People who are homeless are known to have high rates of morbidity and mortality. Yet their attitudes, values, and desires regarding end-of-life care have not been studied. This article reports on the findings from interviews with groups of homeless individuals in the Twin Cities performed by University of Minnesota researchers. It explores the implications of homelessness on two commonly discussed ethical principles-autonomy and justice.

Age of primiparity (AOP) in American black bears (Ursus americanus) is driven by nutrition. We estimated AOP from patterns of cementum annuli in female bear teeth (more than 16 000), which were collected from hunters in Minnesota, USA, over five decades. AOP was delayed in northern Minnesota and hastened southward, matching the increasing food availability. Clinical impression suggests that many cases of detrusor instability are psychosomatic. Calcium oxalate (39%) and struvite (33%) were the predominant mineral types in canine nephroliths submitted to the Minnesota Urolith Center. Urate salts (12%) and calcium phosphate (2%) occurred less frequently. Provided they are not causing obstruction, struvite nephroliths may be dissolved with medical protocols. Although there are no dissolution protocols for nephroliths containing calcium, risk-benefit ratios should be considered before proceeding with surgery.

This article focuses primarily on REM sleep behavior disorder, a recently identified syndrome with a corresponding animal model. Diagnostic methods and criteria, treatment, and the world literature are reviewed, and the experience of the authors' institution--The Minnesota Regional Sleep Disorders Center (Minneapolis, MN)--is summarized. Other REM parasomnias, including nightmares, REM sleep-related sinus arrest, and sleep-related painful erections, are discussed briefly.
