Radiography or computed tomography is the most widely available imaging tool for foreign body detection. However, the detectability of low-density substances by x ray is very poor when located in soft tissues. Various dielectric loss factors of foreign bodies contribute great microwave absorption heterogeneity compared with the surrounding tissue. Between February 2003 and January 2004 a microwave-modified Maze III procedure was performed as an associated procedure in nine patients in chronic atrial fibrillation undergoing surgery for heart valve disease. Tin(IV) oxide thin films have been prepared by dip-coating. The suspensions used for these depositions have been synthesized by microwave-induced thermohydrolysis of tin tetrachloride aqueous solutions in the presence of hydrochloric acid. Single or multiple depositions were tested, on glass substrates as well as on pure SiO2. The obtained thin films were characterized by optical microscopy, interferometric roughness measurements (Micromap), scanning electron microscopy, secondary ion mass spectroscopy, and scanning tunneling microscopy.

A 32-year-old man with a 1.7-cm tumor in the left kidney underwent laparoscopy-assisted partial nephrectomy. Although his postoperative course was uneventful, a 6-month postoperative CT scan showed hydronephrosis secondary to a severe stricture at the ureteropelvic junction. Heat injury to the urinary tract was strongly suspected. The use of microwave tissue coagulator for the tumor close to the renal sinus and excessive coagulation should be avoided to prevent heat-related complications.

The majority of intracellular ions was "invisible" by classical conductance measurements over the regions of audio and radio frequencies. In the microwave region all the cations become "visible" in muscles. A non-invasive method is found to determine the cationic content of biological tissues. The better the physical condition of the muscle the greater the new parameter, the invisible cationic conductivity. 15% of the total cation content is released by thermal treatment that was probably associated with negative phosphate or carboxylate groups of the lipoid surface of the membrane structure.
