Both vitamin D and vitamin K are essential nutrients for bone health. It is believed that vitamin D deficiency is responsible for rickets in infants and osteomalacia in adults, and chronic vitamin D insufficiency induces hyperparathyroidism and reduces bone mineral density, resulting in an increased risk of osteoporosis. Vitamin K deficiency is thought to cause impaired activation of bone matrix protein osteocalcin, and reduction of osteoblast function, resulting in impaired bone formation. Recently, we reported that a high prevalence of low vitamin D status (low serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D conc

Renal osteodystrophy is a universal complication of uremia. Renal failure patients are at risk for low bone mineral density (BMD) and fractures. Parathyroid hormone (PTH) plays a pivotal role in the pathophysiology of uremic bone disease. Histomorphometric studies suggest that the maintenance of PTH levels between two and four times the upper limit of normal is associated with the lowest prevalence of two common forms of osteodystrophy: osteitis fibrosa cystica and adynamic bone disease. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether the above recommendation for PTH levels in dialysis pa

BACKGROUND: Reduced bone mass and fragility fractures are known complications after transplantation in adults. Far less is known about the skeletal effects of transplantation in children and adolescents.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study examined the skeletal status of children (ages 9-18 years) who were at least 1 year post-cardiac (n=13), post-renal (n=8), or post-bone marrow (BMT; n=15) transplantation. Bone mass at total hip, femoral neck, spine (L2-4), and whole body (WB) was determined by dual energy x-ray absorptiometry and compared with age, sex, and ethnic-specific reference data.

Health problems of gold miners who worked underground include decreased life expectancy; increased frequency of cancer of the trachea, bronchus, lung, stomach, and liver; increased frequency of pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB), silicosis, and pleural diseases; increased frequency of insect-borne diseases, such as malaria and dengue fever; noise-induced hearing loss; increased prevalence of certain bacterial and viral diseases; and diseases of the blood, skin, and musculoskeletal system. These problems are briefly documented in gold miners from Australia, North America, South America, and Africa. I

Diet is estimated to contribute to about one-third of preventable cancers -- about the same amount as smoking. Inadequate intake of essential vitamins and minerals might explain the epidemiological findings that people who eat only small amounts of fruits and vegetables have an increased risk of developing cancer. Recent experimental evidence indicates that vitamin and mineral deficiencies can lead to DNA damage. Optimizing vitamin and mineral intake by encouraging dietary change, multivitamin and mineral supplements, and fortifying foods might therefore prevent cancer and other chronic diseas…

Familial dysautonomia (FD) patients suffer from multiple fractures and have reduced bone pain, which defers the diagnosis. The pathogenesis of bone fragility in FD is unknown. This study aimed to characterize bone mineral metabolism and density in FD. Seventy-nine FD patients aged 8 months to 48 years (mean age 13.9 +/- 10.4 years, median 12.3) were studied. Clinical data included weight, height, bone age, weekly physical activity and history of fractures. Bone mineral density (BMD) of the lumbar spine (n = 43), femoral neck (n = 26), total hip (n = 22) and whole body (n = 15) were determined

Patients with diabetes tend to have an increased incidence of osteopenia that may be related to hyperglycemia. However, little is known about how glucose may alter bone formation and osteoblast maturation. To determine whether glucose affects osteoblastic calcium deposition, MC3T3-E1 cells were incubated in media containing either a normal (5.5 mmol/L) or high glucose concentration (15 mmol/L) or mannitol (15 mmol/L), and bone nodule formation was examined. Net calcium flux was measured thrice weekly and cumulative calcium uptake was determined. Compared with control incubations, glucose signi

Osteoporosis (OP) is a growing health problem not only in women but also in men. It is well known that men lose bone during aging and are at risk for OP, but the risk factors for OP in men remain controversial. To assess determinants of bone mineral density (BMD) in the spine and femoral neck, 37 healthy men aged 43-73 years were measured using dual photon absorptiometry. Predictors of lumbar spine and femoral neck BMD were determined using multiple linear regression analysis. Backward elimination procedure was used to identify variables significantly related to BMD. The independent variables

A mixed culture with the ability to aerobically biodegrade 1,4-dioxane in the presence of tetrahydrofuran (THF) was enriched from a 1,4-dioxane contaminated aquifer. This consortium contained 3-4 morphologically different types of colonies and was grown in mineral salts media. Biodegradation of 1,4-dioxane began when THF concentrations in batch experiments became relatively low. No biodegradation of 1,4-dioxane was observed in the absence of THF and the measured cell yield was similar during degradation of 1,4-dioxane with THF or with THF alone. However, when the consortium was grown in the pr

OBJECTIVES: Reduced bone mineral density (BMD) has been reported in pre-menopausal women and children with Marfan syndrome (MFS). The bone mineral status of adult men with MFS is unknown. The objective of this study was to determine the BMD of adult men and women with MFS.
METHODS: BMD (g/cm(2)) was measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) of the lumbar spine (L1-L4), femoral neck and total hip in 25 adults (12 male) who fulfilled the 1996 MFS diagnostic criteria. The results were compared with age- and sex-matched controls and expressed as S.D. from the population mean (z score).

BACKGROUND: Mineral trioxide aggregate, or MTA, is a new material developed for endodontics that appears to be a significant improvement over other materials for procedures in bone. It is the first restorative material that consistently allows for the overgrowth of cementum, and it may facilitate the regeneration of the periodontal ligament.
CASE DESCRIPTION: The authors present five cases in which MTA was used to manage clinical problems. These included vertical root fracture, apexification, perforation repair and repair of a resorptive defect. In each case, MTA allowed bone healing and elim

The objective of the study was to elucidate if individuals with Down's syndrome (DS) are likely to experience an increased risk of osteoporosis with advancing age, in addition to precocious aging and their skeletal anomalies. Bone mineral density (BMD) was measured in 22 home-reared adults (9 males and 13 females; age 26.22 +/- 4.45 and 23.65 +/- 3.23 years, respectively) by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). The BMD of the second to fourth lumbar vertebrae was measured in posteroanterior projection and the mean density expressed as grams per square centimetre. The BMD of DS individuals w

Optimization of the simultaneous chemical and biological mineralization of perchloroethylene (PCE) by modified Fenton's reagent and Xanthobacter flavus was investigated by using a central composite rotatable experimental design. Concentrations of PCE, hydrogen peroxide, and ferrous iron and the microbial cell number were set as variables. Percent mineralization of PCE to CO2 was investigated as a response. A second-order, quadratic response surface model was generated and fit the data adequately, with a correlation coefficient of 0.72. Analysis of the results showed that the PCE concentration

In women, many studies indicate that the risk of vertebral fragility fractures increases as bone mineral density (BMD) declines. In contrast, few studies are available for BMD and vertebral fractures in men. It is uncertain that the strength of the relationship between BMD and fractures is similar in magnitude in middle-aged men and in postmenopausal women. In the present study, 200 men (mean age 54.7 years) with lumbar osteopenia (T-score < -1.5) were recruited to examine the relationships between spine BMD and hip BMD and the associations of BMD with vertebral fractures. Lumbar BMD was asses

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: The success rate of implant osseointegration is dependent on many factors such as bone mineral density, volume and vascularity of bone, implant design, ridge shape, and patient selection criteria among others.
PURPOSE: This study examined whether a technique to measure differences in bone mineral density in the maxilla and mandible might be useful to predict the likelihood of successful osseointegration.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Bone densitometry of the jaws was performed with a densitometer, and bone mineral density was calculated at three regions of the maxilla and one s

Frequent complications of Crohn's disease include disorders of bone mineralization. They are due to a reduced dietary calcium supply in patients with lactose intolerance and a certain degree of malabsorption of calcium as well as vitamin D. The position is made worse by corticoids used in treatment of the basic disease, because they interfere not only with vitamin D conversion into its active (and much more effective) metabolites but also with osteoid formation In the early diagnosis of demineralization a densitometer can be used; markers of bone metabolism are used so far less frequently.
