Cancer Patient Advocacy in the Postoperative Intensive Care Unit: The Experience of Nurses and the Voice of Older Adult Patients.

Background/Objectives: Older adults with cancer in the postoperative environment face complex vulnerability, exacerbated by the frailty of ageing and the aggressiveness of surgical treatment. In this highly demanding context, nurses play a crucial role as patient advocates. However, there is a knowledge gap regarding how advocacy is perceived and experienced by the nurse-patient dyad. This qualitative study aims to explain the practice of advocacy by comparing the perspectives of nurses and patients in order to construct part of a substantive theory on the subject. Methods: The Grounded Theory

Recovery approach to the care of people with dementia: decision making and 'best interests' concerns.

The concept of 'recovery' has been central to the discussion of the care of people with mental health problems in recent years, in this paper these ideas will be applied to the care of people with dementia in an attempt to focus nursing practice on the notion that it is possible to involve this group of patients in their own decision-making processes. It is acknowledged that this is not always possible without support and advocacy by nurses and other carers who must take on board the need to arrive at solutions to problems or change that are in the person's best interests. ED Triage Decision-Making With Mental Health Presentations: A "Think Aloud" Study.

INTRODUCTION: Triage is the process whereby persons presenting to the emergency department are quickly assessed by a nurse and their need for care and service is prioritized. Research examining the care of persons presenting to emergency departments with psychiatric and mental health problems has shown that triage has often been cited as the most problematic aspect of the encounter. Three questions guided this investigation: Where do the decisions that triage nurses make fall on the intuitive versus analytic dimensions of decision making for mental health presentations in the emergency departm

Validating Signs and Symptoms From An Actual Mass Casualty Incident to Characterize An Irritant Gas Syndrome Agent (IGSA) Exposure: A First Step in The Development of a Novel IGSA Triage Algorithm.

CONTRIBUTION TO EMERGENCY NURSING PRACTICE: • Chemical exposures daily pose a significant threat to life. Rapid assessment by first responders/emergency nurses is required to reduce death and disability. Currently, no informatics tools for Irritant Gas Syndrome Agents (IGSA) exposures exist to process victims efficiently, continuously monitor for latent signs/symptoms, or make triage recommendations. • This study uses actual patient data from a chemical incident to characterize and validate signs/symptoms of an IGSA Syndrome. Validating signs/symptoms is the first step in developing new emerge

The future of cancer nursing in Europe: Addressing professional issues in education, research, policy and practice.

Cancer nursing has evolved to meet the demands of rising cancer incidence, newer and more complex treatment options, and the emergence of specialist roles supporting patients from pre-diagnosis, through treatment, survivorship and end of life care. Nurses are involved in direct and in-direct care of people at risk of, and living with and after cancer in diverse contexts. As a result, nurses are positioned to have a significant influence on the processes and outcomes of cancer care, through education, research, policy, practice and leadership. However, nursing and cancer care face challenges, a

Assessing Nursing and Pediatric Resident Understanding of Delirium in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.

Delirium is a common disease process in the pediatric critical care unit, yet practices for screening and prevention vary drastically between institutions. The authors hypothesized that surveying pediatric residents and nurses who care for patients in the intensive care setting would expose misunderstandings about delirium. They brought to light common incorrect beliefs that benzodiazepines are appropriate therapy for delirium and that children who are delirious will not have memories of the experience. Many nurses and residents listed that they were not comfortable or were extremely uncomfort

Development and validation of nurse's assessment ability questionnaire in delirium subtypes: Based on Delphi expert consensus.

BACKGROUND: Delirium, a common occurrence in clinical work, can be divided into three subtypes according to Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5 th Edition (DSM-5). Each subtype has its special significance and focus. As the primary caregivers and observer of delirious patients, nurses should be able to quickly and accurately indentify each subtype. Therefore, it is necessary to clarify nurses' assessment ability of delirium subtypes. However, there is currently no suitable questionnaire available for investigating nurses' assessment ability of delirium subtypes. OBJECTIVE

Structure and processes of interdisciplinary geriatric consultation teams in acute care hospitals: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Interdisciplinary geriatric consultation teams are implemented in the acute hospital setting in several high-income countries to provide comprehensive geriatric assessment for the increasing numbers of older patients with a geriatric profile hospitalized on non-geriatric units. Given the inconclusive evidence on this care model's effectiveness to improve patient outcomes, health care policy and practice oriented recommendations to redesign the structure and process of care provided by interdisciplinary geriatric consultation teams are needed.
