PURPOSE: Digital subtraction angiography (DSA) offers a real-time approach to locating lower gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding. However, many sources of bleeding are not easily visible on angiograms. This investigation aims to develop a machine learning tool that can locate GI bleeding on DSA prior to transarterial embolization.
METHODS: All mesenteric artery angiograms and arterial embolization DSA images obtained in the interventional radiology department between January 1, 2007, and December 31, 2021, were analyzed. These images were acquired using fluoroscopy imaging systems (Siemens Healthi

In this paper, machine learning methods based on artificial intelligence theory are applied to the computer-aided decision making of some otoneurological diseases, for example Ménière's disease. Three methods explored are decision trees, genetic algorithms and neural networks. By using such a machine learning method, the decision-making program is trained with a representative training set of cases and tested with another set. The machine learning methods are useful also for our otoneurological expert system, One, which is based on a pattern recognition approach. The methods are able to differ

Building on recent insights that augmenting reinforcement-learning policies with disturbance estimates improves robustness and sim-to-real transfer, this paper proposes a disturbance-aware actor-critic RL framework for high-precision robotic manipulators. We derive the dynamics of manipulators ranging from two to six degrees of freedom and design a nonlinear disturbance observer that provides real-time estimates of lumped uncertainties. Unlike conventional feedforward-only designs, the proposed DACRL framework deeply integrates DOB information into the actor-critic's learning state, cost funct

Complex behaviors are built by combining simpler cognitive components. Computational modeling has shown that artificial neural networks can perform a variety of tasks by flexibly combining functional modules, each specialized for a specific computation, to construct a complex task. However, it is unknown whether reusable modular networks are found in the brain. Here we show that mice performing a delayed match-to-sample with delayed report task reuse neuronal subspaces that were specialized for stimulus processing and memory maintenance. These subspaces were reused during the task to represent

BACKGROUND: Electrospun nanocomposite biomaterials are promising candidates for blood-contacting medical devices owing to their high surface area, tunable nanoscale morphology, and biomimetic replication of the native extracellular matrix. However, conventional hemocompatibility assessments rely heavily on biological assays. These methods require blood samples, specialized reagents, and consumables, thereby inherently increasing costs, resource demands, and laboratory waste. To mitigate these limitations, sustainable evaluation strategies that leverage physicochemical features are highly desir

PURPOSE: Sex classification is a major benchmark of previous work in learning on the structural connectome, a naturally occurring brain graph that has proven useful for studying cognitive function and impairment. While graph neural networks (GNNs), specifically graph convolutional networks (GCNs), have gained popularity lately for their effectiveness in learning on graph data, achieving strong performance in adult sex classification tasks, their application to pediatric populations remains unexplored. We seek to characterize the capacity for GNN models to learn connectomic patterns on pediatri

Parkinson's disease (PD) is the second-most common neurodegenerative disease. With more than 20,000 new diagnosed cases each year, PD affects millions of individuals worldwide and is most prevalent in the elderly population. The current clinical methods for the diagnosis and severity assessment of PD rely on the visual and physical examination of subjects and identifying key disease motor signs and symptoms such as bradykinesia, rigidity, tremor, and postural instability. In the present study, we developed a method for the diagnosis and severity assessment of PD using Gramian Angular Fields (G

The risk prediction of Alzheimer's disease (AD) is crucial for its early prevention and treatment. However, current risk prediction methods face challenges in effectively extracting and fusing multiomics features, particularly overlooking the multilevel evolutionary mechanisms of AD. This article combines biomedical large foundation models with the conditional generative adversarial network (GAN) to mine the evolutionary patterns of AD by considering the regulatory effect of genes on brain lesions. Specifically, we first use biomedical large foundation models to effectively construct high-qual

Recent advances in synthetic biology have enabled the construction of molecular circuits that operate across multiple scales of cellular organization, such as gene regulation, signaling pathways, and cellular metabolism. Computational optimization can effectively aid the design process, but current methods are generally unsuited for systems with multiple temporal or concentration scales, as these are slow to simulate due to their numerical stiffness. Here, we present a machine learning method for the efficient optimization of biological circuits across scales. The method relies on Bayesian opt

Inverse problems in image processing, phase imaging, and computer vision often share the same structure of mapping input image(s) to output image(s) but are usually solved by different application-specific algorithms. Deep convolutional neural networks have shown great potential for highly variable tasks across many image-based domains, but sometimes can be challenging to train due to their internal non-linearity. We propose a novel, fast-converging neural network architecture capable of solving generic image(s)-to-image(s) inverse problems relevant to a diverse set of domains. We show this ap

The study introduces a new online spike encoding algorithm for spiking neural networks (SNN) and suggests new methods for learning and identifying diagnostic biomarkers using three prominent deep learning neural network models: deep BiLSTM, reservoir SNN, and NeuCube. EEG data from datasets related to epilepsy, migraine, and healthy subjects are employed. Results reveal that BiLSTM hidden neurons capture biological significance, while reservoir SNN activities and NeuCube spiking dynamics identify EEG channels as diagnostic biomarkers. BiLSTM and reservoir SNN achieve 90 and 85% classification

Precision nutrition on a global scale necessitates an understanding of food not as static collections of so-called macronutrients but rather as dynamic and heterogeneous biochemical matrices. These complex non-linear interactions between food composition, gastrointestinal digestion and the human microbiome are difficult to capture using traditional empirical experimental methods. This review articulates a paradigm-based framework that reconceptualizes artificial intelligence (AI) in food and function science, from generic industrial applications to the computational modeling of physiological a

In dermatology, deep learning may be applied for skin lesion classification. However, for a given input image, a neural network only outputs a label, obtained using the class probabilities, which do not model uncertainty. Our group developed a novel method to quantify uncertainty in stochastic neural networks. In this study, we aimed to train such network for skin lesion classification and evaluate its diagnostic performance and uncertainty, and compare the results to the assessments by a group of dermatologists. By passing duplicates of an image through such a stochastic neural network, we ob

Objective.Motor decoding is crucial to translate the neural activity for brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) and provides information on how motor states are encoded in the brain. Deep neural networks (DNNs) are emerging as promising neural decoders. Nevertheless, it is still unclear how different DNNs perform in different motor decoding problems and scenarios, and which network could be a good candidate for invasive BCIs.Approach.Fully-connected, convolutional, and recurrent neural networks (FCNNs, CNNs, RNNs) were designed and applied to decode motor states from neurons recorded from V6A area i
