Yellow nail syndrome: resolution of yellow nails after successful treatment of breast cancer.

Yellow nail syndrome (YNS) is a rare entity of unknown cause in which congenitally hypoplastic lymphatics play a major role in the clinical manifestations of the disease. YNS has been associated with many malignancies and immune disorders. We report a case of new-onset YNS associated with breast cancer and dramatic improvement in the yellow nails with cancer treatment.

Complications of the Bailey-Dubow elongating nail in osteogenesis imperfecta: 34 children with 110 nails.

The Bailey-Dubow nail, inserted in the femur or tibia of 34 children with osteogenesis imperfecta (OI), was studied retrospectively. Comparing the various groups of OI, no significant difference was found. Location of the nail (tibia or femur) did not influence the complication rate significantly. The reoperation rate was 29%, a rate comparable to that reported in earlier studies. The part of the nail located around the knee had a significantly higher migration rate (P = 0.005 at obturator ends and P = 0.007 at sleeve ends). Migration of the nail was the reason to reoperate in 50% of the patie

[Retrograde nailing of humerus shaft fractures with the unreamed humerus nail. An international multicenter study].

Combined with the new unreamed humeral nail (UHN) (Synthes), the retrograde approach to the endomedullary canal of the humeral shaft promises careful reduction and fixation of humeral shaft fractures. This prospective multicenter study reports and analyses 102 retrograde nailings with the UHN and their operative procedures. Seven patients with pathological fractures have died meanwhile, but 75 patients could be followed up until bone healing. Seventy-three fresh humeral shaft fractures, 12 pseudarthrosis, 3 refractures and 14 pathological fractures have been treated with the UHN. In 98 cases (

[The interposition nail in diaphyseal bone defects and arthrodesis nail in failed knee-joint replacement].

Our clinical experience with different constructions of interposition and arthrodesis nails, used in 3 and 12 patients respectively, is presented. It has shown that cemented intramedullary nailing for the stabilization of long bones and the knee joint using an approach from the site of the defect is a useful additional means in reconstructive bone and joint surgery.

Effect of axial stress-loaded magnesium alloy intramedullary nails on bone fracture healing.

Biodegradable magnesium (Mg) alloys are promising orthopedic implants. However, the synergistic effects of their degradation and physiological loading on fracture healing require further investigation. This study evaluated Mg-Zn-Y-Nd alloy intramedullary (IM) nails in a rat tibiofibular fracture model under 10 N axial loading. A combined approach of finite element analysis (FEA) and in vivo experiments was utilized to assess stress distribution, degradation kinetics and biological response. FEA validated a dynamic load-sharing mechanism, where maximum callus strain decreased from 1530 to 233 μ…

Femur Fractures Distal to Long and Short Cephalomedullary Nails: A Comparative Multicenter Study.

INTRODUCTION: Cephalomedullary nails (CMNs) are commonly used to treat intertrochanteric hip fractures. Subsequent fractures distal to an existing CMN are a challenging complication with patterns and management that vary based on nail length. Whether short or long CMNs allow for less complicated surgical revision or better postoperative outcomes is unknown. The aim of this study was to compare the treatment strategies and outcomes of fractures distal to short versus long CMNs. METHODS: This multicenter retrospective study identified 58 patients who underwent surgical management of a fracture …

Five Coffin Nails to Informed Consent: An Autoethnography of Suffering Complications in Breastfeeding.

This autoethnography describes an illness episode caused by breastfeeding complications. It focuses on informed consent processes accompanying this illness episode. Informed consent is a cornerstone of ethical medical practice and has to be obtained before a medical intervention can legally be implemented. It is therefore not trivial that in practice, informed consent processes often fail to achieve what they are set out to. With this autoethnography, I want to provide a review of how informed consent processes can fail in the context of breastfeeding, but also draw attention to what these sit

A Foreign Body in an Unexpected Place-Ingested Hardware Nails Within the Appendix.

Foreign body ingestion is commonly encountered in clinical practice, with over 100,000 cases reported annually in the United States. The majority of objects pass through the gastrointestinal tract spontaneously and without consequence, with fewer than 1% of objects requiring surgical intervention. Foreign bodies have rarely been found lodged within the appendix. We report the therapeutic management of a young patient who ingested over 30 hardware nails. The patient originally underwent an esophagogastroduodenoscopy with attempted removal from the stomach and duodenum, though only 3 nails were …

Displaced Tibia Fractures in Adolescents: Closed Reduction and Casting Versus Flexible Intramedullary Nails.

INTRODUCTION: Although there has been a recent trend towards the operative intervention of pediatric diaphyseal tibial fractures, there is sparse literature that supports this trend. This study compares the outcomes in children between 10 and 18 years of age with diaphyseal tibial fractures who undergo nonoperative treatment with closed reduction and casting (CRC) to those who undergo operative treatment with flexible intramedullary nailing. METHODS: A retrospective chart review was performed of all patients between 10 and 18 years of age who underwent treatment for tibia fractures at the aut

[Application of motorized intramedullary lengthening nails in skeletally immature patients : Indications and limitations].

BACKGROUND: Limb lengthening and deformity correction with motorized intramedullary lengthening nails is a more comfortable and equally safe procedure than the use of external fixators. While this treatment is a well-established method in adults, intramedullary nailing for skeletally immature patients remains a challenge and is the focus of current clinical investigations. OBJECTIVE: Elucidation of the indications for the application of femoral and tibial lengthening nails in skeletally immature patients, presentation of essential characteristics and limitations of the treatment. MATERIAL AN…
