Acinetobacter baumannii (A. baumannii) is an opportunistic pathogen associated with nosocomial infections. Cronobacter sakazakii neonatal infections are often epidemiologically linked to the consumption of contaminated powdered infant formula. We describe a case resulting from consumption of contaminated expressed breast milk, as confirmed by whole-genome sequencing. This case highlights potential risks associated with storage and acquisition of expressed breast milk.

The frequency of milk-alkali syndrome decreased rapidly after the development of histamine-2 antagonists and proton pump inhibitors for the treatment of peptic ulcer disease; however, the availability and overconsumption of antacids and calcium supplements can still place patients at risk (D. P. Beall et al., 2006). Here we describe a patient who presented with altered mental status, hypercalcemia, metabolic alkalosis, and acute renal failure in the context of ingesting large amounts of antacids to control dyspepsia.

Selective ewe's or goat's milk allergy without cow's milk allergy often presents as a severe picture. Diagnosis and follow-up are facilitated by the use of laboratory tests. Serum tryptase is elevated after mast cell degranulation. Combined determination of serum tryptase and immunoglobulin-E levels are particularly useful in the work-up of anaphylaxis, should it have been fatal. A case of ewe's milk allergy without cow's milk allergy and its laboratory work-up are reported.
