Telehealth as a Bridge for Palliative and End-of-Life Care in Nursing Homes.

BACKGROUND: Older adults living in nursing homes experience high rates of serious illness, hospitalization, and death, yet access to specialty palliative care remains limited. The COVID-19 pandemic rapidly expanded telehealth use in nursing homes, creating new opportunities to remotely deliver palliative and end-of-life care. Understanding how telehealth supported or complicated palliative care during this period is critical to informing sustainable post-pandemic clinical and payment models. METHODS: We conducted a qualitative descriptive study using semi-structured interviews with 29 multidi

Daily temporal associations among AI replacement anxiety, state anxiety, and academic burnout indicators in medicine and nursing students: a 10-day diary study.

BACKGROUND: Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly entering medicine and nursing education, raising concerns about how healthcare students respond to AI-related occupational uncertainty. AI replacement anxiety (ARA) may become more or less salient across academic days, but little is known about its short-term within-person temporal associations with state anxiety and day-level academic burnout indicators. METHODS: This 10-day weekday diary study included 751 medicine and nursing students who provided 4,625 observed diary records after quality screening. Daily surveys assessed ARA and th

Vaccination Rates Among Long-Term Care Staff During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

OBJECTIVE: The COVID-19 pandemic had a profound impact on long-term care facilities, particularly nursing homes and assisted living communities (ALCs), leading to high mortality rates among residents. Vaccination of residents and staff in long-term care mitigated virus spread. However, we know little about vaccine uptake in assisted living compared with the nursing home setting. The purpose of this paper was to compare assisted living staff vaccination rates with similarly collected data on nursing homes soon after the vaccines became available, and to elucidate organizational factors that may

Living settings and cognitive impairment are stronger predictors of nursing home admission after hip fracture surgery than physical comorbidities A nationwide Danish cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: Sustaining a hip fracture is a life changing event for many elderlies. While doctors and researchers tend to be preoccupied with mortality and complication rates, patients are more concerned by other aspects e.g. loss of independence and ability to remain in their own home. This study aimed to i) determine age-stratified one-year event rates of admission to nursing home after discharge, and ii) identify risk factors associated with nursing home admission. METHODS: Community dwelling patients aged 60-100 years undergoing their first hip fracture surgery in 2005 - 2015 were identi

An interdisciplinary approach to the management of dysphagia.

Patients with dysphagia are often inappropriately managed. However, nurses can be trained to screen for swallowing difficulties and the introduction of an interdisciplinary dysphagia management model can improve both the initial management of dysphagic patients and the appropriateness of referrals to speech and language therapists.
