Risk factors and outcome of hyperammonaemia in people with epilepsy.

BACKGROUND: Hyperammonaemia is a recognised complication of antiseizure treatment but risk factors leading to individual patient susceptibility and outcome remain unclear. OBJECTIVE: To identify risk factors for hyperammonaemia and investigate the impact of its management on clinical outcomes. METHODS: We carried out a retrospective observational study of adults with epilepsy who had ammonia tested over a 3-year period. Hyperammonaemia was defined as ammonia level > 35 μmol/L. Patients were classified into two groups: hyperammonaemic and non-hyperammonaemic. Association analyses and linear r

Alcohol use and dementia: new research directions.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Alcohol is gaining increased recognition as an important risk factor for dementia. This review summarises recent evidence on the relationship between alcohol use and dementia, focusing on studies published from January 2019 to August 2020. RECENT FINDINGS: Epidemiological data continues to yield results consistent with protective effects of low-to-moderate alcohol consumption for dementia and cognitive function. However, recent literature highlights the methodological limitations of existing observational studies. The effects of chronic, heavy alcohol use are clearer, with

The influence of depth of anesthesia and blood pressure on muscle recorded motor evoked potentials in spinal surgery. A prospective observational study protocol.

For high-risk spinal surgeries, intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring (IONM) is used to detect and prevent intraoperative neurological injury. The motor tracts are monitored by recording and analyzing muscle transcranial electrical stimulation motor evoked potentials (mTc-MEPs). A mTc-MEP amplitude decrease of 50-80% is the most common warning criterion for possible neurological injury. However, these warning criteria often result in false positive warnings. False positives may be caused by inadequate depth of anesthesia and blood pressure on mTc-MEP amplitudes. The aim of this paper is

International Olympic Committee consensus statement: methods for recording and reporting of epidemiological data on injury and illness in sport 2020 (including STROBE Extension for Sport Injury and Illness Surveillance (STROBE-SIIS)).

Injury and illness surveillance, and epidemiological studies, are fundamental elements of concerted efforts to protect the health of the athlete. To encourage consistency in the definitions and methodology used, and to enable data across studies to be compared, research groups have published 11 sport-specific or setting-specific consensus statements on sports injury (and, eventually, illness) epidemiology to date. Our objective was to further strengthen consistency in data collection, injury definitions and research reporting through an updated set of recommendations for sports injury and illn

Comparing rates and characteristics of emergency department presentations related to pharmaceutical opioid poisoning in Australia: a study protocol for a retrospective observational study.

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: Pharmaceutical opioids are an important contributor to the global 'opioid crisis', and are implicated in 70% of Australia's opioid-related mortality. However, there have been few studies which consider the relative contribution of different pharmaceutical opioids to harm.We aim to compare commonly used pharmaceutical opioids in terms of (1) rates of harm, and (2) demographic and clinical characteristics associated with that harm. METHOD AND ANALYSIS: Observational study of emergency department presentations for non-fatal poisoning related to pharmaceutical opioid use. D
