A well-differentiated neuroendocrine carcinoma of the stomach (gastric carcinoid) with transcoelomic and lymph node metastasis was confirmed on post-mortem examination of a 3-year-old, spayed female, domestic ferret (Mustela putorius furo). The animal was initially presented with a history of persistent vomiting which progressed to weight loss, a palpable abdominal mass, and melena. The ferret received palliative treatment and was euthanized 9 mo after initial presentation. The clinical, ultrasonographical, cytological, gross pathological, histopathological, and immunohistochemical findings ar

INTRODUCTION: Cutaneous spread of solid visceral metastasis is very unusual presentation, usually in breast, lung, colon, ovarian carcinomas, and malignant melanoma. Less than 5% of cases of cutaneous spread are from renal neoplasms.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: We present the case of a 48-year-old woman with a large lower lip tumor whose anatomopathological analysis of the lesion led us to identify a Clear Cell Renal Cell Carcinoma (ccRCC).
DISCUSSION: The clinical manifestations of the ccRCC can be mild, generating a late diagnosis through metastasis of primary neoplasia. Their presentations can

Tumors of thymus gland are rare and account for 0.2% to 1.5% of all the neoplasms. They constitute a heterogeneous group that has an unknown etiology and a complex as well as varied biology. This has led to difficulty in their histological classification and in predicting their prognostic and survival markers. Among them, thymic carcinoma is the most aggressive thymic epithelial tumor exhibiting cytological malignant features and a diversity of clinicopathological characteristics that can cause diagnostic dilemmas, misdiagnosis, and therapeutic challenge. We herein describe a case of a 60-year

OBJECTIVE: Assessment of benign and malignant lesions of the parotid gland, including metastatic lesions, is challenging with current imaging methods. Fluorine-18 FDG PET/CT is a noninvasive imaging modality that provides both anatomic and metabolic information. Semiquantitative data obtained from PET/CT, also known as PET/CT parameters, are maximum, mean, or peak standardized uptake values (SUVs); metabolic tumor volume; total lesion glycolysis; standardized added metabolic activity; and normalized standardized added metabolic activity. Our aim was to determine whether FDG PET/CT parameters c

PURPOSE: Endobronchial metastases from extrapulmonary solid tumors are a rare event and currently available epidemiological and clinico-pathological data mainly derive from anecdotal case reports.
METHODS: A series of 174 consecutive cases of endobronchial metastases from extrathoracic solid tumors were collected over a period of 18 years. Immunohistochemistry was performed in 115 cases. Complete imaging features were available in 81 patients, and analysis of the latency period between primitive tumor diagnosis and occurrence of endobronchial metastasis was obtained.
RESULTS: Among all bronc

To study the correlation of ultrasonographic signs of small breast cancer (maximum diameter ≤2.0 cm) with axillary lymph node metastasis, pre-operative ultrasonographic images of 153 small breast malignant neoplasms in 143 breast cancer patients were analyzed according to their pathologic features. Of the small breast tumors included, 47 showed axillary lymph node metastasis. Diagnosis of all patients was obtained with radical axillary surgery or a sentinel lymph node biopsy procedure. Ultrasonographic signs included irregular shape, microlobulated contour, spiculation, microcalcification, pos

Metastases are defined as the appearance of neoplasms in parts of the body remote from the site of the primary tumor. Metastasis can occur through one of three processes: direct seeding of body cavities or surfaces, lymphatic spread, and hematogenous spread. The importance of laboratory utilization in the diagnosis of metastasis is explored using a case study of a 39-year-old female with metastatic breast carcinoma to the brain. This case study was carried out using clinical records, laboratory results, pathology reports, and physician interviews. Cerebrospinal fluid was obtained and examined

An AgNOR count using the Smith and Crocker [Histopathology 12:113-125, 1988] method of staining was performed on 200 cases of carcinoma of the breast. A count of coarse AgNORs per nucleus was made on 50 random cells and the mean of their number per nucleus calculated. The relationship of a single variable "AgNOR count" to other variables such as cell size, histological grade, number of positive ipsilateral axillary lymph nodes, and presence of metastasis in regions other than the ipsilateral axillary lymph nodes was found using a univariate method of analysis. Also, the effect of different ind

HISTORY AND CLINICAL FINDINGS: The histological investigation of a surgical specimen (after cholecystectomy) from a 73-year-old woman revealed a poorly differentiated carcinoma with glandular structures and a lymph node metastasis.
INVESTIGATIONS: Comparative immunochemistry, done to exclude metastatic growth of the previously demonstrated endometrioid ovarian carcinoma, was (1) negative for CK7 and CA125, positive for CK20, chromogranin A and synaptophysin (gall bladder and lymph node metastasis); (2) positive for CK7 and CA125, negative for CK20, chromogranin A and synaptophysin (ovary).

Prediction of future suffering could improve palliative care. To identify the factors contributing to physical symptoms, a prospective study was performed on two series of hospice inpatients with cancer (n = 150 and n = 200, respectively). Physical symptoms, patients' characteristics, and tumor locations were recorded using a structured protocol on admission and throughout the clinical course. Common symptoms on admission and during the patient's course were pain (65%, 88%), general malaise (58%, 77%), anorexia (57%, 94%), constipation (33%, 71%), dyspnea (33%, 66%), nausea/vomiting (29%, 48%)

INTRODUCTION: Cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) is the second most common cutaneous neoplasm, and its incidence is on the rise. While most cSCCs have an excellent prognosis, certain risk factors, especially immunosuppression, have been associated with higher rates of local recurrence (LR), metastasis, and poor prognosis. This study aims to assess the risk factors for LR and metastasis development in cSCC among solid organ transplant recipients (SOTRs) and compare these rates with those in immunocompetent patients.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective observational study included cSCC

BACKGROUND: Foot and ankle soft tissue sarcomas (STSs) are rare neoplasms associated with a high risk of local recurrence and metastasis. Although amputation is often performed, its impact on prognosis remains unknown. The aims of our systematic review were identifying risk factors for (1) disease-specific death, (2) local recurrence, (3) metastasis, and assessing (4) whether the type of surgery (amputation or limb-salvage) affected disease-specific survival.
METHODS: This systematic review was conducted following PRISMA guidelines. The PubMed, Embase, and Scopus databases were searched. Our

Primitive neuroectodermal tumors (PNET) are very rare tumors that belong to a family of malignant neoplasms of tiny round cells which are derived from the neural crest. This report discusses a rare case of an adult woman with esophageal PNET, confirmed by immunohistochemistry, that presented with metastasis to the pineal gland. To our knowledge, this is the first case report of a PNET with these features. Despite surgery and chemotherapeutic treatment, our case has shown disease progression.

We report the clinicopathologic features of 24 uterine primary and metastatic endometrial stromal sarcomas with fibromyxoid features (ESS-F) and smooth muscle differentiation (ESS-SM) (endometrial stromal sarcoma variants). Two groups of tumors were retrieved from the surgical pathology files at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center: 1) gynecologic mesenchymal neoplasms with striking smooth muscle or fibroblastic differentiation that did not meet the clinical or histologic criteria for leiomyosarcoma or other established neoplasms containing smooth muscle; and 2) metastatic lesions showing ov

Carcinoid tumors are neuroendocrine neoplasms derived from enterochromaffin cells. Skeletal metastases from carcinoid tumors are considered to be extremely rare. In this study, we present two cases of carcinoid tumors that metastasized to the bone. Furthermore, we review 50 published case reports and reveal the features of skeletal metastasis of carcinoid tumors. The first case involved a 59-year-old man with a history of multiple metastases of a lung carcinoid tumor. The patient complained of back pain and numbness in the lower limbs. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed metastases in the thor

Tumor metastasis is an important clinical problem, contributing to the majority of cancer-related deaths. The recent discovery of metastasis suppressor genes, such as N-myc downstream-regulated gene-1 (Ndrg-1), has introduced a novel approach to treating cancer and preventing metastasis. Ndrg-1 has been identified as a protein involved in the differentiation of epithelial cells. In addition, Ndrg-1 expression can be regulated by androgens and is involved in the pathology of the disease, Hereditary Motor and Sensory Neuropathy-Lom (HMSNL). However, one of the most well documented links between

BACKGROUND: This report presents a case of esophageal and nodal metastasis in a primary pulmonary histiocytic sarcoma in a dog. Histiocytic sarcoma is a malignant neoplasm originating from histiocytic cells, characterized by its aggressive nature, high metastatic potential and high mortality rate. Pulmonary involvement occasionally results in pleural effusion and regional lymph node involvement, such as the tracheobronchial, sternal, and mediastinal lymph nodes. Thoracic radiography is the preferred complementary diagnostic test when respiratory disorders are suspected, as it can identify pulm

Pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP) refers to accumulation of mucinous ascites with or without neoplastic cells in the peritoneal cavity. It most commonly originates from a low or a high grade primary appendiceal mucinous neoplasm. Though adenocarcinoma of gall bladder has been reported to give rise to PMP, to the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of a PMP arising from a low grade mucinous tumour of the gall bladder. A 72-year-old patient was diagnosed with PMP 1.5 years after a cholecystectomy. After initial oral TS1 (combination of tegafur, gimeracil and oteracil) and later intraperit
