The course of the acute renal failure (ARF) was studied in 3 patients with rhabdomyolysis (1 with the position compression syndrome, 1 with march myoglobinuria, and 1 with chronic recurrent rhabdomyolysis). The ARF syndromes were revealed in 2 patients 5-7 days after onset of the disease; in 1 patient (chronic recurrent rhabdomyolysis), ARF recurred. This suggests that the patients developed acute interstitial nephritis (AIN) Prolonged myolytic conditions due to ill-timed initiation of treatment led to the fact that AIN was complicated by ARF in 2 patients, and 1 patient with chronic myopathy …

Myophosphorylase deficiency (McArdle syndrome) is an uncommon condition characterized by exercise intolerance, muscle cramping, and myoglobinuria. Although the original report by McArdle dealt with a sporadic case, subsequent cases reported in the literature show high familial incidence and consanguinity, implying that the defect is transmitted as a rare recessive gene or a possible sex-limited mode of inheritance. The present report describes the clinical, histoenzymatic, and biochemical findings in a 40-year-old woman with myophosphorylase deficiency. The family history reveals that four oth…

A compartmental syndrome is defined as a condition in which increased pressure within a space compromises the circulation to the contents of … circulation. Elevation of an extremity afflicted with a compartmental syndrome is contraindicated. Myoglobinuria and renal failure may complicate severe cases.

Rhabdomyolysis (RML) is a pathological entity characterized by symptoms of myalgia, weakness and dark urine (which is often not present) resulting in respiratory failure and altered mental status. Laboratory testing for myoglobinuria is pathognomonic but so often not present during the time of testing that serum creatine kinase should always be sent when the diagnosis is suspected. Kidney injury from RML progresses through multiform pathways resulting in acute tubular necrosis. Early treatment (ideally<6 hoursfrom onset) is needed with volume expansion of all non-overloaded patients along with…

PURPOSE: Rhabdomyolysis is a condition characterized by muscle damage and degeneration of muscle cells after strenuous, overexertion exercise. Although the incidence of severe rhabdomyolysis is rare, this condition can be dangerous and even fatal. Eccentric exercise protocols are currently being used to induce and study mild forms of muscle damage. However, serious adverse events can occur in these laboratory investigations. The purpose of this report was to expose some of the adverse events resulting from performance of eccentric exercise protocols to study muscle damage in humans.
