Cancer is an important cause of mortality in patients on hemodialysis and kidney transplant recipients. Immunodepression and the genotoxic action of uremia are critical pathogenic agents. A 59-year-old man, ex-smoker, who had been on hemodialysis for seven months because of uremic degeneration of diabetic nephropathy, underwent a combined kidney-pancreas transplant in 1991, complicated by slow-resolution CMV infection. In 1993, after kidney graft failure due to chronic rejection, hemodialysis treatment was restarted with good pancreatic function. Steroid therapy was interrupted and azathioprin

Keratoacanthoma (KA) is a rapidly growing, low-grade neoplasm of pilo-sebaceous and hair follicle units which most often appears on the sun-exposed skin of the middle aged and older persons with multiple or localized occurrence. This tumor is dome-shaped nodule with a central keratinous plug. The etiology of this tumor is not obvious. Exposure to excessive sunlight is the most frequently noted responsible factor in the etiology of KA. About 80% of the tumors occur on the face. The histological features of the KA are often very similar to those of a cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma; however, t

Oral verrucous carcinoma (OVC) is a rare variant of squamous cell carcinoma with a characteristic morphology and specific behavior. To date, few studies are available focusing the prevalence and clinicopathologic features of the oral verrucous carcinoma in Brazilian population. A total of 3,500 primary oral well-differentiated squamous cell carcinoma surgically excised in the A.C. Camargo Cancer Hospital and Amaral Carvalho Cancer Hospital, Brazil, from 1980 to 2000 were retrospectively reviewed. Twenty cases of verrucous carcinomas were identified, most of them occurring in older male with ag

Central mucoepidermoid carcinoma (CMEC) is a rare pathological entity with only a few case reports in the literature. The present case reported an uncommon occurrence of CMEC mimicking an odontogenic lesion in a young patient. A 17-year-old female patient sought dental care due to a slight swelling located in the posterior region of the mandible on the left side. Radiographic exams revealed an osteolytic lesion with defined limits in relation to proximity to the pericoronal follicle of tooth #38. The clinical and radiographic diagnostic hypothesis was an odontogenic lesion. Histological sectio

UNLABELLED: Nipple adenoma is a relatively rare benign breast neoplasm, and cases of the disease arising from the axillary accessory breast have very seldom been reported in the English literature. We report a case of nipple adenoma arising from axillary accessory breast including clinical and pathological findings. An 82-year-old woman presented with the complaint of a small painful mass in the right axilla. Physical examination confirmed a well-defined eczematous crusted mass that was 8 mm in size. The diagnosis of nipple adenoma was made from an excisional specimen on the basis of character

BACKGROUND: Squamous odontogenic tumor (SOT) is a rare benign odontogenic epithelial neoplasm. A slow-growing painless expansive swelling is the common presenting symptom. Histopathologically, SOT can be easily misdiagnosed as an acanthomatous ameloblastoma. Although Notch receptors and ligands have been shown to play a role in cell fate decisions in ameloblastomas, the role of these cell signaling molecules in SOT is unknown.
CASE REPORT: This paper describes a case of SOT affecting the anterior mandible of a 10-year-old Indian female. The patient was treated by local surgical excision and t

Desmoplastic small round cell tumor (DSRCT) is a rare malignant mesenchymal neoplasm that typically affects young patients and presents as large intraabdominal masses. We report a rare case of parotid gland DSRCT in a 38-year-old man. The tumor cells were large sized and form irregular nests embedded in abundant desmoplastic stroma. Immunohistochemically, the tumor cells were positive for cytokeratin, GATA3, p40, and p63. Working differential diagnosis included squamous cell carcinoma, myoepithelial carcinoma, hyalinizing clear cell carcinoma, NUT (nuclear protein of the testis) carcinoma, and

CASE REPORT: We report the case of a 74-year old woman who presented with an ulcerated mass of the vagina. Histology of the tumor showed malignant mixed mullerian tumor (MMMT) with squamous and spindle cell stromal components, associated with high-grade vaginal intraepithelial neoplasia (VaIN 3). Immunohistochemical study of the neoplasm revealed that the malignant stromal tumor was a high-grade leiomyosarcoma. Despite the multimodal therapeutic approach, the patient died within 11 months.
CONCLUSION: The vagina is a rare site of presentation of primary MMMTs and the present case is the secon

Squamous cell cancer is the most common neoplasm of the oesophagus worldwide, with an enormous variation in its global incidence. Several risk factors, such as achalasia, Plummer-Vinson syndrome, coeliac disease and nutritional factors, have been identified. The surveillance of patients, especially those with tylosis or caustic ingestion, has been recommended. Vital staining with iodine may improve the diagnosis of early cancer. The endoscopic management of early cancer and dysplasia by minimal invasive techniques such as photodynamic therapy or mucosal resection has become attractive for many

To test and optimize photodynamic therapy of early cancers in the upper aero-digestive tract and oesophagus, we sought an appropriate animal model, which was found in the 7,12-dimethylbenz[a]anthracene-induced early squamous cell carcinoma in the Golden Syrian hamster. This chemically induced neoplasm is shown, by histology and immunohistochemistry, to pass through similar stages of early cancer development as its human counterpart. Its time sequence is highly reproducible, leading to a well differentiated carcinoma in situ and microinvasive carcinoma in the hamster cheek pouch over a period o

BACKGROUND: Salivary gland lesions possess diagnostic challenges on fine-needle aspiration (FNA) material. They are relatively uncommon, yet present with a wide spectrum of cytomorphology. Herein, we review common salivary gland neoplasms, their cytomorphologic features, their diagnostic pitfalls, and ancillary studies helpful in achieving an accurate diagnosis.
SUMMARY: There are many cytomorphologic overlaps between benign and malignant salivary gland entities. Moreover, metaplasia, cystic changes, and degenerative changes are common findings adding to diagnostic dilemmas. These complicatin

Hyalinizing clear cell carcinoma (HCCC) is a rare malignancy of the minor salivary glands, most often managed by surgical resection. We report a case of a 63-year-old woman with an unresectable base-of-tongue tumor initially presumed to be squamous cell carcinoma. Histopathologic evaluation and molecular testing ultimately confirmed HCCC with an EWSR1-ATF1 fusion. Given the tumor's extent, she was treated with definitive chemoradiation using weekly cisplatin and 70 Gy in 35 fractions. Her course was complicated by pulmonary embolism, neutropenia, and severe mucositis requiring percutaneous end

Five cases of non-neuronal granular cell tumours of the oral cavity are documented in the literature. Additionally, one case of a non-neuronal granular cell tumour with features of malignancy was described. A malignant granular cell tumour is a rare neoplasm and counterpart of a benign granular cell tumour. The cell of origin of the granular cell tumour was reported from the Schwann cell. Some granular cells originated from non-neural components and were negative for immunohistochemistry S100. Immunohistochemistry is required to confirm further and categorize ulcero-proliferative and erythemat

Elucidation of tumor-DNA virus associations in many cancer types has enhanced our knowledge of fundamental oncogenesis mechanisms and provided a basis for cancer prevention initiatives. RNA-Seq is a novel tool to comprehensively assess such associations. We interrogated RNA-Seq data from 3,775 malignant neoplasms in The Cancer Genome Atlas database for the presence of viral sequences. Viral integration sites were also detected in expressed transcripts using a novel approach. The detection capacity of RNA-Seq was compared to available clinical laboratory data. Human papillomavirus (HPV) transcr

Pleomorphic neoplasms are typically associated with high-grade malignant behavior, but this does not readily apply to primary cutaneous tumors. Despite morphologic features suggestive of malignancy, atypical fibroxanthoma, the classic example of a pleomorphic dermal neoplasm, is characterized by indolent clinical behavior. Atypical fibroxanthoma is a distinctive clinicopathologic disease affecting sun-damaged skin of elderly males. Histologically, it is often ulcerated and dermal based with pushing growth, characterized by a sheet-like and fascicular growth of pleomorphic epithelioid, spindled

BACKGROUND: Xeroderma pigmentosum (XP) is an autosomal recessive disorder characterized by a defect in DNA repair and subsequent increased frequency of cutaneous malignant neoplasms, including melanoma. In patients with XP, patient and family education and aggressive UV radiation protection are the primary means of skin cancer prevention. An important secondary measure in decreasing morbidity and mortality in these patients involves early detection of skin cancers, particularly melanomas.
OBSERVATIONS: We describe a 39-year-old woman with XP who developed 38 primary melanomas along with 6 squ

14-3-3 sigma is an exclusive epithelial marker and data on its expression in different malignancies are very scarce. The aims of the present study are to screen its expression in the most common neoplasms occurring in the urological and gynecological tract and to evaluate its use as a diagnostic marker. A tissue microarray was constructed using 350 samples from 13 different neoplasms. Immunohistochemical analysis using a polyclonal 14-3-3 sigma antibody was performed. Overall, this protein was positive in 141 and negative in 209 tumors. The most frequent expression was seen in squamous cell ca

Thyroid transcription factor-1 (TTF-1) is a tissue-specific transcription factor expressed in the thyroid and lung. The clinical utility and limitation of TTF-1 in primary or metastatic carcinomas of the lung have not been previously studied in detail. We examined TTF-1 expression in 510 primary lung and 107 metastatic neoplasms. TTF-1 was detectable in 4/99 (4%) squamous cell carcinomas, 169/176 (96%) solitary adenocarcinomas, 34/34 (100%) multifocal adenocarcinomas, 1/1 (100%) signet ring cell carcinoma, 16/20 (80%) mucinous adenocarcinomas, 23/23 (100%) nonmucinous bronchioloalveolar carcin

PURPOSE: Surface tumors of the eye comprise an ample spectrum of diseases with various clinical manifestations. Diagnosis has been traditionally achieved through core biopsies, but cytology is an innovative, fast, and minimally invasive method. The objective of this study was to investigate the use of exfoliative cytology as an alternative method for the detection of ocular surface squamous neoplasm (OSSN).
METHODS: Exfoliative cytology of the lesions was performed by collecting smears using plastic brushes followed by smearing the cells onto slides and subsequently fixing them in 90% alcohol
