Monte Carlo simulations of 5/8'' NaI gamma camera detector response in radiological emergency preparedness.

Following a radiological or nuclear (RN) event there is a need for measurement equipment readily available for estimation of internal contamination. Previous studies have shown that the gamma camera is a feasible tool for estimation of whole-body activity for relevant radionuclides during the recovery phase of an accident, e.g. by using whole-spectrum analysis. However, this technique is limited by the difficulties to interpret the spectral information in cases where more than one radionuclide is present in the subject. In this study, a Monte Carlo (MC) model of a gamma camera with a crystal t

Assessing chest wall thickness sensitivity onin-vivolung counting efficiency in military-specific mesh-type computational phantoms for warfighter radiation triage.

In radiological and nuclear emergencies, military personnel and first responders are at elevated risk of internal contamination via inhalation of airborne radionuclides. Rapidin-vivoassessments are required for efficient triage, regulatory compliance, and medical intervention. This study investigates the impact of chest wall thickness (CWT) on lung counting efficiency using military-specific mesh-type human computational phantoms that represent the current standards and anthropomorphic parameters of U.S. members of the military. A 2″ × 2″ NaI(Tl) scintillation detector with digital base was mo

ComptoNet: a Compton-map guided deep learning framework for multi-scatter estimation in multi-source stationary CT.

Multi-source stationary computed tomography (MSS-CT) offers significant advantages in medical and industrial applications due to its gantryless scan architecture and capability of simultaneous multi-source emission. However, the lack of anti-scatter grid deployment in MSS-CT leads to severe forward and cross scatter contamination, necessitating accurate and efficient scatter correction. In this work, we propose ComptoNet, an innovative decoupled deep learning framework that integrates Compton-scattering physics with deep learning for scatter estimation in MSS-CT. The core innovation lies in th

Covalent organic frameworks for lipase adsorption: A multiscale simulation.

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have recently emerged as promising materials for enzyme immobilization, attributed to their substantial specific surface area, low density, uniform porosity and ease of functionalization. Investigating the interaction mechanisms between enzymes and COFs is crucial for the advancement of novel and efficient vectors. This study examines the adsorption behavior of Candida antarctica lipase B (CalB) on various functionalized TpPa-X COFs (TpPa-1, TpPa-AMC2NH2 and TpPa-AMCOOH), utilizing parallel tempered Monte Carlo and molecular dynamics simulations. The findings

Optimization and fabrication of a novel 3D-printed variable density range modulation device for proton FLASH beams.

BACKGROUND: For proton FLASH therapy, range-modulating devices are inserted in the beam path to create a spread-out-Bragg-peak (SOBP) for ultrafast delivery using a single energy pencil beam scanning technique. Current design typically consists of uniform density spikes with range modulation achieved by changing the area and height of the spikes, which has limited structural stability and modulation flexibility. PURPOSE: We present a new class of 3D-printed range-modulating devices for particle therapy with spatially modulated density. METHODS: PixelPrint technology (Laboratory for Advanced

Introducing quality by design approach in early process development to improve natural killer cell manufacturing robustness.

Process development employing a quality by design (QbD) approach has been applied across various modalities and is also recommended for the development of cell-based therapeutics. Introducing QbD principles from the early stages of process development enables the establishment of manufacturing processes that are robust, high-yield and have a low risk of failure. The aim of this study was to develop a robust manufacturing process for natural killer (NK) cells by implementing a QbD strategy in the initial phase of process development. The QbD approach was applied to enhance NK cell proliferation

The Abridged Microdosimetric Distribution Methodology for flexible and efficient relative biological effectiveness calculations in ion radiotherapy.

Objective. Current clinical approaches for calculating the relative biological effectiveness (RBE) in ion beam therapy rely on pre-computed lookup tables tied to a specific RBE model and cell line. While practical, this framework limits flexibility, as a subsequent RBE recalculation with a different biological model or cell line requires re-running the radiation transport simulations. This work systematically benchmarks a computationally efficient method that allows accurate and flexible RBE calculations in ion beam therapy.Approach.The Abridged Microdosimetric Distribution Methodology (AMDM)

Where do we invest money to implement active learning on caries detection? An economic evaluation.

This trial-based economic evaluation aimed to estimate the incremental cost of implementing an active learning strategy (theoretical-practical workshop) to substitute the didactic lecture as the sole method for students training in caries detection. We also provided a budget impact analysis and explored the composition of costs related to the activity. Data from the coordinating centre of a multicentre randomized and controlled study (IuSTC01) was analyzed as the first part of our main economic analysis plan. The perspective of the educational provider (the institution implementing the activit

Exploring relationship between hypercholesterolemia and instability of atherosclerotic plaque - An approach based on a matrix population model.

Background: Cardiovascular diseases have long been studied to identify their causal factors and counteract them effectively. Atherosclerosis, an inflammatory process of the blood vessel wall, is a common cardiovascular disease. Among the many well-known risk factors, hypercholesterolemia is undoubtedly a significant condition for atherosclerotic plaque formation and is linked to atherosclerosis on many levels, i.e. cell interactions, cytokines levels, diet, and lifestyle. Current studies suggest that controlling balance between proinflammatory (M1) and anti-inflammatory (M2) types of macrophag
