The basement lamina of the epithelium of the true vocal cords of 34 inpatients suffering from chronic laryngitis, Reinke's oedema and squamous cell carcinoma have been investigated with the electron and immunofluorescence microscope. In chronic laryngitis, the lamina fibroreticularis is thickened (due to collagen type VII), corresponding to the clinical finding. In this layer mobile cells of the connective tissue can be found. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether the epithelium of an endometriotic lesion has eutopic endometrial glandular epithelium morphology or not for the histogenesis of endometriosis.
METHOD: Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of the endometrium was done for 25 cases. Histologically proven endometriotic lesions of 10 of these 25 cases were processed for SEM. Peroneum samples of another 15 cases without histological endometriosis were also studied.

An outbreak of acute gastroenteritis affected approximately half of 40 children staying at a holiday centre in Southern Norway. By direct electron microscopy Norwalk-like viruses were demonstrated in 4/8 available stool specimens. No other pathogens were detected. The replication of active and inactivated influenza viruses in Daudi lymphoma cells was studied by immunofluorescence and electron microscopy. In a previous study, we demonstrated that active and heat-inactivated X47 (H3N2) virus arrested Daudi cell growth by inhibiting cellular DNA synthesis while formalin-treated X47 virus did not. Emphysema was produced in hamsters by a single intratracheal injection of 25 units of porcine pancreatic elastase. The lungs were examined by scanning electron microscopy at intervals from 24 hours to 1 year after the injection, and the appearance was compared to examples of human emphysema. A case of malignant chondroid syringoma occurring in a 52-year-old female is reported. The tumour presented as a large, cystic lesion of the thigh. Local recurrence and secondary deposits in the inguinal region occurred at an early stage. The rarity of these malignant tumours and metastasising sweat gland tumours in general is emphasised.

BACKGROUND: Pediatric native kidney diseases are common worldwide. The pathological diagnosis of kidney lesions is crucial for clinical treatment and prognosis. The aim of the current study was therefore to evaluate the value of electron microscopy (EM) to the final diagnosis of native kidney biopsies in children.
