PATIENTS: In a 15-year period a total of 146 patients underwent surgery for benign hepatic tumors, including 54 focal nodular hyperplasias ( … lar hyperplasia (FNH), complications are rare and malignant transformation does not occur even when observation is employed only. Resection should be restricted to symptomatic or growing tumors with subsequent cholestasis or to cases with uncertain diagnosis.

Involvement of the cardiovascular system in patients affected by acromegaly is an important factor in morbidity and mortality. The diagnosis in these subjects is acromegalic cardiomyopathy with cardiac decompensation, arrhythmias and sudden death. The pathologic substrate has rarely been described. In order to study the biological properties of fibroblasts isolated from different tissues. The fibroblasts from normal skin, hypertrophic scar and keloid were cultured, respectively, in vitro, and their morphologies and growth kinetics were compared. The results revealed that although fibroblasts in keloid were irregularly arranged, crisscross and overlapping with loss of polarization, there was no significant difference in the 3 groups so far the cellular morphology of fibroblast itself, cellular growth curve, cellular mitotic index, cloning efficiency and DNA content provided those cultures

We analyse the details of patients with facial bone fractures who visited us from 1993 to 1997, and compare past cases treated from 1978 to 1992. From 1993 to 1997, the total numbers of patients and fractures were 633 and 697, respectively. Thus, we had 127 patients and 139 fractures annually. The number of patients has increased over the years. The highest occurrence rate of facial bone fracture was in the nasal bone (half of all), followed by the malar bone, blowout fractures and the mandibular bone. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether beta-blocker withdrawal under close medical supervision poses undue risks.
DESIGN: Retrospective case review. Data extracted from previous study.
SUBJECTS: 114 hypertensive subjects tapered from beta-blocker therapy. Subjects were a subset of patients originally studied for blood pressure medication withdrawal and biofeedback training.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Frequency of symptoms and adverse effects reported by subjects during medication taper to the study nurse.
RESULTS: Symptoms were no more likely to occur with beta-blocker withdrawal than with withdrawal

This paper reports on treatment of 62 cases of bradyarrhythmia with Fu Ben Zeng Mai Tang, a decoction of herbal medicine which has the effect of warming and tonifying the heart and kidney, reinforcing qi and improving blood circulation. The result indicates that it is effective for quickening the heart rhythm, improving the symptoms and regulating the function of sinoatrial node. It is also good for regulating the function of endocrine and the immune and nervous system. This therapy was compared with Western medicine in the treatment of 24 cases.

The relations between maternal haemoglobin levels in pregnancy and pregnancy outcomes were examined. The data source for the examination was medical records of 460 singleton deliveries. The high haemoglobin level was associated with increased incidence of toxaemia. Both high and low haemoglobin levels were associated with increased risk of preterm delivery. The mean birth weight of term babies was higher in the low haemoglobin level and was not affected by toxaemia. It is concluded that the high haemoglobin level during pregnancy should be considered another perinatal risk factor.
