Light-mediated perturbations of circadian timing and cancer risk: a mechanistic analysis.

In industrialized countries, certain types of cancer, most notably, breast and prostate, are more frequent than in poorly developed nations. This high cancer frequency is not explained by any of the conventional causes. Within the past decade, numerous reports have appeared that link light at night with an elevated cancer risk. The three major consequences of light at night are sleep deprivation, chronodisruption, and melatonin suppression. Each of these individually or in combination may contribute to the reported rise in certain types of cancer. In this article, the potential mechanisms unde

Analysis of vascular gene expression in arthritic synovium by laser-mediated microdissection.

OBJECTIVE: In rheumatoid arthritis (RA), formation of new blood vessels is necessary to meet the nutritional and oxygen requirements of actively proliferating synovial tissue. The aim of this study was to analyze the specific synovial vascular expression profiles of several angiogenesis-related genes as well as CD82 in RA compared with osteoarthritis (OA), using laser-mediated microdissection (LMM). METHODS: LMM and subsequent real-time polymerase chain reaction were used in combination with immunohistochemical analysis for area-specific analysis of messenger RNA (mRNA) and protein expression

Analysis of pathways mediating preserved vision after striate cortex lesions.

This study investigated the neural substrates of preserved visual functioning in a patient with homonymous hemianopsia and Riddoch syndrome after a posterior cerebral artery stroke affecting the primary visual cortex (area V1). The limited visual abilities of this patient included above-chance verbal reports of movement and color change as well as discrimination of movement direction in the hemianopic field. Functional magnetic resonance imaging showed that motion and color-change stimuli presented to the hemianopic field produced activation in several extrastriate areas of the lesioned hemisp

Protein expression analysis of drug-mediated hepatotoxicity in the Sprague-Dawley rat.

This study has investigated the protein changes in rat liver elicited by a group of model hepatotoxicants, methapyrilene, cyproterone acetate and dexamethasone and offers a compelling argument in support of the use of two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and mass spectrometry for the identification of compound specific biomarkers. The different treatments caused distinct changes to the rat liver proteome. Many of the protein changes could be associated with the known pharmacological and toxicological mechanisms of action of these drugs, whereas for other proteins, the rationale b

Decoding Links between Gut Microbiota and Metabolic-associated Fatty Liver Disease: Meta-analysis and Mediation Study Uncover Species-specific Taxa and a Novel Bile Acid Mediator.

OBJECTIVE: Previous Mendelian randomization (MR) studies have suggested an association between the gut microbiome and metabolic-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD). However, the reliance on 16S rRNA sequencing data has led to inconsistent findings and limited species-level insights. To address this, we conducted a de novo MR analysis using species-level shotgun metagenomic data, combined it with a meta-analysis to consolidate the existing evidence, and explored metabolite-mediated pathways. METHODS: Bidirectional MR analyses were performed between 883 gut microbiota taxa (derived from shot

The second digital divide mediates the association between parental rearing style and depression, anxiety and their comorbidity among college students: a latent profile and mediation analysis.

BACKGROUND: Depression and anxiety symptoms among college students have become major public health concerns worldwide, including in China. In the context of increasing digitalization, college students are deeply engaged with online and mobile technologies, which may also exacerbate digital inequalities. The second digital divide, conceptualized in this study as disparities in internet literacy and internet attitudes after basic access to digital technologies has been achieved, has emerged as an important form of digital inequality among college students. Its potential triggers and underlying m

Associations Between Social Media-Based Digital Contact with Family and Friends on Loneliness and Well-being Outcomes in Middle-aged and Older Adults: A Mediation Analysis.

Social connections are essential for well-being, particularly in middle-aged and older adults, but maintaining them becomes challenging due to shrinking social networks and physical limitations that hinder participation in social events. Social media offers a potential avenue for increasing social interaction and online social support, thereby reducing loneliness and enhancing well-being. Links among social media, loneliness, and well-being remain unclear due in part to age-related differences in how social media is used and perceived. This study utilized data from MIDUS wave 3 and MIDUS refre

Associations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons mixtures with cardiovascular diseases mortality and all-cause mortality and the mediation role of phenotypic ageing: A time-to-event analysis.

The associations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) with cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) and all-cause mortality are unclear, especially the joint effects of PAHs exposure. Meanwhile, no studies have examined the effect of phenotypic ageing on the relationship between PAHs and mortality. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the independent and joint associations between PAHs and CVDs, all-cause mortality, and assess whether phenotypic age acceleration (PhenoAgeAccel) mediate this relationship. We retrospectively collected data of 11,983 adults from the National Health and Nutritio

The protective effects of social support and family functioning on parenting stress among Hispanic/Latino/a American immigrant parents with traumatic life experiences: A mediation analysis.

Despite high rates of traumatic experiences reported among Hispanic/Latino/a immigrants in the U.S., the effect of post-traumatic stress on parenting stress among Hispanic/Latino/a immigrant parents with young children has been overlooked. The present study tested the direct and indirect relationships of self-reported maternal post-traumatic stress symptoms on parenting stress, and the mediating role of protective factors among Hispanic/Latino/a mothers with young children. Baseline data collected from mothers participating in a community-based child-parent dyadic intervention were analyzed. M
