Selective electro-oxidation of methane to methanol at room temperature using a flow reactor.

Converting methane to value-added chemicals is desirable for sustainable chemical production. Here, an α-Fe2O3 catalyst sprayed onto a graphite felt electrode was used as an electrocatalyst in a flow-cell reactor for methane conversion at room temperature. A methane conversion of 37% was achieved, with high selectivity toward methanol and a production rate of 873 µmol g-1 h-1, corresponding to a faradaic efficiency (FE) of 40.3% when water was used as the oxygen source. Upon the addition of 3% potassium chloride, the methanol yield increased to 1,248 µmol g-1 h-1 with a faradaic efficiency of …

Enhancing 3-hydroxypropionic acid production in Komagataella phaffii via methanol and formate co-feeding.

Komagataella phaffii is a promising cell factory that can use CO2 derived methanol, a sustainable carbon (C1) source, for chemical production. Introducing the ß-alanine biosynthetic pathway alongside a NADP+-dependent formate dehydrogenase (FDH) in K. phaffii enables the production of the platform chemical 3-hydroxypropionic acid (3-HP). Co-feeding of formate and methanol (MeOH) was systematically explored to enhance cellular reducing power and improve 3-HP biosynthesis. Implementing a pulsed formate strategy alongside MeOH resulted in up to a 20.7% increase in 3-HP per gram of MeOH (Yg3-HP gM…

Enhanced output of Fe2+/Fe3+ liquid energy conversion using a methanol-acetone mixed solvent.

Energy-harvesting technologies that scavenge energy from ambient environments have attracted growing research interest to facilitate progres … ted the dependence of α, R cell, and W max on the solvent mixing ratio in Fe2+/Fe3+ solutions using methanol (MeOH)-acetone mixed solvents. We found that α was maintained at a high value (about 2.9 mV K-1) at a methanol molar ratio (x MeOH) = 0.2, while R cell was lower than that in either the MeOH solution or the acetone solution. As a result, W max incre …

Techno-Economic Analysis of Biogas-to-Methanol via Integrated Oxy-Combustion and Electrolytic Routes.

This study presents a techno-economic analysis of two biogas-to-methanol process designs via integrated oxy-fuel combined heat and power and either Solid Oxide Electrolysis Cells (SOEC) or Alkaline Water Electrolysis (AWE). Both routes are modeled for an inlet biogas flow of 2000 Nm3/h (60%mol CH4, 40%mol CO2 composition). Results reveal that the AWE route achieves a superior carbon conversion efficiency (88.8%), resulting in a higher annual production of chemical-grade methanol (19.7 kt/year) compared to the SOEC counterpart, this exhibiting a carbon efficiency of 76.6% and an annual methanol…

Cu+-Cu0 Cluster Pairs in Defective MOFs for Highly Synergistic CO2 Hydrogenation to Methanol.

Precise arrangement of multivalent Cu sites for the synchronized activation of CO2 and H2 in selective methanol synthesis remained challenging. Herein, we designed spatially arrayed Cu+-Cu0 cluster pairs confined within UiO-66 (U66) to achieve spatiotemporally directed CO2 hydrogenation to methanol. This architecture was constructed by creating missing-linker defects within U66 using L-ascorbic acid (LA), followed by sequential anchoring of high-density, adjacent Cu+-Cu0 cluster pairs (≈1:1 ratio) to yield a Cu/U66(LA-Cu) catalyst. Under reaction conditions of 220°C and 3 MPa, this catalyst ac…

Effects of organic acids on purple potato wine brewing: methanol, higher alcohols and flavor.

Methanol and higher alcohols pose health risk in many alcoholic beverages. In this study, the effects of adding organic acids on the fermentation and methanol and higher alcohol levels in purple potato wine were investigated. To explore the mechanisms underlying the effects of organic acids, a transcriptome analysis and enzyme activity assays were performed. The addition of acetic, lactic, and citric acids increased the types and contents of volatile substances such as esters and acids, and improved the taste and flavor of wine. All three organic acids effectively reduced methanol and higher a…

Mechanism-informed graph-assisted screening of PtM local motifs for CO-tolerant methanol oxidation.

Efficient methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) catalysts require weakened CO binding at Pt and favorable formation of oxygenated species at adjacent metal sites. The many top-layer and subsurface arrangements of PtM alloys, however, create a local-motif space that is costly to enumerate with density functional theory (DFT). We develop a mechanism-informed, graph-assisted active-learning framework for adsorption-descriptor-based prioritization of CO-tolerance-relevant PtM motifs. A curated DFT dataset contains CO@Pt, OH@Pt, and OH@M adsorption energies. Interpretable element-motif descriptors reve…

Molecular-Ionic Hybrid Modulates Intermediate Evolution from CO2 to Methanol at High Current Density.

Electrochemical conversion of CO2 to methanol offers compelling route for sustainable carbon utilization. Although cobalt phthalocyanine (CoPc) is recognized as promising catalyst for this reaction, achieving high methanol selectivity at high current density remains a critical challenge, due to insufficient stabilization of *CO intermediate and sluggish hydrogenation kinetics. Here we report a molecular-ionic hybrid catalyst constructed by integrating amino-functionalized CoPc with imidazolium-based ionic liquid (IL) on carbon nanotubes (CoPc-NH2 + IL/CNT). The hybrid catalyst achieves a metha…

Cu-Sb Atomic Pair Site in Metal Halide Perovskite for CO2 Reduction to Methanol.

Electrochemical conversion of CO2 into methanol has received extensive attention in recent years since methanol is an efficient energy carrier and industrial feedstock. However, the selectivity to methanol remains unsatisfied. In this work, Sb-doped Cs3Cu2I5 is first and rationally developed for CO2 electrochemical reduction, achieving remarkable high selectivity of methanol. UV-vis absorption, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that the Sb dopants narrow the band gap of Cs3Cu2I5 and enhance the metal-ligand hybridization due to the in…

Insights into the methanol utilization capacity of Y. lipolytica and improvements through metabolic engineering.

Methanol is a promising sustainable alternative feedstock for green biomanufacturing. The yeast Yarrowia lipolytica offers a versatile platform for producing a wide range of products but it cannot use methanol efficiently. In this study, we engineered Y. lipolytica to utilize methanol by overexpressing a methanol dehydrogenase, followed by the incorporation of methanol assimilation pathways from methylotrophic yeasts and bacteria. We also overexpressed the ribulose monophosphate (RuMP) and xylulose monophosphate (XuMP) pathways, which led to significant improvements in growth with methanol, re…

Insight into Ni active site coordination in nickel-manganese spinels for methanol electrooxidation catalysis.

As non-precious catalysts, Ni-based catalysts play a significant role in methanol oxidation for energy conversion technologies. At the same time, the effect of the complicated chemical environment on catalytic efficiency remains unclear. Here, the coordination environment of Ni active sites in spinel nickel-manganese (NiMn2O4 and MnNi2O4) is investigated as a platform to elucidate the correlation with catalytic performance in methanol electro-oxidation. The occupation of Ni2+ ions in these structures modulates the intrinsic activity of Ni active sites in NiMn spinels, resulting in different ca…
