case report.

Kaposiform hemangioendothelioma is a very infrequent, locally aggressive vascular neoplasm, characterized by fascicular spindle cell proliferation. It occurs almost exclusively in infants and adolescents, and is often associated with Kasabach-Merritt phenomenon. The tumor is predominantly located subcutaneously or in the deep soft tissue of the extremities and trunk, peritoneum, or retroperitoneum. However, this tumor can sometimes be located on the head and neck. We report a case of kaposiform hemangioendothelioma of the maxillary sinus in a 4-month-old female infant presenting with cheek swe…

[Experimental study of maxillary sinus lifting with tissue engineered bone].

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of tissue engineering bone in maxillary sinus lifting. METHODS: The marrow stromal stem cells of dog were cultured in DMEM containing 100 m1/L fetal bovine serum and induced to differentiate to osteoblasts, which were then inoculated together with Bio-Oss for 5 days. Sixteen dog's bilateral maxillary sinus were elevated. One side was grafted with a compound of BMSC and Bio-Oss and the other side grafted with Bio-Oss alone. The samples were studied by gross, CT, histomorphology and histomorphometrical analysis at the 30th, 90th day after the operation. t-test …

Bilateral maxillary sinus hypoplasia and aplasia: radiological and clinical findings.

Maxillary sinus hypoplasia (MSH) is classified into three types depending upon embryological development of the sinus and uncinate process. Type III MSH is characterized by a near-absence of the uncinate process and an almost absent cleft-like sinus. Bilateral maxillary sinus aplasia or severe hypoplasia with associated paranasal sinus abnormalities is extremely rare. Two cases with severe maxillary sinus hypoplasia/aplasia (one of them with other associated paranasal sinus abnormalities) are presented in this article. This extremely rare abnormality should be kept in mind to prevent misdiagno…

[Dental-radical cysts, a rare aetiology of maxillary sinus opacity].

OBJECTIVE: To specify CT scan roll in diagnosis of radicullar cyst invading maxillary sinus. METHODS: Two cases of 23 and 34-year-old men presented with facial injury and sinusitis was explored by CT scan. RESULTS: CT scan showed in both patients a cystic lesion, developing into the maxillary sinus around a tooth apex and limits by a double dense thin rim. CONCLUSION: CT scan permits diagnosis of radicular cyst invading maxillary sinus, in the event of obscured maxillary sinus, when double dense thin rim corresponding to the repulsed wall of the sinus is looking.

Chronic maxillary sinusitis. Energy metabolism in sinus mucosa and secretion.

The energy metabolism in maxillary sinus mucosa and secretion from 41 patients with, in most cases, recurrent or chronic sinusitis was studied and compared with that in mucosal samples from patients with no previous history of sinus abnormality or infection. In freeze-dried samples, glucose and lactate were measured by enzymatic assays and adenine nucleotides by HPLC. In chronic sinusitis the lactate concentration in the mucosa was increased, probably as a result of increased glycolysis or of impaired diffusion within the mucosa. The lactate concentrations in purulent and non-purulent secretio…

[The indications for revision radical maxillary sinus surgery (author's transl)].

Surgery of the maxillary sinus is one of the commonest in otorhinolaryngology. The classical Caldwell-Luc procedure however is not infrequently followed by infraorbital or some other facial neuralgia or discomfort. In 1976,246 patients were assessed for revision maxillary sinus surgery, and the symptomatology, clinical, transnasal endoscopic and radiological (polytomography) findings were documented. 59 revision operations were performed and a critical analysis of the preoperative, operative and postoperative findings are presented. Polytomography together with sinus endoscopy is a very valuab…

Sinonasal Cholesteatoma Presenting Within the Maxillary Sinus: A Case Report.

OBJECTIVES: Epidermal inclusion cysts are a common type of benign cutaneous cyst. When located in the mastoid cavity, they are more commonly known as cholesteatomas. However, it is extremely rare to be present within the paranasal sinuses, with 20 known cases involving the maxillary sinus. This is a case presentation of an epidermal inclusion cyst of the maxillary sinus, describing its clinical presentation, identifying pathological correlations, and highlighting the importance of early recognition and management. STUDY DESIGN: A case report. METHODS: A retrospective review of the medical re…
