An Unpleasant Souvenir: Whipworm as an Incidental Finding During a Screening Colonoscopy.

Trichuriasis is a neglected tropical disease caused by Trichuris trichiura that spreads through the ingestion of embryonated eggs in contami … d with biopsy forceps during a colonoscopy; however, most patients require a course of albendazole, mebendazole, or ivermectin. We describe a unique case of T trichiura as an incidental finding during a screening colonoscopy. The whipworms were retrieved using biopsy forceps and the patient was treated with albendazole. At the time of the colonoscopy, the pat …

Alveolar and cystic echinococcosis: towards novel chemotherapeutical treatment options.

Echinococcus granulosus and Echinococcus multilocularis are cestode parasites, of which the metacestode (larval) stages cause the neglected diseases cystic echinococcosis (CE) and alveolar echinococcosis (AE), respectively. The benzimidazoles albendazole and mebendazole are presently used for the chemotherapeutical treatment, alone or prior to and after surgery. However, in AE these benzimidazoles do not appear to be parasiticidal in vivo. In addition, failures in drug treatments as well as the occurrence of side-effects have been reported, leading to discontinuation of treatment or to progres…

Strongyloidosis is an parasitic disease, caused by an intestinal nematode endemic in tropic and subtropic regions. In Central Europe it occu … gyloides stercoralis. An autochthonous mode of infection was assumed. After starting treatment with mebendazole eosinophilia and rash gradually disappeared. The laboratory finding of eosinophilia in patients with gastrointestinal symptoms or exanthema should prompt the differential diagnosis of a parasitosis. Stool examination is necessary to find rare autoch …

Spinal hydatid disease.

Vertebral hydatid cysts are rare and found in less than 1% of all the cases of hydatidosis. Neural compression is common in vertebral hydati … val of the cysts and affected bone. The surgical area needs to be irrigated with hypertonic saline. Mebendazole or albendazole therapy seems to retard the recurrences and control the disease.

[Peritoneal echinococcosis].

Secondary peritoneal echinococcosis was recorded from 50 in 312 patients (16 per cent) who had been hospitalised for liver echinococcosis. Hydatido and peritoneal hydatidiosis were recorded from 34 of these patients and thus accounted for the two most common pathological forms of secondary peritoneal echinococcosis, according to Dévè. Peritoneal echinococcosis usually is not diagnosed until conspicuous symptoms grow manifest due to cyst growth or other complications. Positive responses were recorded from all the above cases to laboratory tests (eosinophilia in over five to nine per cent) and w

[Surgical treatment of complicated hepatic echinococcosis in two Bulgarian citizens at two surgical departments in the Czech Republic].

Echinococcosis, also referred to as hydatidosis, is a parasitic infection caused by the tapeworm Echinococcus in its larval stage. It has worldwide distribution and endemic areas in Europe include especially the regions surrounding the Mediterranean Sea. In the Czech Republic, its incidence tends to be quite rare. Although it may affect any organ or tissue in the human body, the liver (60%) and lungs (20%) are the most frequently affected sites. The authors present two cases of Bulgarian patients with hepatic echinococcosis operated on the same day at two different surgical departments in the

Anti-nematode activity of sixteen compounds against Trichinella spiralis in mice--a possible new screen for macrofilaricides.

Combined medical and surgical therapy: a new approach to abdominal hydatidosis.

The experience with 28 patients affected by hepatic and abdominal hydatidosis and treated by combined medical and surgical therapy is reported. All the patients were subject to preoperative and postoperative medical therapy with mebendazole (50 mg/kg/daily). The percentage of living scolices in hydatid fluid obtained during surgery, evaluated microscopically and by mice inoculation, was lower in patients treated medically than in patients operated on without pre and postoperative medical therapy. These data support the efficacy of the preoperative medical therapy in order to decrease the biolo…

Gastrointestinal infection due to Anisakis simplex in southern Italy.

The authors present four cases of infection due to Anisakis in an area where people are prone to infectious diseases transmitted by raw fish, but in which the presence of this parasite has never been reported. Three of four cases were discovered accidently during surgical procedures for co-existing abdominal pathologies. Raw fish was apparently not involved in all patients. Characteristics of the patients are discussed.
