Microwave-assisted synthesis of hydroxyphenyl nitrones with protective action against oxidative stress.

Oxidative stress plays an important role in neuronal death in neurodegenerative disorders such as Parkinson's disease (PD). Hydroxyphenyl nitrones, derivatives of the nitrone spin trap alpha-phenyl-N-tert-butylnitrone (PBN), were synthesized and their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective activity in neural cells evaluated. These hydroxyphenyl nitrones 5-7 were synthesized by reaction of the corresponding hydroxybenzaldehyde with N-tert-butyl hydroxylamine under microwave irradiation. They showed good peroxyl free radical scavenger capacities, analyzed by oxygen radical absorbance

MRI images at a 45-degree angle through the cervical neural foramina: a technique for improved visualization.

BACKGROUND: Traditional MRI imaging of the cervical neural foramina (NF) generally utilizes sagittal and axial views to delineate pathology. These views may not fully delineate NF pathology. Enhanced imaging and visualization of this area would benefit all interventionalists. The spinal interventionalist, in particular, routinely utilizes approximately a 45-degree fluoroscopic en face view for placement of needles for a cervical transforaminal epidural. The interventionalist relies on axial MRI views to identify NF pathology that can be conceptually more difficult to analyze. Routine 45-degree

Brain pathology and strabismus.

If we consider the complex and articulate organization of the oculomotor neural system, ie, infranuclear, nuclear, internuclear, and supranuclear levels, how many neuronal structures are implicated and their widespread localization in the central nervous system, and if we understand the various relationships within the oculomotor system and with other cerebral structures, we may easily realize that cerebral diseases and oculomotor disturbances are tightly and reciprocally connected. Many diseases may be associated with ocular movement impairment, sometimes acting on different sites of oculomot

The splotch-delayed (Spd) mouse mutant carries a point mutation within the paired box of the Pax-3 gene.

The splotch (Sp) mouse mutant displays defects in neural crest cell migration and neural tube closure and serves as a model for the study of spina bifida, exencephaly, and Waardenburg syndrome type I in humans. Recently, we have described alterations in the Pax-3 gene for the radiation-induced Spr and Sp2H alleles and for the original, spontaneously arising Sp allele. Another allele that arose spontaneously at the Sp locus, termed splotch-delayed (Spd), shows a less severe phenotype than the other Sp alleles, including the delayed death of homozygous embryos. To determine the molecular basis u

Degenerative lumbar spondylolisthesis. Part I: Etiology, pathogenesis, pathomorphology, and clinical features.

The authors analyze the clinical features and the results of various imaging studies in 77 patients with degenerative lumbar spondylolisthesis. The most commonly olisthetic vertebra was L-4, followed by L-3. The extent of the olisthesis ranged from 8-43%. Forty-two percent of the patients with L-3 or L-4 olisthesis had reduced mobility of the underlying vertebra. Five different clinical pictures were present: no symptoms except occasional low back pain; chronic low back pain with no radicular symptoms; radicular symptoms and no signs of nerve root compression, with or without low back pain; ra

Prelinguistic vocalizations of hearing-impaired and normally hearing subjects: a comparison of consonantal inventories.

Phonetic transcriptions of 48 babbling samples from 11 normally hearing subjects, aged 4-18 months, and 39 samples from 14 hearing-impaired (HI) subjects, aged 4-39 months, were analyzed to determine the inventory of consonantal phones for each recording session. Group comparisons revealed that inventories of the hearing-impaired subjects were generally smaller than those of the hearing infants and that they evidenced little change in size prior to 20 months. Analysis of place and manner of articulation of supraglottal phones in the inventories showed that, compared with inventories of the nor

Systematic classification and comparison of maternal and obstetrical complications following 2 different methods of fetal surgery for the repair of open neural tube defects.

BACKGROUND: In utero repair of open neural tube defects using an open hysterotomy approach (hereafter referred to as "open") has been shown to reduce the need for ventriculoperitoneal shunting and to improve motor outcomes for affected infants. Laparotomy-assisted fetoscopic repair (hereafter referred to as "hybrid") is an alternative approach that may confer similar neurologic benefits while reducing the incidence of hysterotomy-related complications. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to analyze procedure-related maternal and fetal complications of in utero repair using the Clavien-Dindo classific

Functional data analysis of single-trial auditory evoked potentials recorded in the awake rat.

Evoked potentials (EPs) reflect neural processing and are widely used to study sensory perception. However, methods of analyzing EP have been limited mostly to the conventional ensemble averaging of EP response trials to a repeated stimulus, and less so to single-trials analysis. Here we applied a new approach - functional data analysis (FDA) - to study auditory EP in the rat model of tinnitus, in which overdoses of salicylate (SS) are known to alter sound perception characteristically, as the same way as in humans. Single-trial auditory EPs were analyzed, after being collected on a daily basi

Power wheelchair driving analysis for people with motor disabilities using ANN classification.

The present paper aims primarily to analyze the driving skills of patients with different pathologies using artificial neural networks. The evaluation of these patients' abilities to drive an electric wheelchair or power wheelchair shows that this battery-operated device can be dangerous for them when they present severe motor deficiencies. It is for this reason that it was deemed necessary to use a Power Wheelchair (PW) driving simulator in order to analyze, in an objective manner, their driving abilities. Consequently, an experimental study was carried out using the driving simulator at the

Evaluating the predictive value of multimodal intraoperative neuromonitoring in anterior cervical discectomy and fusion: a retrospective cohort study on 442 patients.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) is a widely regarded surgical technique for the management of cervical disc herniation (CDH) and myelopathy, offering significant therapeutic efficacy. However, the potential for neurological complications persists, underscoring the need for strategies to enhance procedural safety. Multimodal intraoperative neuromonitoring (IONM) has emerged as a promising adjunct, providing real-time assessment of neural integrity to identify and address intraoperative compromise. This study seeks to rigorously assess the diagnostic acc

Fault-tolerant synchronization of quaternion-valued BAM neural networks with time-varying delay subject to multiple-actuator failure.

The synchronization of quaternion-valued bidirectional associative memory neural networks (QVBAMNNs) subject to actuator faults is studied in this work. A fault-tolerant control approach is suggested by considering both actuator effectiveness loss and bias faults, which are rarely addressed simultaneously. A mathematical fault model is formulated to characterize the influence of actuator failures on the control inputs. Under this framework, suitable guidelines are established to guarantee global exponential, fixed-time, finite-time, and predefined-time synchronization. In addition, the corresp

Dysregulation of mTOR Signaling after Brain Ischemia.

In this review, we provide recent data on the role of mTOR kinase in the brain under physiological conditions and after damage, with a particular focus on cerebral ischemia. We cover the upstream and downstream pathways that regulate the activation state of mTOR complexes. Furthermore, we summarize recent advances in our understanding of mTORC1 and mTORC2 status in ischemia-hypoxia at tissue and cellular levels and analyze the existing evidence related to two types of neural cells, namely glia and neurons. Finally, we discuss the potential use of mTORC1 and mTORC2 as therapeutic targets after

See-through Brains and Diffusion Tensor MRI Clarified Fiber Connections: A Preliminary Microstructural Study in a Mouse with Callosal Agenesis.

Clearing methods that render the brain optically transparent allow high-resolution three-dimensional (3D) imaging of neural networks. We used diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and two-photon imaging of cleared brains to analyze white matter in BTBR mice. We confirmed corpus callosum agenesis and identified an abnormal commissure close to the third ventricle. DTI and cleared-brain two-photon imaging revealed that these commissural fibers constituted a frontal clustering of the ventral hippocampal commissure and provided a detailed assessment of white matter structure in mice.

Whole-Transcriptome Analysis of Serum L1CAM-Captured Extracellular Vesicles Reveals Neural and Glycosylation Changes in Autism Spectrum Disorder.

The pathophysiology of autistic spectrum disorder (ASD) is not fully understood and there are no diagnostic or predictive biomarkers. Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are cell-derived nano-sized vesicles, carrying nucleic acids, proteins, lipids, and other bioactive substances. As reported, serum neural cell adhesion molecule L1 (L1CAM)-captured EVs (LCEVs) can provide reliable biomarkers for neurological diseases; however, little is known about the LCEVs in children with ASD. The study enrolled 100 children with ASD (2.5-6 years of age; 90 males) and 60 age-matched TD children (54 males) as contr

Neural mechanisms of pain processing differ between endurance athletes and nonathletes: A functional connectivity magnetic resonance imaging study.

Pain perception and the ability to modulate arising pain vary tremendously between individuals. It has been shown that endurance athletes possess higher pain tolerance thresholds and a greater effect of conditioned pain modulation than nonathletes, both indicating a more efficient system of endogenous pain inhibition. The aim of the present study was to focus on the neural mechanisms of pain processing in endurance athletes that have not been investigated yet. Therefore, we analyzed the pain processing of 18 male athletes and 19 healthy male nonathletes using functional magnetic resonance imag

Controllable forces for reproducible chronic constriction injury mimicking compressive neuropathy in rat sciatic nerve.

BACKGROUND: Compressive neuropathy is a recurring and challenging disease for patients, regardless of medical or surgical treatment. Neuropathological severity is associated with the force of mechanical compression. Available animal models do not address mechanical issues with reproducible outcomes. We used a chronic constriction injury model to analyze tension-controlled compressive neuropathy and achieve reproducible functional outcomes. NEW METHOD: We refined a modified animal model for chronic constriction nerve injury under controllable compressive tensile strength to target the unilater

Respiratory phase shapes brain-heart dynamics: evidence from recurrence analysis of EEG band power and heart rate.

INTRODUCTION: Respiration is increasingly recognized as a key modulator of brain-body interactions, influencing both neural and autonomic dynamics. While prior work has demonstrated respiratory-driven entrainment, it remains unclear whether distinct phases of the breathing cycle give rise to different dynamical regimes of cortical activity. METHODS: In this study, we investigated respiratory-phase-dependent modulation of brain-heart interactions during controlled breathing, focusing on breath-hold periods following inhalation and exhalation. EEG band power time series and heart rate (HR) were
