A generational comparison of changes in mandibular third molars.

Due to recent increases in the number of cases of embedded mandibular third molars, the Department of Dental Radiology, Kyushu Dental College decided to investigate generational differences in their occurrence. For the purpose of investigation, 670 panoramic radiographs, obtained from two different generations (1970s and 1999s) of Kyushu Dental College students, wer used. There were significant statistical differences in the angle of eruption of the third molar between the 1970s and 1990s groups. The mandibular third molars in the 1990s group were growing at an abnormal angle (P < 0.05) and we…

The diagnosis of molar pregnancy by sonography and gross morphology.

BACKGROUND: In modern times molar pregnancies are often terminated before classical symptoms have developed. Sonography may not be conclusive and gross macroscopy may not reveal vesicles. If the aborted material is not sent for microscopy adequate follow-up of these patients will not be performed. The objective of this study was to evaluate the percentage of molar cases that potentially will be missed in a setting where material is submitted for histopathology only when sonography and/or gross macroscopy suggest complete- or partial hydatidiform mole. METHODS: Charts from 135 patients with co…

Remaining mandibular third molars in an adult population.

Although tooth loss with age has been extensively investigated, there appears to be no literature on the relationship of age to remaining mandibular third molars. The study showed that as age increases so does the frequency of absent vertically erupted mandibular third molars. However, no correlation was found between age and loss of mandibular impacted third molars in men of 71 years of age or older. The evidence presented here suggests that impacted mandibular third molars, which have not been infected, may be more likely to remain compared with other teeth at potential risk.

Predictive model for impaction of lower third molars.

The study was carried out to create and test a model for predicting impaction of lower third molars on the basis of radiographic findings at age 20 years. Fifty-six initially unerupted lower third molars were followed up for 6 years. Five radiographic findings in panoramic tomograms at age 20 were taken as variables. Clinical status at age 26 was taken as response. The radiographic features studied were angulation of tooth, development of root, state of impaction, depth in bone, and relation of the tooth to the ramus of the mandible and the second molar. With the use of logistic regression, un…

Third molars in Norwegian general dental practice.

A questionnaire containing 37 questions on oral surgery was mailed to a systematic random sample of 500 Norwegian general dental practitioners in October 1989. A 60% return rate was obtained. A selected part of the questionnaire was also presented to all 5th-year dental students in Bergen and Oslo. The total return rate was 43%. From the 17 questions dealt with in this paper the following conclusions were drawn: Norwegian general practitioners' attitudes towards indications for third-molar removal are in general agreement with the current conservative approach. Norwegian 5th-year dental studen…

Fusion of mandibular third and supernumerary fourth molars.

Fusion of the permanent molars is a relatively uncommon dental anomaly. In this article, a case of fusion of a symptomatic mandibular third molar with a supernumerary fourth molar is reported. The differentiation with other forms of 'double teeth' is explained and the possibility of the initial panoramic radiograph view being misinterpreted as an artefact is discussed.

Secondary retention of permanent molars: a histologic study.

The etiology of secondary retention is not well understood, but ankylosis is often considered to be an important factor in primary molars. Data concerning the mechanism of secondary retention in the permanent dentition are insufficient, although a possible role of ankylosis has been suggested. In order to analyze the frequency of occurrence and localization of ankylosis in secondarily retained permanent teeth, 26 secondarily retained molars and for comparison six normal molars were studied histologically. These data were compared with the clinical and radiographic findings. Areas of ankylosis …

Pathological sequelae of "neglected" impacted third molars.

An NIH conference on "Removal of Third Molars" debated the need for removal of asymptomatic impacted teeth with no evidence of pathology but stressed the need for long-range studies. The assumption is that "neglected" impacted third molars (ITMs) will sometime cause serious pathology. Examination of panoramic radiographs of 11,598 patients revealed 1,756 patients with 3,702 impacted teeth; average age 47 years, and an average retention period approximately 27 years. Dentigerous cystic changes occurred in about 30 ITMs (0.81%), internal resorption in 16 (0.43%), periodontal ligament damage and …

Dentinal innervation of impacted human third molars.

Five totally impacted third molars were studied in the transmission electron microscope for the presence of nervous structures in the dentin before eruption. In contradiction to earlier studies available, nervous structures were found in the predentin and the dentin of the impacted third molars in different parts of the crown and also in the predentin of the root.

Some further observations on submerging deciduous molars.

34 females and 20 males, all with one or more submerging deciduous molars, were compared with 30 female and 30 male controls. When groups were matched for sex, age and occlusion no conclusive evidence could be found to support the hypothesis that subjects with submerging deciduous molars have different facial proportions. There was a higher prevalence of developmentally absent pre-molar teeth in the submerging group (p less than 0.001). When males and females were compared, no significant differences were found in the number of submerging deciduous molars per patient, the location of those tee…

The gingival epithelium of rodent molars with limited eruption.

We have re-examined the arrangement of epithelia surrounding molar teeth with limited eruption in the rat, mouse and hamster. Our methods permitted enamel to be retained in paraffin and glycolmethacrylate sections, so providing optimal preservation of epithelial relationships. Three basic patterns of epithelial arrangement were observed on the various aspects of molars. Non-keratinized junctional epithelium covers the interdental septum and the base of all gingival crevices even in areas of gingival recession. In all areas other than the interdental septum, a fold of keratinized gingival epith…
