Unilateral nasal allergic reactions increase bilateral sinus eosinophil infiltration.

We have previously shown that unilateral nasal challenge with antigen causes an increase in the number of eosinophils in the ipsilateral maxillary sinus. Here we aimed to determine whether there was an eosinophil response in the contralateral maxillary sinus after unilateral nasal challenge with antigen. Twenty subjects with a history of seasonal allergic rhinitis and a positive nasal challenge to ragweed or grass allergens were studied outside of their allergy season. Catheters were placed in both maxillary sinuses and the subjects were challenged with antigen via the left nostril. The subjec

Formation and enlargement of the paranasal sinuses in normal and cleft lip and palate human fetuses.

OBJECTIVE: Comparisons of paranasal sinus morphology between humans with and without cleft lip and palate (CLP) have yielded conflicting opinions regarding size differences. Although postnatal samples have been investigated, no studies have compared paranasal sinus volumes between cleft and noncleft human fetuses. METHOD: The nasal cavities of 20 'normal' and 9 CLP human fetuses (8-21 weeks' postmenstrual age) were examined to assess prenatal volumetric changes of the maxillary sinuses, anterior and posterior ethmoidal air cells, and sphenoidal sinuses. Lengths and volumes of right and left m

A Giant Maxillary Mucocele Presenting Left Cheek Swelling.

A paranasal sinus mucocele is an epithelial-lined, mucus-containing sac that completely fills the sinus and forms an expandable cystic structure. It most commonly affects the frontal and ethmoidal sinuses, and rarely the maxillary and sphenoid sinuses. Orbital displacement or external disfigurement resulting from the expansion of the frontal or ethmoid sinuses is common; however, facial asymmetry caused by maxillary bone remodeling is rare. We describe a case of large maxillary sinus mucocele that destroyed the maxillary sinus bony wall, resulting in notable left cheek swelling and disfigureme

Acidic glycosaminoglycans in the ground substance in paranasal sinus diseases.

Acidic glycosaminoglycans (AGAG) in the normal maxillary sinus mucosae were analysed by electrophoretic separation and densitometric quantitation, and then compared with those in chronic maxillary sinusitis, nasal polyps and maxillary sinus cancer. The total amount of AGAG in the edematous maxillary sinusitis and nasal polyps increased significantly. Both increases were almost twice as large as the normal content. When the changes of each AGAG in the total amount were compared with the normal content, chondroitin sulfate A and C showed the most conspicuous increase, chondroitin sulfate B was r…

Prevalence of sinusitis signs in a non-ENT population.

Relatively little is known about the prevalence of sinusitis in a general population. Patients with suspected intracranial neurological disease can be considered as representative of the general population. On magnetic resonance imaging nearly 60% of the sinuses were affected. If the most common lesion (a maxillary polyp or cyst) was excluded, still 40% of the sinuses were affected. Above all the maxillary sinuses are involved with 40% abnormal images followed by the anterior ethmoidal sinuses with 14%. The other sinuses are less likely to be affected with 2.5% of the sphenoidal, 2% of the fro

2D-to-3DMaxiDeform: A computer-aided approach for 3D construction of maxillary sinus from PA and lateral X-ray images.

3D volume construction of the maxillary sinus is important for understanding the 3D surface morphology of the maxillary sinuses and detecting changes or obstruction in sinuses. It is important to detect the pathological conditions affecting the sinuses and to determine the treatment outcomes. The cases of sinusitis and various other pathoses in maxillary sinuses are getting comparatively higher than in other sinuses. Therefore, analysis of maxillary sinus structure has some clinical importance. 3D volume construction from Computed Tomography (CT) can help in the volumetric study of the maxilla

Chronic sinusitis-associated antrolith.

An antrolith is a calcified mass found in the nasal cavity or sinus, usually maxillary, described in literature as a rare phenomenon. Its presenting symptoms are variable and include symptoms associated with chronic sinusitis. We describe a 66 year old man with chronic sinusitis who presented with facial pain and epistaxis and upon further evaluation was found to have an antrolith of the left maxillary sinus.

Relationship between Anatomical Variations of Sinonasal Area and Maxillary Sinus Pneumatization.

INTRODUCTION: Maxillary sinuses are among the largest paranasal sinuses with various shapes and volumes. The dimensions and volumes of maxillary sinuses play an important role in the surgical treatment plan. The higher levels of pneumatization of alveolar bone lead to the increase of odontogenic sinusitis which cause problems in dental implantation. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the relationship between maxillary sinus volume and pneumatization and anatomical factors. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, computed tomography (CT) images of the healthy maxillary sinus

[The ethmoiditis of the child and the irrigation treatments by Proetz in short general anaesthesia (author's transl)].

From the anatomy of the sinuses in children and the follow-up of inflammatory diseases one can assume that in most cases the infection develops primarily in the ethmoid. We therefore believe that the diagnosis of chronic maxillary sinusitis in children is mostly wrong as well as the decision to operate upon the maxillary sinus before sanation of the ethmoid sinuses. The term pyosinus should be reintroduced to facilitate the differential diagnosis from sinusitis. Analogous to irrigation treatment of the maxillary sinus the displacement-method by Proetz is the only possible irrigation for the et…

Dental disease: a frequently unrecognized cause of maxillary sinus abnormalities?

OBJECTIVE: Periodontal disease may be a frequently unrecognized cause of maxillary sinus disease. The purposes of this study were to determine if maxillary sinus disease is more prevalent in patients with periodontal disease than in an age-and-sex-matched control group and to show radiographically an association of focal maxillary sinus disease with periodontal disease. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Maxillary DentaScans (General Electric Medical Systems, Milwaukee, WI) of 84 patients (168 maxillary sinuses) with periodontal disease were retrospectively evaluated for the simple presence or absence of

Nonhealing orbital floor fracture in a pediatric patient: A unique presentation of pseudo-silent sinus syndrome.

Silent sinus syndrome was first described as spontaneous enophthalmos and hypoglobus associated with subclinical maxillary sinusitis without prior trauma or surgery. This clinical entity has later been described after trauma in which damage to the ostiomeatal complex leads to atelectasis of the maxillary sinus. We report a case of a 14-year-old boy who presented 4 years after sustaining a non-operative orbital floor fracture with enophthalmos and transient diplopia. Computed tomography (CT) demonstrated enlargement in size of the original orbital floor fracture and bilateral maxillary sinus di…

Correlations between anatomic variations of maxillary sinus ostium and postoperative complication after sinus lifting.

OBJECTIVES: The maxillary sinus mucosa is reported to recover to preoperative sterility after sinus floor elevation. However, when drainage of maxillary sinus is impaired, recovery can be delayed and maxillary sinusitis can occur. Therefore, in this study, we investigated the correlations between anatomic variants that can interrupt the ostium of the maxillary sinus and incidence of complication after sinus lifting. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The subjects are 81 patients who underwent sinus lifting in Wonkwang University Dental Hospital (Iksan, Korea). Computed tomography (CT) images of the subje…

Effect of antibiotic therapy on nasal nitric oxide concentration in children with acute sinusitis.

Recently, it has been demonstrated that paranasal sinuses are an important site of nitric oxide (NO) production in the upper airways. The aim of this study was to evaluate the NO nasal concentration in children with acute maxillary sinusitis before and after treatment with antibiotic therapy. We performed NO nasal measurements in 16 children 4 to 13 yr of age with acute maxillary sinusitis and compared values with 16 age- and sex-matched healthy control subjects. The diagnosis of acute sinusitis was done by clinical signs and symptoms in addition to radiographic examination. NO nasal concentra…

Endoscopic sinus surgery for otolaryngological complications associated with dental and oral surgical treatment: a report of three illustrative cases.

Maxillary sinusitis is one of the most serious complications associated with dental implantation. When local dental treatment with or without antibiotics is not effective, Caldwell-Luc operation is often performed by an oral surgeon. We propose that endoscopic sinus surgery should be employed more widely as the first surgical treatment of choice for odontogenic maxillary sinusitis. This surgery aims to restore ventilation and drainage of paranasal sinuses by correcting the anatomical structures in the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses intranasally. Unlike Caldwell-Luc procedure, the mucosa in…
