The perception and practice of routine lingual flap retraction in lower third molar surgery among oral and maxillofacial surgeons in Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: Lingual nerve injury is a known complication of mandibular third molar (M3M) surgery, and retraction of the lingual flap is reported to reduce the incidence of this complication. However, there is no global consensus on the routine retraction of lingual flap. AIM: The aim of the study was to assess the perception and practice of lingual flap retraction amongst oral and maxillofacial surgeons in Nigeria. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cross-sectional national survey was conducted amongst 122 oral and maxillofacial surgeons in Nigeria from January 2023 to March 2023 using a validated,

Advances in Three-Dimensional Printing for Craniomaxillofacial Trauma Reconstruction: A Systematic Review.

Craniomaxillofacial (CMF) fractures present significant challenges for plastic surgeons due to their intricate nature. Conventional methods such as autologous bone grafts have limitations, necessitating advancements in reconstructive surgery techniques. This study reviewed the use of three-dimensional printing for CMF trauma reconstruction using human studies. A systematic search of PubMed, EMBASE, and Google Scholar was conducted in February 2024 for case reports, case series, and clinical trials related to CMF trauma reconstruction using three-dimensional printing technology. The authors' sy

[Etiopathogenic and clinical aspects of asymmetry].

Complex dysmorphies, asymmetries can affect the various elements of the stomatognathic system: cranial base, maxilla, mandible, musculature and dental arches, in the three dimensions of space. Their etiopathogenesis, as well as their clinical forms, vary considerably. Dysembryopathies, growth disorders, TMJ damages, postural or functional disorders and dental anomalies can create, according to their severity and their moment of appearance, severe or minor facial asymmetries, or asymmetries of the arches. An exo- and endobuccal clinical examination endeavors to specify the localization and the

Maxillofacial and mandibular fractures.

Any traumatic event that produces maxillofacial and/or mandibular fractures generally results in gross and usually severe patient disfigurement and often results in the patient's inability to eat and drink. These fractures are exceptionally rewarding cases as simple techniques may be performed resulting in a successful functional outcome (ability to eat and drink) within a very short period of time (24 hours) after fracture stabilization. A markedly improved cosmetic appearance follows shortly thereafter once inflammation and edema resolve. The primary principle of fracture treatment, ie, prov

Epidemiology of facial fracture injuries.

PURPOSE: Injuries resulting from accidents are a leading cause of mortality and morbidity. The objective of this study was to present epidemiologic estimates of hospital-based emergency department (ED) visits for facial fractures in the United States. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The Nationwide Emergency Department Sample for 2007 was used. All ED visits with facial fractures were selected. Demographic characteristics of these ED visits, causes of injuries, presence of concomitant injuries, and resource use in hospitals were examined. All estimates were projected to national levels and each ED visi

Factitial pemphigus-like lesions.

The maxillofacial region is rarely subjected to self-inflicted conditions such as factitious disease. Nasal ulceration, facial emphysema, periorbital ecchymosis, mandibular subluxation, gingival and mucosal ulceration, dental and salivary gland pain and glossopharyngeal neuralgia have been reported as possible manifestations of factitious disease. We report a case of a young woman who presented with unilateral bullous and ulcerative oral and erythematous facial lesions that were initially diagnosed as pemphigus vulgaris but was later determined to be secondary to self-inflicted injuries. To th

Oral Rehabilitation of Patients Sustaining Orofacial Injuries: The UPenn Initiative.

Tissue injuries in the oral and maxillofacial structures secondary to trauma, warfare, ablative cancer, and benign tumor surgery result in significant losses of speech, masticatory and swallowing functions, aesthetic deformities, and overall psychological stressors and compromise. Optimal oral rehabilitation remains a formidable challenge and an unmet clinical need due to the influence of multiple factors related to the physiologic limitations of tissue repair, the lack of site and function-specific donor tissues and constructs, and an integrated team of multidisciplinary professionals. The ad

Management and subsequent 13-year progress of a mandibular fracture with malocclusion in a child--case report.

Under acute conditions, maxillofacial injuries may be treated without the opportunity for an assessment of occlusal irregularities, even when there are mandibular fractures, because life-threatening injuries have priority over occlusion. Consequently, mandibular fractures may result in post-trauma malocclusion and facial deformity. The case history reported is of a male patient who had been involved in a traffic accident in childhood and suffered mandibular fractures. The initial incomplete management resulted in persistent deformation of the mandible, disturbance of dental occlusion and diffi…

Visual Acuity in Orbital Floor Fractures: Does Surgical Subspecialty Management Matter?

PURPOSE: At the time of this writing, there is no consensus regarding orbital floor fracture (OFFx) management. Proper management of OFFxs is imperative to help prevent well known complications and the possibility of decreased visual acuity (VA). The VA outcomes have been largely underreported in the literature. The current study identifies the complications of the different subspecialty management including VA outcome. METHODS: A retrospective chart review study was performed to identify patients who suffered an OFFx and were managed by ophthalmology alone or in conjunction with either ENT o
