From Synapsia to Ideas: Nitric Oxide and Sensory Roots of Knowledge.

The famous Czech writer Milan Kundera in his essay The Abused Heritage of Cervantes wrote: The boom of sciences drove a man into the tunnel … ty involved in synaptic plasticity and memory. Inhibition of nNOS after learning disrupts long-term memory consolidation, indicating its key role in transforming labile memory traces into more permanent ones [2,3]. On the Role of the Inferior Intraparietal Sulcus in Visual Working Memory for Lateralized Single-feature Objects.

A consolidated practice in cognitive neuroscience is to explore the properties of human visual working memory through the analysis of electromagnetic signals using cued change detection tasks. Under these conditions, EEG/MEG activity increments in the posterior parietal cortex scaling with the number of memoranda are often reported in the hemisphere contralateral to the objects' position in the memory array. This highly replicable finding clashes with several reported failures to observe compatible hemodynamic activity modulations using fMRI or fNIRS in comparable tasks. Here, we reconcile thi

Frontal association cortex is engaged in stimulus integration during associative learning.

The frontal association cortex (FrA) is implicated in higher brain function. Aberrant FrA activity is likely to be involved in dementia pathology. However, the functional circuits both within the FrA and with other regions are unclear. A recent study showed that inactivation of the FrA impairs memory consolidation of an auditory fear conditioning in young mice. In addition, dendritic spine remodeling of FrA neurons is sensitive to paired sensory stimuli that produce associative memory. These findings suggest that the FrA is engaged in neural processes critical to associative learning. Here we …

Anxiolytic and Memory Protective Effects of Withanolide D Isolated From Acnistus arborescens in Adult Zebrafish.

This study evaluated the anxiolytic and memory-protective effects of withanolide D in adult zebrafish (Danio rerio). The compound was admini … hanol-induced memory impairment in the inhibitory avoidance task, suggesting a protective effect on memory consolidation. Molecular docking analyses revealed favorable interactions of withanolide D at the extracellular α1γ2 interface of the GABAA receptor, supporting a putative allosteric interaction in a functionally related modulatory region rather than definitive o …

The effect of citalopram treatment on memory performance, mood state, catalase, BDNF, and MDA in REM sleep-deprived rats.

Rapid-eye movement (REM) sleep is a critical stage of sleep that plays a pivotal role in memory formation, consolidation, and mood regulation. While REM sleep deprivation (REM SD) has been shown to impair cognitive and affective functions, findings across studies remain inconsistent. REM SD may also influence the expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a key protein involved in memory and mood-related processes. In this study, we investigated the effects of REM SD (6 h/day for 7 days) on behavioral and cognitive performance, BDNF levels in the prefrontal cortex, and serum marke

Kindling-induced learning deficiency and possible cellular and molecular involved mechanisms.

Hippocampus learning disturbance is a major symptom of patients with seizure, hence hippocampal dysfunction has essential role in worsening the disease. Hippocampal formation includes neurons and myelinated fibers that are necessary for acquisition and consolidation of memory, long-term potentiation and learning activity. The exact mechanism by which seizure can decrease memory and learning activity of hippocampus remains unknown. In the present study, electrical kindling-induced learning deficit in rats was evaluated by Morris water maze (MWM) test. The hippocampus was removed and changes in

Rapid Sequential Implication of the Human Medial Temporal Lobe in Memory Encoding and Recognition.

The medial temporal lobe (MTL) is crucial for memory encoding and recognition. The time course of these processes is unknown. The present study juxtaposed encoding and recognition in a single paradigm. Twenty healthy subjects performed a continuous recognition task as brain activity was monitored with a high-density electroencephalography. The task presented New pictures thought to evoke encoding. The stimuli were then repeated up to 4 consecutive times to produce over-familiarity. These repeated stimuli served as "baseline" for comparison with the other stimuli. Glycogen synthase kinase-3 signaling in cellular and behavioral responses to psychostimulant drugs.

Glycogen synthase kinase-3 (GSK-3) is a serine/threonine kinase implicated in numerous physiological processes and cellular functions through its ability to regulate the function of many proteins, including transcription factors and structural proteins. GSK-3β has been demonstrated to function as a regulator of multiple behavioral processes induced by drugs of abuse, particularly psychostimulant drugs. In this review, we provide an overview of the regulation of GSK-3β activity produced by psychostimulants, and the role of GSK-3β signaling in psychostimulant-induced behaviors including drug rew

Interaction of cortex and hippocampus in a model of amnesia and semantic dementia.

We describe a systems-level computational model, called TraceLink, that can explain the major characteristics of the neuropsychology of amnesia and of semantic dementia, a recently discovered syndrome in which there is a progressive loss of semantic memory. It also approximates the normal forgetting curve and presents an explanation of why spaced learning is more efficient than massed learning. A central assumption is that consolidation of memory takes place, probably during dream sleep. The model consists of three systems: trace system (certain parts of the neocortex), link system (includes t

Initial exposure to addictive drugs activates polysialylated NCAM-mediated hippocampal memory-associated synaptic plasticity in the rat prior to the emergence of dependence behaviour.

The early neural adaptations to addictive substances are crucial to understanding how drug-associated memories form and contribute to later … l that addictive drugs acutely induce hippocampal neuroplasticity in a manner that parallels normal memory consolidation, including increased NCAM PSA expression and synaptic reorganisation. Following sufficient daily drug exposure, the memory-associated neuroplastic response is lost. Specifically in a setting of drug self-administration, we show that heroin continues …

Remote semantic memory in patients with Korsakoff's syndrome and herpes encephalitis.

Performance of patients with Korsakoff's syndrome and herpes encephalitis was compared on a retrograde amnesia (RA) test, asking subjects to recall and recognize the definitions of words that had come into the language at different time periods. Performance was also compared on a related test in which participants were asked to produce the words to definitions they were given in free recall and cued recall versions. It was hypothesized that, if the temporal gradient in remote memory results from a shift of information from episodic to semantic memory, then there should be a temporal gradient o

Transcranial direct current stimulation for learning and memory in Parkinson's disease: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive impairment affecting memory and learning processes is a common non-motor feature of Parkinson's disease (PD) and contributes substantially to functional decline and a reduced quality of life. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) has emerged as a potentially beneficial non-invasive neuromodulation technique capable of modulating cortical plasticity and enhancing cognitive and motor performance. However, its specific effects on memory- and learning-related outcomes in PD remain unclear. OBJECTIVE: To systematically review and synthesize the available evidence reg

The Relationship Between Default Mode and Dorsal Attention Networks Is Associated With Depressive Disorder Diagnosis and the Strength of Memory Representations Acquired Prior to the Resting State Scan.

Previous research indicates that individuals with depressive disorders (DD) have aberrant resting state functional connectivity and may experience memory dysfunction. While resting state functional connectivity may be affected by experiences preceding the resting state scan, little is known about this relationship in individuals with DD. Our study examined this question in the context of object memory. 52 individuals with DD and 45 healthy controls (HC) completed clinical interviews, and a memory encoding task followed by a forced-choice recognition test. A 5-min resting state fMRI scan was ad

Impaired learning and memory and altered hippocampal neurodevelopment resulting from interleukin-2 gene deletion.

Interleukin-2 (IL-2), the protypical T cell growth factor and immunoregulatory cytokine produced by lymphocytes, has been implicated as a brain neurotrophic factor and neuromodulator. The consequences of the absence of endogenous IL-2 on brain development and function were unknown. Brain IL-2 receptors are enriched in the hippocampal formation, an area critical for the acquisition and consolidation of spatial learning and memory. Thus, we tested the hypothesis that mice lacking IL-2 would exhibit alterations in hippocampal-dependent learning and neurodevelopment. Compared with C57BL/6-IL-2+/+

The loss of episodic memories in retrograde amnesia: single-case and group studies.

Retrograde amnesia in neurological disorders is a perplexing and fascinating research topic. The severity of retrograde amnesia is not well correlated with that of anterograde amnesia, and there can be disproportionate impairments of either. Within retrograde amnesia, there are various dissociations which have been claimed-for example, between the more autobiographical (episodic) and more semantic components of memory. However, the associations of different types of retrograde amnesia are also important, and clarification of these issues is confounded by the fact that retrograde amnesia seems
