This review elaborates on multidisciplinary care for persons living with Parkinson disease by using gait and balance impairments as an example of a treatable target that typically necessitates an integrated approach by a range of different and complementary professional disciplines. Using the International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health model as a framework, the authors discuss the assessment and multidisciplinary management of reduced functional mobility due to gait and balance impairments. By doing so, they highlight the complex interplay between motor and nonmotor sym

The Orthopaedic Section of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) has an ongoing effort to create evidence-based practice guidelines for orthopaedic physical therapy management of patients with musculoskeletal impairments described in the World Health Organization's International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health (ICF). The purpose of these revised clinical practice guidelines is to review recent peer-reviewed literature and make recommendations related to meniscus and articular cartilage lesions. Cardiopulmonary exercise testing allows the assessment of the integrative cardiopulmonary response to exercise and is a useful tool to assess the underlying pathophysiologic mechanisms leading to exercise intolerance. Patients with pulmonary hypertension often face a considerable delay in diagnosis due to the rarity of the disease and nonspecific symptoms of dyspnea, fatigue, and exercise limitation. Cardiopulmonary exercise testing may be suggestive of pulmonary hypertension in patients with evidence of both circulatory impairment and ventilatory inefficiency. Other factors, such as mechanica

Improved identification of children with an increased likelihood of death can support appropriate provision of integrated palliative care. This systematic review aims to consider immobility and the associated likelihood of death in children with disabilities, living in high-income countries. Two reviewers independently searched MEDLINE, Embase, Cochrane Library, OpenGrey and Science Citation Index (1990-2016) for studies that reported hazard ratios (HRs) and relative risk for the likelihood of death related to impaired mobility. Nine papers were included. Three studies reported functioning usi

Background Knee braces and foot orthoses are commonly used to improve knee adduction moment, pain and function in subjects with knee osteoarthritis (OA). However, no literature review has been performed to compare the effects of foot orthoses and knee braces in this group of patients. Purpose The aim of this review was to evaluate the effects of foot orthoses and knee braces on knee adduction moment, pain and function in individuals with knee OA. Study design Literature review. Method The search strategy was based on the Population Intervention Comparison Outcome method. A search was performed

The present research attempts to approach a complex concept. The quality of life of multiple sclerosis patients. A literature review was conducted. Based on the finding, it seems that the quality of life for multiple sclerosis patients is influenced by many factors such as self-confidence, which is a direct result of self-ability and mobility, the stage of disease, the social relations as experienced by the patients and the risk of sudden substantial of health deterioration. In addition, telemedicine applications may help either the patients or the health professionals to manage better the pro

Based on a 2013 statistic published by Thai with Disability foundation, five percent of Thailand's population are disabled people. Six hundred thousand of them have mobility disability, and the number is increasing every year. To support them, the Thai government has implemented a number of disability laws and policies. One of the policies is to better disabled people's quality of life by adapting their houses to facilitate their activities. However, the policy has not been fully realized yet-there is still no specific guideline for housing adaptation for people with disabilities. This study i

The aim of the study was to identify the main factors that impact mobility impairment in multiple sclerosis (MS) patients in Italy. Clinicians from a large number of Italian MS centers took part in a Delphi process aimed at obtaining consensus statements among the participants. Large consensus was obtained for statements grouped under the following main MS themes: identification of the most useful scales to evaluate mobility, integration of objective evaluation with patient perceptions, impact of walking impairment on daily life, management of the disabled patient using a rehabilitative and ph

In a recent study, Brière, Nadeau, Lauzière, and Gravel (2013 ) examined the perceptions of individuals post-stroke on their weight-bearing distribution and knee effort distribution in sit-to-stand tasks. The present comment emphasized the importance of the feeling of post-stroke hemiparesis in sit-to-stand task and identified areas of improvements of the target study.

Diversity of neighborhood amenities may promote the mobility of older adults. A 2010 community-based sample of 510 adults aged ≥65 years in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and geospatial data from the Esri Business Analyst database (Esri, Inc., Redlands, California) were used to assess associations of neighborhood amenity diversity with mobility. Neighborhoods were defined by census tract, and diversity of amenities was derived by using the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design's neighborhood development index (US Green Building Council, Washington, DC). This study aims to create awareness, both within the scientific community and among providers of sports facilities, for individuals with impaired or reduced mobility, promoting the development of technical solutions that allow greater autonomy and social integration of people with disabilities. The purpose of this work is, on the one hand, to evaluate the accessibility of sports facilities for people with reduced mobility and, on the other hand, to investigate why this user group has such low rates of participation in sporting activities. Firstly, using the Portuguese norms and legislation tra

Approximately one third of hospitalized older adults develop a new disability by discharge, which places them at risk for readmission, institutionalization, and death. Various risk factors, both modifiable and nonmodifiable, coalesce in the acute care setting. As frontline health care providers, nurses are crucial to the process of altering modifiable risk factors by assessing patients’ risk for functional decline during hospitalization using a standardized instrument and treating risk with evidence-based interventions. Barriers to meeting this goal must be overcome, such as a lack of evidence

A 65-year-old female was admitted with an 8-week history of gradual onset headache. The headache was worse in the morning and on bending forwards. This was associated with 1 week history of vomiting and 1 day history of difficulty in walking. Medical history was unremarkable apart from treated hypothyroidism. There was no history of trauma. Observations and physical examination were entirely normal. Routine blood tests including the ESR and clotting profile were normal. Given the history had red flags for headache, a CT scan was ordered and this showed bilateral subdural haematomas. The patien

BACKGROUND: A decline in mobility is a common feature of multiple sclerosis (MS). Community walking scales are used to categorize patients in their ability to move independently. The first purpose of this study was to determine which specific gait speed corresponded with the categories of the Modified Functional Walking Categories (MFWC). The second purpose was to determine the Minimally Important Change (MIC) in absolute gait speed using the MFWC and Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) as external criteria.
METHOD: MS patients were measured six times in 6 years. Gait velocity was measure

Occupational therapists have recognized the benefits that service dogs can provide people with disabilities. There are many anecdotal publications extolling the benefits of working with service dogs, but few rigorous studies exist to provide the evidence of the usefulness of this type of assistive technology option. This systematic review evaluates the published research that supports the use of service dogs for people with mobility-related physical disabilities. Articles were identified by computerized search of PubMed, CINAHL, PsycINFO, OT Seeker, the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews,
