Monitoring healing of acute Charcot's arthropathy with infrared dermal thermometry.

The purpose of this study was to describe the use of skin temperature assessment in diabetics with acute Charcot's arthropathy to monitor resolution of inflammation longitudinally throughout the course of treatment and to predict development of neuropathic ulcers. Thirty-nine diabetic subjects presenting with acute Charcot's arthropathy received thermometric monitoring throughout their treatment course. Subjects were treated with a standard protocol involving total contact casting, removable cast walkers, and progression to therapeutic shoes. There was a steady decrease in temperatures during

Evaluation of substance P and bradykinin levels in nasal secretions of patients with nasal polyposis with and without sensitivity to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.

OBJECTIVE: The role of neurogenic inflammation in pathogenesis of chronic rhinitis is well known. However, very little is known about its importance in pathogenesis of nasal polyposis (NP), especially in form of NP which appears as a part of aspirin-exacerbated respiratory disease (AERD). The aim of this study was to examine the concentrations of neuropeptides substance P (SP) and bradykinin (BK) in nasal secretions of patients with NP. METHODS: Fourteen patients with NP as a part of AERD with mild persistent asthma, 14 patients with NP without aspirin sensitivity, and 14 control subjects wit…

Neuropathological studies on the toxic syndrome related to adulterated rapeseed oil in Spain.

Biopsies of muscle and sural nerves, and autopsies of patients affected by the toxic and neuromuscular syndrome produced by ingestion of adulterated rapeseed oil were studied using morphological, histochemical and ultrastructural methods. In muscle, two pathological pictures were distinguished according to their temporal sequence. In the early phase, the neuromuscular syndrome was characterized by myalgia and an inflammatory infiltration of the perimysium, the capsules of muscle spindles and intramuscular nerves. The muscle fibres exhibited small subsarcolemmal zones of fibril disintegration a

An Innovative Sprayable Mg-MOF Hydrogel Enhances Healing of Chronic Wounds with Multifaceted Pathologies in a Porcine Model.

Chronic wounds are characterized by unsatisfactory clinical outcomes due to persistent inflammation, excessive oxidative stress, and impaired neurovascular function, which conventional dressings cannot adequately address. This study presents a promising strategy for sequentially reversing these multifactorial wound conditions. We engineered a sprayable Mg-ZIF-8@TP@Alg hydrogel by integrating a Mg-Zn bimetallic metal-organic framework (Mg-ZIF-8) with tea polyphenol (TP), achieving differential release and pH-responsive therapeutic kinetics. In vitro assays demonstrated that Mg-ZIF-8@TP exerted

Neuroprotection After Intracerebral Hemorrhage: Apoptosis, Neurogenesis, and Prospects of Stem Cell Therapy.

This comprehensive review examines the interconnected roles of apoptosis, neurogenesis, and stem cell therapy in neuroprotection and neurorestoration following intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH). We emphasize that these processes should be interpreted within a unified secondary injury cascade rather than as independent topics. Following ICH, hematoma toxicity, erythrocyte lysis, iron overload, oxidative stress, inflammation, blood-brain barrier disruption, and perihematomal edema interact to activate multiple regulated cell death pathways. Apoptosis remains important, but ferroptosis and other inf

Obesity in chronic spinal cord injury is associated with poorer body composition and increased risk of cardiometabolic disease.

With increased longevity after spinal cord injury (SCI), cardiovascular disease has emerged as a major cause of morbidity and mortality. We evaluate the association of body composition and injury level with cardiometabolic disease (CMD) risk factors. Sixty-two individuals (69% male, 31% female) with chronic SCI (mean duration 7.4, SD ± 5.8 years) were recruited. Mean age of participants was 34.4 ± 12.1 years with BMI of 23.8 ± 5, while 64% had BMI < 25 and 11% >30. Total and percent truncal fat correlated positively (p < 0.05) with serum triglycerides, non-high-density lipid cholesterol, c-rea

Reduction of Oxidative Stress and Excitotoxicity by Mesenchymal Stem Cell Biomimetic Co-Delivery System for Cerebral Ischemia-Reperfusion Injury Treatment.

A cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury is ensued by an intricate interplay between various pathological processes including excitotoxicity, oxidative stress, inflammation, and apoptosis. For a long time, drug intervention policies targeting a single signaling pathway have failed to achieve the anticipated clinical efficacy in the intricate and dynamic inflammatory environment of the brain. Moreover, inadequate targeted drug delivery remains a significant challenge in cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury therapy. In this study, a multifunctional nanoplatform (designated as PB-006@MSC) is develo

Inflammation and Barrier Function Deficits in the Bladder Urothelium of Patients with Chronic Spinal Cord Injury and Recurrent Urinary Tract Infections.

Patients with spinal cord injury (SCI) commonly experience neurogenic voiding dysfunctions and urinary tract complications, including recurrent urinary tract infections (rUTI). The bladder mucosa barrier function contributes to UTI prevention. This study investigated changes in bladder urothelium protein expression in patients with SCI and rUTI. From June 2011 to November 2017, 23 patients (19 men and 4 women) with chronic SCI were enrolled (mean age: 43 years. Bladder tissues from 6 healthy adults served as the normal control group. Biopsy samples (9 partial cystectomies and 14 bladder biopsi

Engineering CXCL12 Biomimetic Decoy-Integrated Versatile Immunosuppressive Nanoparticle for Ischemic Stroke Therapy with Management of Overactivated Brain Immune Microenvironment.

Following ischemic stroke, brain-resident activated microglia and peripherally infiltrated inflammatory cells create a complicated and overactivated brain immune microenvironment, which causes neuron death and dramatically hinders neurological functional recovery. Herein, an engineering CXCL12 biomimetic decoy-integrated versatile immunosuppressive nanoparticle (VIN) for management of the overactivated brain immune microenvironment is reported. The shell of VIN (membrane of CXCR4 overexpressed mesenchymal stem cells), can not only improve the homing of nanoparticles to the cerebral ischemic le

Transient receptor potential vanilloid type 4 channels mediate Na-K-Cl-co-transporter-induced brain edema after traumatic brain injury.

Na+ -K+ -2Cl- co-transporter (NKCC1) plays an important role in traumatic brain injury (TBI)-induced brain edema via the MAPK cascade. The transient receptor potential vanilloid type 4 (TRPV4) channel participates in neurogenic inflammation, pain transmission, and edema. In this study, we investigated the relationship between NKCC1 and TRPV4 and the related signaling pathways in TBI-induced brain edema and neuronal damage. TBI was induced by the calibrated weight-drop device. Adult male Wistar rats were randomly assigned into sham and experimental groups for time-course studies of TRPV4 expres…

[Encephalomyelitis caused by enterovirus type 71 in children].

Enterovirus type 71 (EV71) is a causative agent of large outbreaks of hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) in Europe (Bulgaria, 1975; Hungary, 1978) and South-East Asia (Malaysia, 1977; Taiwan, 1998; Singapore, 2000-2007; People's Republic of China, 2007-2009). HFMD afflicted children less than 10 years of age and resulted in recovery within 3-7 days. In a small percentage of infants (aged 6 months to 3 years), HFMD was accompanied by acute neurological complications, such as serous meningitis, poliomyelitis-like syndrome (extremity pareses and muscle paralyses); brain stem encephalitis (myocl

Spinal cord injury-induced overflow incontinence reshapes the activin-follistatin-inhibin axis in mouse bladder and kidney.

BACKGROUND: Spinal cord injury is a leading cause of neurogenic bladder and upper urinary tract deterioration, yet the molecular remodeling of epithelial-stromal signaling axes in this context remains incompletely defined. The activin-follistatin-inhibin axis, a branch of the transforming growth factor-β superfamily, has been implicated in tissue repair, inflammation, and fibrosis, but its behavior in the lower urinary tract after SCI is unknown. METHODS: A standardized T9-T10 contusion SCI model was established in male C57BL/6J mice. Bladder dysfunction was assessed using the voiding spot as

A pilot study of nitric oxide blood levels in patients with chronic orofacial pain.

BACKGROUND: Control of pain is the major goal in the management of chronic orofacial pain (COP) patients. The pathogenesis of COP is currently not well understood. Consequently, the treatment of COP may be suboptimal or even harmful. Based on independent observations, we propose that local elevated levels of nitric oxide (NO) may have a central role in the pathogenesis of COP. HYPOTHESIS: NO level in the orofacial region of COP patients is elevated. A regional increased level of NO causes excessive vasodilatation. This hyperperfusion is manifested by hyperthermia of the overlying skin, while

Herpes zoster post-herpetic neuralgia.

Post-herpetic neuralgia (PHN) is the most frequent complication of herpes zoster and often results in significant morbidity and a reduction in the patient's quality of life. The peripheral nerve injury that occurs during the acute phase of herpes zoster (HZ) leads to an abnormal tonic impulse discharge from primary nociceptive afferent neurons which induce slow temporal summation. This "wind-up" phenomenon is responsible for continuous partial depolarisation of second-order neurons with increased spontaneous impulse discharge and expanded receptive fields within the dorsal horn nociceptive neu
