Blood hypomethylation of inflammatory genes mediates the effects of metal-rich airborne pollutants on blood coagulation.

OBJECTIVES: Recent investigations have associated airborne particulate matter (PM) with increased coagulation and thrombosis, but underlying biological mechanisms are still incompletely characterised. DNA methylation is an environmentally sensitive mechanism of gene regulation that could potentially contribute to PM-induced hypercoagulability. We aimed to test whether altered methylation mediates environmental effects on coagulation. METHODS: We investigated 63 steel workers exposed to a wide range of PM levels, as a work-related condition with well-characterised prothrombotic exposure. We me

Pneumoconiosis and malignant mesothelioma in a family operated metal casting business that used industrial talc from New York state.

BACKGROUND: The United States is second only to the People's Republic of China in annual talc production. U.S. talc is used in the production of ceramics, paint, paper, plastics, roofing, rubber, cosmetics, flooring, caulking, and agricultural applications. A number of U.S. talc deposits consistently contain talc intergrown with amphiboles such as tremolite and/or anthophyllite. It has long been recognized that miners and millers of talc deposits are at risk for pneumoconiosis and it has recently been reported that it is prudent, on the balance of probabilities, to conclude that dusts from New

Lead chromate pigments dominate lead paints sold in Mexico.

Testing the lead content of new paints is important to inform governments of the potential hazard in countries that have yet to ban or regulate the lead content of these products. This study included a sample of paints for automotive, metal primer, architectural enamel, and road-marking applications in Mexico. Samples from 213 paint products manufactured by 54 domestic and 5 foreign paint companies were purchased from retail outlets and tested at an accredited laboratory in the United States for lead content. Samples were selected to be representative of the available brands of red and yellow

Pneumatic Nail Gun Injury to the Cardiac Box: A Case Report of Successful Extraction of a Potentially Dangerous Tool.

Pneumatic nail guns are widely used in industrial and domestic settings and can cause injuries that may appear minor externally but can be potentially life-threatening. While most injuries involve the extremities, penetrations within the cardiac box carry a significant risk of myocardial or great vessel injury and may present with deceptive clinical stability. A 39-year-old male furniture worker presented to the emergency department after an accidental chest injury with a pneumatic nail gun. Despite a potentially hazardous trajectory through the corpus sterni toward the pericardium, the patien

[Pronator teres syndrome in association with compressive neuropathies on the upper limb. Serial cases and bibliographic review].

INTRODUCTION: Pronator teres syndrome (PTS) consists of compression of the median nerve between the heads of the pronator teres muscle. It is a rare pathology that is often confused with other compressive neuropathies on the upper extremity. We present three uncommon cases of PTS associated with nerve compressions on elbow and wrist. CASE 1: A 53-year-old male musician presented with paresthesias on the right upper limb. Electrophysiology showed entrapment of the median nerve in the wrist and the ulnar nerve in the elbow. Ultrasonography showed compression of the median nerve between the prona

European Code against Cancer 4th Edition: Environment, occupation and cancer.

People are exposed throughout life to a wide range of environmental and occupational pollutants from different sources at home, in the workplace or in the general environment - exposures that normally cannot be directly controlled by the individual. Several chemicals, metals, dusts, fibres, and occupations have been established to be causally associated with an increased risk of specific cancers, such as cancers of the lung, skin and urinary bladder, and mesothelioma. Significant amounts of air pollutants - mainly from road transport and industry - continue to be emitted in the European Union

High doses of cobalt induce optic and auditory neuropathy.

The adverse biological effects of continuous exposure to cobalt and chromium have been well defined. In the past, this toxicity was largely an industrial issue concerning workers exposed in occupational setting. Nevertheless, recent reports have described a specific toxicity mediated by the high levels of cobalt and chromium released by metallic prostheses, particularly in patients who had received hip implants. Clinical symptoms, including blindness, deafness and peripheral neuropathy, suggest a specific neurotropism. However, little is known about the neuropathological basis of this process,

Urinary mercury and biomarkers of early renal dysfunction in environmentally and occupationally exposed adults: a three-country study.

We conducted a cross-sectional study in Sweden, Italy and Poland to assess environmental and occupational exposure to mercury from chloralkali (CA) plants and the potential association with biomarkers of early renal dysfunction. Questionnaire data and first-morning urine samples were collected from 757 eligible subjects. Urine samples were analysed for mercury corrected for creatinine (U-HgC), alpha-1-microglobulin (A1M), N-acetyl-beta-glucosaminidase (NAG) and albumin. Determinants of urinary mercury excretion were examined. Levels of kidney markers were compared in three U-HgC categories, an

Interaction of metal salts with cytoskeletal motor protein systems.

Interactions of chemicals with the microtubular network of cells may lead to genotoxicity. Micronuclei (MN) might be caused by interaction of metals with tubulin and/or kinesin. The genotoxic effects of inorganic lead and mercury salts were studied using the MN assay and the CREST analysis in V79 Chinese hamster fibroblasts. Effects on the functional activity of motor protein systems were examined by measurement of tubulin assembly and kinesin-driven motility. Lead and mercury salts induced MN dose-dependently. The no-effect-concentration for MN induction was 1.1 microM PbCl(2), 0.05 microM Pb

Dust-induced interstitial lung disease in the tropics.

Inhalation of dusts is an important cause of interstitial lung disease in the tropical countries such as India. While dusts of organic origin, such as the cotton dust causing byssinosis, generally cause bronchial or bronchiolar involvement and hypersensitivity pneumonitis, inorganic metallic dusts cause progressive pulmonary fibrosis. Silicosis, coal workers' pneumoconiosis, and asbestosis are the three most commonly recognized forms of pneumoconiotic pulmonary fibrosis. Pulmonary tuberculosis is an important complication seen in up to 50% of patients of silicosis in some reports from India. T

Toxicity and occupational health hazards of coal fly ash (CFA). A review of data and comparison to coal mine dust.

Coal fly ashes (CFA) are complex particles of a variable composition, which is mainly dependent on the combustion process, the source of coal and the precipitation technique. Toxic constituents in these particles are considered to be metals, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and silica. The purpose of this review was to study the in vitro and in vivo data on coal fly ash and relate the studied endpoints to the role of (crystalline) silica, considering its recent classification as a human carcinogen. For most of the effects coal mine dust was chosen as a reference, since it contains up to 10% of

An analysis of chemicals and other constituents found in produced water from hydraulically fractured wells in California and the challenges for wastewater management.

As high-volume hydraulic fracturing (HF) has grown substantially in the United States over the past decade, so has the volume of produced water (PW), i.e., briny water brought to the surface as a byproduct of oil and gas production. According to a recent study (Groundwater Protection Council, 2015), more than 21 billion barrels of PW were generated in 2012. In addition to being high in TDS, PW may contain hydrocarbons, PAH, alkylphenols, naturally occurring radioactive material (NORM), metals, and other organic and inorganic substances. PW from hydraulically fractured wells includes flowback w

Hexavalent chromium and isocyanate exposures during military aircraft painting under crossflow ventilation.

Exposure control systems performance was investigated in an aircraft painting hangar. The ability of the ventilation system and respiratory protection program to limit worker exposures was examined through air sampling during painting of F/A-18C/D strike fighter aircraft, in four field surveys. Air velocities were measured across the supply filter, exhaust filter, and hangar midplane under crossflow ventilation. Air sampling conducted during painting process phases (wipe-down, primer spraying, and topcoat spraying) encompassed volatile organic compounds, total particulate matter, Cr[VI], metal

[Incidence of malignant mesothelioma (1980-1999) and asbestos exposure in 190 cases diagnosed among residents of the province of Brescia].

Several cases of malignant mesothelioma (MM) previously unknown to the Occupational Health and Safety Service were recognised in the Province of Brescia after an active surveillance program carried out during the first nineteen years of operation; a large proportion of the cases involved workers occupationally exposed to asbestos. A local Mesothelioma Register was subsequently set up in 1993 and by the end of 1999, 190 MM cases had been collected. The annual incidence ratio (standardized on the Italian population, census 1981, x100,000 person-years) was calculated in the 1980-1999 period and s
