Measles continues to be a significant cause of morbidity and mortality among children in Southern Ghana although at a much lower level than a decade earlier. The major indications for measles admissions and the mortality associated factors of pneumonia, malnutrition, and diarrhea complicated by dehydration, however remain the same. In early 1990 an outbreak of measles occurred in Kerman City (population 257,284), Iran. Overall 745 cases were identified, four of whom died (case fatality ratio was 5.4 per thousand). Illness was limited, primarily, to children below 15 years of age: 166 (22.3%) cases were in children under five years, 573 (77%) in those aged between five and 14 years and six (0.8%) were above 15 years of age. In this report the literature on all cases of documented measles with hepatobiliary disease was reviewed to describe the characteristics of measles associated hepatitis. We found 27 patients described. Their age ranged from 9 to 59 years. Male to female ratio excluding military facilities was 1:1. During 1988 through 1990, California experienced its worst measles epidemic in more than a decade, with 16,400 reported cases, 3,390 hospital admissions, and 75 deaths. More than half of the patients were younger than 5 years; the highest incidence was among infants younger than 12 months. Children with measles seen at our hospital had an initial electrocardiogram (ECG) and a repeat after 3 months. The patients were aged 5 months to 8 years (mean 19 months). The ECG changes observed after clinical recovery included T-wave inversion in eight patients (16%), flattening in eight patients (16%), prolonged PR interval in six (12%), prolonged Q-Tc in three (6%) and low QRS amplitude in four (8%). We report a case of acute myelitis that developed in a seven-year-old girl with measles. Attention is drawn to the isolated occurrence of this complication in our patient who had no other neurologic abnormalities, and specifically no encephalitis, whereas spinal cord involvement in measles is usually overshadowed by prominent manifestations of encephalitis. Furthermore, we point out that intrathecal production of antibodies may occur but does not militate against the immunoallergic mechanism usually thought to be involved in this type of disease.

A study of antibodies against measles virus and other viral agents is made to investigate possible existence of a false measles or "measles-like" in 48 children with this disease during an epidemic. Two cases of a very rare complication of rubella i.e. a strictly spinal cord lesion developing during the course of the viral infection, are reported. The Authors have assayed in this work the antimeasles antibodies in serum and CSF in subject affected by M.S. and controls. The M.S. patients have been subdivided in two groups with and without immunosuppressive therapy. In 27% out of 48 patients production intrathecal antimeasles antibodies was demonstrated.
