Interdisciplinary expert team statement on the treatment of multi-bed atherosclerotic disease - endorsed by Polish Cardiac Society, Polish Lipid Association, Polish Society of Diabetology, Polish Neurological Society, Polish Society of Nephrology.

Atherosclerosis is a systemic disease which involves not only the coronary vessels but also occurs in other vascular beds (e.g., cervical, cerebral, and peripheral vessels), increasing cardiovascular risk. One of the causes of atherosclerosis is lipid disorders. In addition, other diseases, such as diabetes, chronic kidney disease, or familial hypercholesterolemia, accelerate the development of multi-bed (multilevel) atherosclerosis. Such patients are often treated by physicians of various specialties, and in our country there is no integrated system for managing these patients and their furth

Thromboembolic prophylaxis in kidney failure patients with atrial fibrillation undergoing hemodialysis: from risk stratification to decision making on anticoagulants or left atrial appendage closure. A position paper endorsed by the Italian Society of Nephrology.

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is highly prevalent in patients with kidney failure (KF) who are undergoing hemodialysis (HD). All patients with AF and a thromboembolic risk score (CHA2DS2-VA) of two or more should be prescribed oral anticoagulant therapy (OAC), according to cardiology guidelines. However, there are no randomized controlled trials (RCTs) demonstrating that OAC protects against thromboembolic events in HD patients. Furthermore, evidence from observational studies is insufficient to demonstrate the benefits of OAC for preventing thromboembolism in HD patients with AF. Instead, it sugge

[Italian Society of Cardiology-Italian Society of Nephrology Consensus document: The cardio-renal interaction in the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases - Part II: From preventive strategies to treatment of patients with cardio-renal damage].

Chronic kidney disease and cardiovascular disease are strictly connected each other with a bidirectional interaction. Thus, the prevention of cardio-renal damage, as its appropriate treatment, are essential steps for a correct management of long-term patients' prognosis. Several preventive and therapeutic strategies, pharmacological and not, are now available for cardio-renal damage prevention and treatment, and for the management of its complications. The second part of this consensus document focuses on the management and treatment of cardio-renal damage, directing the attention on the corre

[Diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis in patients with chronic kidney disease : Joint guidelines of the Austrian Society for Bone and Mineral Research (ÖGKM), the Austrian Society of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine (ÖGPMR) and the Austrian Society of Nephrology (ÖGN)].

DEFINITION AND EPIDEMIOLOGY: Chronic kidney disease (CKD): abnormalities of kidney structure or function, present for over 3 months. Staging of CKD is based on GFR and albuminuria (not graded). Osteoporosis: compromised bone strength (low bone mass, disturbance of microarchitecture) predisposing to fracture. By definition, osteoporosis is diagnosed if the bone mineral density T‑score is ≤ -2.5. Furthermore, osteoporosis is diagnosed if a low-trauma (inadequate trauma) fracture occurs, irrespective of the measured T‑score (not graded). The prevalence of osteoporosis, osteoporotic fractures and

Acute Kidney Injury and Special Considerations during Renal Replacement Therapy in Children with Coronavirus Disease-19: Perspective from the Critical Care Nephrology Section of the European Society of Paediatric and Neonatal Intensive Care.

Children seem to be less severely affected by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) as compared to adults. Little is known about the prevalence and pathogenesis of acute kidney injury (AKI) in children affected by SARS-CoV-2. Dehydration seems to be the most common trigger factor, and meticulous attention to fluid status is imperative. The principles of initiation, prescription, and complications related to renal replacement therapy are the same for coronavirus disease (COVID) patients as for non-COVID patients. Continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) remains the mos

Working Together to Promote Kidney Health.

The American Nephrology Nurses Association (ANNA) and American Society of Nephrology (ASN) have joined forces with the goal of advancing improvements in kidney care through transformative change. Through the integration of expertise, resources, and networks from both organizations, these collaborations have the potential to improve patient outcomes, advance clinical practice, and shape policy initiatives. In this article, we describe our focus on three areas: strengthening the nephrology and nephrology nursing workforce, championing health care equity, and advocating for kidney health.

Evidence of the syndrome of rapid onset end-stage renal disease (SORO-ESRD) in the acute kidney injury (AKI) literature--preventable causes of AKI and SORO-ESRD--a call for re-engineering of nephrology practice paradigms.

INTRODUCTION: We described the previously unrecognized syndrome of rapid-onset end-stage renal disease (SORO-ESRD) in 2010, in the journal Renal Failure, as distinct from the classic CKD-ESRD progression of a methodical, linear, time-dependent and predictable progression from CKD through CKD stages I-V, ending in ESRD requiring renal replacement therapy (RRT). It remains unclear to what extent this syndrome may have been identified in the past without acknowledging its uniqueness. METHODS: We reviewed AKI reports and ascertained cases of SORO-ESRD as defined by patients with a priori stable k

Invited manuscript poster on renal-related education American Society of Nephrology, Nov. 16-21, 2010. Adolescents with chronic kidney disease and their need for online peer mentoring: a qualitative investigation of social support and healthcare transition.

Adolescents with chronic kidney disease (CKD) tend to be isolated from peers who also have CKD, develop non-adherent behavior with treatment recommendations, and consequently are at higher risk for poor health outcomes such as transplant rejection. At the same time, patients in this age group tend to be technologically savvy and well-versed in using Internet-based communication tools to connect with other people. In this study, we conducted semi-structured interviews among adolescents with CKD to assess their information needs and their interest in using a CKD-oriented peer-mentoring website t

Nephrologist follow-up improves outcomes after hospitalization with acute kidney injury.

INTRODUCTION: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a common medical condition for patients during hospitalization and is associated with long-term sequelae. The incidence of AKI is increasing, whereas in-hospital mortality from the condition is decreasing. We compared outcomes following discharge in patients with AKI between those who received follow-up with nephrologists and those who only received routine follow-up (i.e., follow-up not at the nephrology department). MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective cohort study identified 66,859 AKI survivors with discharge eGFR values of less than 60 mL/m…
