Direct measurement of volumetric flow rate in the cardiovascular system with ultrasound is valuable but has been a challenge because most current 2-D flow imaging techniques are only able to estimate the flow velocity in the scanning plane (in-plane). Our recent study demonstrated that high frame rate contrast ultrasound and speckle decorrelation (SDC) can be used to accurately measure the speed of flow going through the scanning plane (through-plane). The volumetric flow could then be calculated by integrating over the luminal area, when the blood vessel was scanned from the transverse view.

Vascular perfusion was assessed in 10 dogs without prostatic abnormalities and 26 dogs with prostatic disease using contrast-enhanced ultrasound. The time to reach peak contrast intensity (TTP) and peak perfusion intensity (PPI) were measured, and histological biopsies were collected from each dog. Biopsies confirmed normal prostate (n = 10), benign prostatic hyperplasia (n = 11), mixed benign pathology (n = 9), prostatitis (n = 1), prostatic malignancy [adenocarcinoma (n = 4); leiomyosarcoma (n = 1)]. OBJECTIVE: Transcutaneous ultrasound enables visualization of pleural-based lesions but with a poor correlation to specific pathology. Ultrasound contrast agents in conjunction with contrast-specific imaging techniques are increasingly accepted in clinical use. Based on the dual arterial supply of the lung, this organ is suited for evaluation of arterial vascularity by contrast-enhanced sonography (CES). The goal of the study described here was to assess the feasibility, advantages, diagnostic sensitivity and accuracy of contrast transthoracic echocardiography examination (cTTE) using 50% glucose as a contrast agent in comparison with the use of agitated saline as contrast to screen for PFO. Fibrosis mediated by transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta) is a common cause of peritoneal dialysis (PD) failure. In a model of peritoneal fibrosis, we tested the effect of Smad7, an inhibitor of TGF-beta signaling, using an ultrasound-microbubble-mediated delivery system. Rats were given daily PD for 4 weeks and received Smad7 or control plasmid transfer.
