[Lymphomatosis cerebri as the cause of leukoencephalopathy].

INTRODUCTION: Lymphomatosis cerebri (LC) is an infrequent type of primary lymphoma of the central nervous system that is characterised by di … f the head revealed extensive, diffuse and bilateral involvement of the white matter, basal nuclei, mesencephalon and pons, with no mass effect or contrast enhancement. A stereotactic biopsy of the white matter (which was not conclusive) showed a perivascular mixed mononuclear-cell inflammatory infiltrate of B and T cells. No cytologic atypia was observed. Trea …

Widespread disruption in brain activation patterns to a working memory task during cocaine abstinence.

Cocaine abstinence is associated with impaired performance in cognitive functions including attention, vigilance and executive function. Here we test the hypothesis that cognitive dysfunction during cocaine abstinence reflects in part impairment of cortical and subcortical regions modulated by dopamine. We used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to study brain activation to a verbal working memory task in cocaine abusers (n=16) and healthy controls (n=16). Compared to controls, cocaine abusers showed: (1) hypoactivation in the mesencephalon, where dopamine neurons are located, as wel…

Lesions in the central nervous system associated with perinatal lamb mortality.

OBJECTIVE: To identify and describe the occurrence of neurological lesions that could have an effect on lamb mortality. PROCEDURE: The central nervous system was investigated macroscopically (n = 92) and microscopically (n = 72) in lambs dying in the perinatal period during 3 years in flocks of adult Corriedale ewes. The central nervous system was removed intact and samples of cerebral cortex, basal ganglia, thalamus, hippocampus, mesencephalon, cerebellar cortex, medulla oblongata, and cervical spinal cord were scored microscopically for the severity of neuronal dead, cytotoxic and perivascu…

[Merosin-positive congenital muscular dystrophy, white matter abnormalities, and bilateral posterior occipital cortical dysplasia].

Congenital muscular dystrophy (CMD) is one of the most frequent dystrophies of childhood, which is commonly characterized by neonatal muscle … mispheres, affecting corpos calosum, posterior arms of internal capsules and the piramidal tract to mesencephalon. It also disclosed diffuse and symetrical high signal of basal ganglia, specially, the head of caudate nuclei. These were associated with bilateral occipital posterior cortical dysplasia. Localization of nAChR subunit mRNAs in the brain of Macaca mulatta.

We present here a systematic mapping of nAChR subunit mRNAs in Macaca mulatta brain. A fragment, from the transmembrane segments MIII to MIV of Macaca neuronal nAChR subunits was cloned, and shown to exhibit high identity (around 95%) to the corresponding human subunits. Then, specific oligodeoxynucleotides were synthesized for in situ hybridization experiments. Both alpha4 and beta2 mRNA signals were widely distributed in the brain, being stronger in the thalamus and in the dopaminergic cells of the mesencephalon. Most brain nuclei displayed both alpha4 and beta2 signals with the exception of…

Neurturin exerts potent actions on survival and function of midbrain dopaminergic neurons.

Glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) exhibits potent effects on survival and function of midbrain dopaminergic (DA) neurons in … of the receptor components GDNF Family Receptor alpha1 (GFRalpha1) and GFRalpha2 within the ventral mesencephalon. These results suggest that NTN is an endogenous trophic factor for midbrain DA neurons and point to the possibility that GDNF and NTN may exert redundant trophic influences on nigral DA neurons acting via a receptor complex that includes GFRalpha1.

Lateral Supracerebellar Infratentorial Approach for Resection of a Tegmental Midbrain Cavernous Malformation: 2-Dimensional Operative Video.

Brainstem cavernous malformations present a surgical challenge because of their deep location and proximity to critical structures. However, for lesions with recurrent hemorrhage, the risks of surgery may be lower than observation. Brainstem safe entry zones are well-established corridors through which intrinsic brainstem lesions such as cavernous malformations can be resected,1 even when they do not present to the pial surface. The safe entry zone in the lateral mesencephalic sulcus is an established route to lesions of the lateral peduncle and tegmentum.1 Here we present a case of a 43-year-

Deep brain stimulation of the mesencephalic locomotor region or lateral hypothalamus for facilitation of walking after spinal cord injury.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Spinal cord injury (SCI) causes profound gait impairment and autonomic dysfunction. Deep brain stimulation (DBS) of supraspinal locomotor centers may strengthen spared descending motor and autonomic pathways to improve walking. Preclinical and clinical studies have targeted the cuneiform nucleus (CnF) and pedunculopontine nucleus (PPN) of the mesencephalic locomotor region (MLR) and the lateral hypothalamus. To summarize recent progress in DBS as a strategy to facilitate locomotion with a particular focus on SCI. RECENT FINDINGS: DBS of the CnF, PPN, and lateral hypothalamu

Bilateral adduction palsy with a paramedian midbrain lesion is most likely wall-eyed bilateral oculomotor subnuclear ophthalmoplegia: a case report of a brainstem infarction.

A 73-year-old female was hospitalized in our Department of Neurology for diplopia due to multiple infarctions in the midbrain and pons. A neurological examination revealed bilateral adduction palsy during horizontal gaze with nystagmus of the contralateral abducting eye. Exotropia and impaired convergence were also noticed. The distinctive symptoms indicated wall-eyed bilateral internuclear ophthalmoplegia (WEBINO). We speculate that the cause of WEBINO in our case was bilateral medial rectus palsy via bilateral damage to the medial rectus subnuclei (MRSN) due to the paramedian midbrain infarc
