Adolescent survivors of childhood sexual abuse: the mediating role of attachment style and coping in psychological and interpersonal functioning.

OBJECTIVE: To examine attachment style and coping strategies as potential mediating variables between childhood sexual abuse (CSA) and psychological and interpersonal functioning in an attempt to explain variability in extent of disorder and level of functioning. METHOD: Eighty adolescent females, aged 14-16 years, answered questions regarding abuse history, attachment style, coping with an interpersonal stressor, depression and trauma symptomatology, and conflict with a best friend. RESULTS: Structural equation modeling analyses indicated that attachment style mediates the effects of CSA an

Psychological distress in young adults with well-controlled psoriasis.

INTRODUCTION: Psychological distress is common in psoriasis, but its prevalence and possible biological correlates in young adults with well-controlled disease remain unclear. In this study, we aimed to assess the presence of anxiety and depressive symptoms in young, well-treated psoriasis patients, who were primarily expected to have no or minimal psychological distress, and to explore potential associations with inflammatory and metabolic markers. METHODS: In a cross-sectional cohort of 80 psoriasis patients (women/male: 45/35; mean age 38.7 ± 4.2 years) psychological symptoms were assessed

Associations of 24-h movement behavior with mental health in adolescent athletes: a compositional isotemporal substitution analysis.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent athletes are exposed to high training loads and competitive pressure, which may increase the risk of psychological problems such as sport-related cognitive trait anxiety, mental fatigue, and other psychological symptoms. Understanding how 24-h movement behaviors-including moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA), light-intensity physical activity (LPA), sedentary behavior (SB), and sleep (SLP)-are associated with psychological outcomes is important for developing effective strategies to promote mental health in this population. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examin

Advancing cancer neuroscience through stress modulation: Interdisciplinary potential of psilocybin and ketamine.

Psychological stress not only undermines quality of life for people with cancer but also fuels tumor growth. Emerging evidence from the nascent field of cancer neuroscience suggests that adrenergic signaling from direct tumor-neuron interactions drives cancer progression, resistance to treatment, and worse outcomes. Cancer neuroscientists are increasingly seeking to repurpose psychoactive medications (e.g., β-blockers and others) to augment primary cancer therapies. Preclinical models reveal that psychological stress can be a key activator of the sympathetic pathways that promote pathological

Psychological abuse between parents: associations with child maltreatment from a population-based sample.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined the association between partner psychological abuse and child maltreatment perpetration. METHODS: This cross-sectional study examined a population-based sample of mothers with children aged 0-17 years in North and South Carolina (n=1,149). Mothers were asked about the occurrence of potentially neglectful or abusive behaviors toward their children by either themselves or their husband/partner in the past year. Partner psychological abuse was categorized as no psychological abuse (reference), husband perpetrates, wife perpetrates, or both perpetrate. Outcome measu

Dispositional optimism, pessimism, and psychological distress among Venezuelan migrants in Chile: The role of acculturative stress.

INTRODUCTION: Migrants often experience mental health challenges associated with acculturative stress. Dispositional traits, such as optimism and pessimism, may shape how individuals appraise and cope with these challenges, influencing their psychological distress. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to analyse the role of three dimensions of acculturative stress: integration difficulties, nostalgia, and structural barriers, in the relationship between optimism, pessimism and mental health symptoms among Venezuelan migrants living in Chile. METHOD: A two-wave longitudinal study was conducted with 22

Pain management strategies and their associations with quality of life and pain interference in women with chronic pelvic pain: A cross-sectional survey.

BackgroundChronic pelvic pain (CPP) affects an estimated 6-27% of women and is associated with substantial impairment in quality of life (QoL). Common conditions include endometriosis, vulvodynia, and interstitial cystitis. Management typically involves multiple biomedical and psychological strategies, often used in combination, yet their independent associations with QoL and pain interference remain unclear.ObjectivesTo examine associations between six pain management strategies (surgery, hormonal medication, non-hormonal medications/therapies, analgesia, alternative therapies, and psychologi

Childhood psychological maltreatment subtypes and depression among Chinese college students: the role of self-compassion and perceived negative attention bias.

BACKGROUND: Research on childhood psychological maltreatment lags behind that on other forms of childhood maltreatment. While it has been identified as a significant predictor of depression, the specific underlying mechanisms linking its subtypes (emotional abuse and emotional neglect) to depression remain unclear. This study aimed to examine the association between childhood psychological maltreatment and its subtypes and depression from both emotional factors (self-compassion) and cognitive factors (perceived negative attention bias), as well as the gender differences. METHODS: Using a ques

Metabolic constraints may both help and hinder cognitive models.

Constraining cognitive models based on the metabolic realities of the brain is a laudable goal. However, imposing strong constraints on nascent theories risks prematurely discarding potentially productive models. Furthermore, despite models of cognitive fatigue being an intuitive test case for Haueis and Colaço's approach, the strictly medium-independent nature of non-resource models (e.g., opportunity cost models) highlights some limits to the proposed approach.

Heterogeneity in high hypnotic suggestibility: Models, evidence, and synthesis.

Most empirical studies and theoretical models in research on suggestion and hypnosis presuppose that highly suggestible individuals comprise a uniform population. This assumption contrasts with consistent evidence for heterogeneity in this group, yet these findings have not been systematically integrated or evaluated against competing models of heterogeneity. In this article, I first outline the characteristics of heterogeneity among highly suggestible individuals, highlight methodological considerations, and review the assumptions of different models of heterogeneity. Next, I consider evidenc

Opportunity cost calculations only determine justified effort--or, what happened to the resource conservation principle?

We welcome the development of a new model on effort and performance and the critique on existing resource-based models. However, considering the vast evidence for the significant impact of experienced task demand on resource allocation, we conclude that Kurzban et al.'s opportunity cost model is only valid for one performance condition: if task demand is unknown or unspecified.

COVID-19, pandemic lockdowns and intimate partner violence among HIV-positive women in Ghana.

This study examines the prevalence and risk factors of physical, sexual, psychological, and economic violence during lockdowns associated with COVID-19 among HIV-positive women in Ghana. Data were collected in August 2021 from a cross-section of 538 HIV-positive women aged 18 years and older in the Lower Manya Krobo District in the Eastern region of Ghana. Logit models were used to explore relationships between women's self-reported experiences of physical, sexual, psychological /emotional, and economic violence under lockdown and key socio-economic and demographic characteristics. The finding

Intergenerational transmission of violence, self-control, and conjugal violence: a comparative analysis of physical violence and psychological aggression.

This paper is a sequel to Avakame (1998), a study which sought to determine whether (a) violence in families of origin affects males' psychological aggression toward wives, and (b) whether the intergenerational transmission effect is solely direct or mediated by Gottfredson and Hirschi's concept of self-control. The current research extends these questions to females' psychological aggression as well as males' and females' physical violence. The models were estimated using data from the 1975 National Family Violence Survey. Like its precursor, results of the present research suggest that it is

SimDE App: Simulating and visualizing formal theories using differential equations.

Psychological theories are often expressed verbally using natural language, which may lead to varying interpretations of the phenomenon under study. This potential confusion can be mitigated by formalizing verbal theories using mathematical language, which can help in defining, analyzing, and interpreting one's hypotheses in quantitative terms. Differential equations (DEs) are a class of models in the dynamical systems framework, particularly suited to many dynamic theories in psychology. However, there is a lack of tools for translating verbal theories into DE systems. To facilitate this tran

Influencing factors of employment decisions among physical education majors: The mediating role of psychological resilience and the moderating role of gender.

BACKGROUND: Physical education majors often encounter distinct challenges in making employment-related decisions, yet limited empirical research has explored the psychological factors influencing these decisions. METHODS: A total of 908 physical education majors from universities across China were surveyed using a random sampling method. Standardized and validated instruments were employed to measure active coping strategies, peer support, maladaptive perfectionism, psychological resilience, and employment decisions. A moderated mediation model was constructed and tested using partial least s
