OBJECTIVES: Extramedullary disease (EMD) is characterized by plasma cells outside of bone marrow in multiple myeloma (MM) patients, which results in an adverse prognosis. Cryptococcosis is an opportunistic fungal infection that is commonly associated with an immune-compromised state. Cases of cryptococcosis have rarely been reported in patients with multiple myeloma (MM). However, cryptococcosis as a presenting symptom of MM has never been reported. We presented here a case of neuromeningeal cryptococcosis in a patient without underlying diseases, who has revealed IgA-λ MM. Early detection and treatment of cryptococcosis are essential to reduce morbidity.

Multiple myeloma (MM) is the second most common hematologic malignancy in the world. Even though survival rates have significantly risen over the past years, MM remains incurable, and is also far from reaching the point of being managed as a chronic disease. This paper reviews the evolution of MM therapies, focusing on anti-MM drugs that target the molecular mechanisms of nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) signaling. We also provide our perspectives on contemporary research findings and insights for future drug development.

Monoclonal plasma cell gammopathies (MPCG) describe several forms of abnormal plasma cell proliferation. Their prevalence increases with age. Initially asymptomatic, MPCG can evolve differently and they can tend towards more advanced stages, sometimes associated with severe complications. Most patients are diagnosed by their general practitioner, who then offers a joint follow-up with the specialist. It therefore seems important to review the diagnostic and therapeutic management of MPCG, as well as their potential complications and treatments adverse effects.
