Dabupi decoction mitigates fluorouracil-induced intestinal mucositis via farnesoid X receptor activation and dihydropyrimidine dehydrogenase upregulation.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: 5-Fluorouracil (5-FU) is a widely utilized antimetabolite in colorectal cancer chemotherapy, primarily exerting its cytotoxic effects by irreversibly inhibiting thymidylate synthase (TS). This inhibition leads to a reduction in deoxythymidine monophosphate (dTMP), which disrupts DNA synthesis and repair. A major challenge in 5-FU treatment is the dose-limiting toxicity of chemotherapeutic-induced intestinal mucositis. Da-Bu-Pi Decoction (DBPD), a well-established formula in traditional Chinese medicine for treating spleen-stomach deficiency, is often used to enh…

Immunonutrients for radiation-induced oral mucositis in head and neck cancer: current evidence and future perspectives.

Radiation-induced oral mucositis (RIOM) is one of the most common and severe complications in patients with head and neck malignancies undergoing radiotherapy or chemoradiotherapy, with an incidence of 80-100%. More than half of patients develop severe RIOM (grade 3-4), resulting in intense pain, dysphagia, and malnutrition, which significantly impairs quality of life. However, conventional nutritional support primarily provides basic nutrients and lacks immunomodulatory effects. Immunonutrition, characterized by a favorable safety profile and good tolerability, not only meets nutritional requ…

Efficacy and Safety of Topical Steroid Therapy for Oral Mucositis During Cancer Chemotherapy: A Scoping Review.

Oral mucositis (OM) is a common and debilitating complication of cancer chemotherapy and targeted therapies, significantly affecting patients' quality of life and potentially leading to treatment delays or dose reductions. Although topical corticosteroids have demonstrated anti-inflammatory effects, their clinical use for OM remains limited, particularly in countries such as Japan, due to regulatory and safety concerns. This scoping review examined existing evidence on the efficacy and safety of topical corticosteroid therapy-administered via mouthwash or ointment, for the prevention and manag…

Microneedle patches containing mesoporous polydopamine nanoparticles loaded with triamcinolone acetonide for the treatment of oral mucositis.

Oral mucositis (OM) is the most common disease of the oral mucosa, which affects people's daily production and life. Triamcinolone ointment is the common clinical drug for OM treatment. However, the hydrophobic properties of triamcinolone acetonide (TA) and the complex microenvironment of the oral cavity led to its low bioavailability and unstable therapeutic effects on ulcer wounds. Herein, dissolving microneedle patches (MNs) composed of mesoporous polydopamine nanoparticles (MPDA) loaded with TA (TA@MPDA), sodium hyaluronic acid (HA), and Bletilla striata polysaccharide (BSP) are prepared a…
