BACKGROUND: A subgroup of individuals with vestibular dysfunction and visual motion hypersensitivity (VMH) become dizzy and imbalanced in response to movement of the visual environment. The purpose of this study was to investigate ocular fixational stability during gaze on a target, with and without visual background movement. Binocular vision functions were also examined as possible contributory factors to the dizziness and imbalance.
METHODS: Twenty-four individuals with VMH, 20 with vestibular disorders without VMH and 20 healthy subjects were tested. Assignment to the experimental group w…

Three experiments investigated 5- through 8-month-olds' ability to encode self-propelled and caused motion and examined whether processing of motion onset changes when crawling begins. Infants were habituated (Experiments 1 and 2) or familiarized (Experiment 3) with simple causal and noncausal launching events. They then viewed the caused-to-move and self-propelled objects from the events both stationary and side-by-side, and their preferential looking to the objects was assessed. Results revealed that 5- and 6-month-olds displayed a different pattern of looking than did 8-month-olds. More not…

Visual images consisting of repetitive patterns can elicit striking illusory motion percepts. For almost 200 years, artists, psychologists, and neuroscientists have debated whether this type of illusion originates in the eye or in the brain. For more than a decade, the controversy has centered on the powerful illusory motion perceived in the painting Enigma, created by op-artist Isia Leviant. However, no previous study has directly correlated the Enigma illusion to any specific physiological mechanism, and so the debate rages on. Here, we show that microsaccades, a type of miniature eye moveme…

The relative visual positions of briefly flashed stimuli are systematically modified in the presence of motion signals. We have recently shown that the perceived position of a spatially extended flash stimulus is anisotropically shifted toward a single convergent point back along the trajectory of a moving object without a significant change in the perceived shape of the flash [Watanabe, K., & Yokoi, K. (2006). Object-based anisotropies in the flash-lag effect. Psychological Science, 17, 728-735]. In the previous experiment, the moving stimulus moved in both retinotopic and environmental coord…

A rare case of systolic anterior motion (SAM) after mitral valve repair is described. A temporary postoperative left ventricular (LV) dysfunction protected against this complication during the early postoperative period. Only on day 9 postoperatively did the left ventricle recover and SAM develop, with significant obstruction of the LV outflow tract. Subsequently, mitral valve replacement was required. This case demonstrates the importance of the LV geometrical relationships that predispose to this complication.

This review article summarises the research on the motion-onset visual evoked potentials (VEPs) and important motion stimulus parameters which have been clarified. For activation of the visual motion processing system and evocation of the motion-onset specific N2 peak (with latency of 160-200ms) from the extra-striate temporo-occipital and/or parietal cortex, the following stimulus parameters can be recently recommended: low luminance (<ca. 20cd/m(2)) and low contrast (<ca. 10%-sinusoidally modulated) of a moving structure with low velocity and temporal frequency (<ca. 6Hz). A short (up to 200…

Vertigo is a sensation of movement when no movement is actually occurring. It is often accompanied by visceral autonomic symptoms including pallor, diaphoresis, nausea, and vomiting. Vertigo is similar to motion sickness in that both may be caused by vestibular stimulation that does not match an internal model of expected environmental stimuli. Indeed, a functioning vestibular system is necessary for the perception of motion sickness. For this reason, many of the same drugs are used to treat both conditions. The investigation of drugs that treat motion sickness helps to discover medications th…

Motion sickness (MS) has been found to increase body-core cooling during immersion in 28 degrees C water, an effect ascribed to attenuation of the cold-induced peripheral vasoconstriction (Mekjavic et al. in J Physiol 535(2):619-623, 2001). The present study tested the hypothesis that a more profound cold stimulus would override the MS effect on peripheral vasoconstriction and hence on the core cooling rate. Eleven healthy subjects underwent two separate head-out immersions in 15 degrees C water. In the control trial (CN), subjects were immersed after baseline measurements. In the MS-trial, su…

INTRODUCTION: Surveys of transportation by sea, land, and air indicate that women are more susceptible to motion sickness than men, showing higher incidences of vomiting and reporting more symptoms such as nausea. The cause of this greater motion sickness susceptibility in women is unknown. One suggestion is that it is due to the functioning of the female endocrine system, but there are contradictions between existing studies.
HYPOTHESIS: Motion sickness in women varies across the menstrual cycle.
METHODS: There were 12 healthy women, age 24.4 +/- 6.6 yr (mean +/- SD), not using contraceptiv…

Quantifying movement disorders is becoming crucially important in neurosurgery units to evaluate the efficacy of new therapeutic interventions such as deep brain stimulation. Kinematic analysis, available for more than a century, may represent an adequate solution to this problem. However, quantifying movement disorders poses a number of technical problems. To help clinicians quantify movement disorders, the authors present data recorded in patients with dystonic syndromes and explore the question of movement "normality" in these patients when they receive deep brain stimulation of the interna

Paradoxical vocal fold motion (PVFM) is a complex adductory disorder of the vocal folds that frequently is mistaken for asthma. PVFM typically requires behavioral intervention by a trained speech-language pathologist for complete resolution of the symptoms. Once thought to be limited to adults, PVFM has been increasingly documented and successfully treated in the child and adolescent population. Understanding PVFM requires thorough knowledge of the differential diagnoses, the clinical features of PVFM, the differentiation of PVFM from asthma, the medical professionals involved in the diagnosis…

BACKGROUND: It is commonly assumed that car passengers who suffer from motion sickness will benefit from being able to see the road ahead.
HYPOTHESIS: It was hypothesized that variations in the external view (including restrictions to forward view and the provision of an artificial real-time video view) would affect the development of sickness during a 30-min suburban car journey.
METHOD: Motion sickness was investigated in 4 experiments using 15 different conditions, with 20 subjects in each condition. The conditions involved artificial restrictions to view, restrictions arising from differ…

A computational model of a stealth strategy inspired by the apparent mating tactics of male hoverflies is presented. The stealth strategy (motion camouflage) paradoxically allows a predator to approach a moving prey in such a way that it appears to be a stationary object. In the model, the predators are controlled by neural sensorimotor systems that base their decisions on realistic levels of input information. They are shown to be able to employ motion camouflage to approach prey that move along both real hoverfly flight paths and artificially generated flight paths. The camouflaged approache…

Motion sickness adds to the discomfort of many patients being transported by ambulance. Recent research has demonstrated the effectiveness of oxygen therapy in reducing motion sickness during transport to hospital. However, patients reported negative reactions to wearing a facemask, which produced feelings of claustrophobia and anxiety. We therefore tested the hypothesis that supplemental oxygen inhaled from a new oxygen delivery device OxyArm, which avoids direct contact with the patient's skin, may reduce the incidence of motion sickness and increase patient satisfaction. Forty patients suff…

BACKGROUND: In many environments associated with motion sickness there are low frequency motions in several axes, including roll. Roll motion has often been assumed to be a cause of motion sickness, either alone or in combination with motions in other axes. However, there have been no systematic studies of the effects of roll frequency on sickness.
HYPOTHESIS: It was hypothesized that sickness caused by roll oscillation would depend on the frequency of roll.
METHOD: There were 100 male subjects (aged 18 to 26 yr) who participated in a laboratory study. Prior to experiencing motion, all subje…

We investigated whether postural instability can predict motion sickness and studied relations among instability, motion sickness, and vection. Nine men and 4 women (mean age = 19.85 years) were exposed, while standing, to an optical simulation of body sway. Head motion was recorded using a magnetic tracking system. Postural instabilities were observed prior to the onset of motion sickness. Vection was reported by most participants, including all who became ill. A discriminant analysis revealed that parameters of postural motion accurately predicted motion sickness. The results confirm that po…

These experiments use functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to reveal neural activity uniquely associated with perception of biological motion. We isolated brain areas activated during the viewing of point-light figures, then compared those areas to regions known to be involved in coherent-motion perception and kinetic-boundary perception. Coherent motion activated a region matching previous reports of human MT/MST complex located on the temporo-parieto-occipital junction. Kinetic boundaries activated a region posterior and adjacent to human MT previously identified as the kinetic-occip…
