Occupational exposure to vapors, gasses, dusts, and fumes in relation to causes of death during 24 years in Helsinki, Finland.

PURPOSE: Environmental particulate matter (PM) exposure has been shown to cause excess all-cause and disease-specific mortality. Our aim was to compare disease-specific mortality by estimated occupational exposure to vapors, gasses, dusts, and fumes (VGDF). METHODS: The data source is the Helsinki part of the population-based FinEsS study on chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases including information on age, education level, main occupation, sex, and tobacco smoking combined with death registry information. We compared estimated VGDF exposure to mortality using adjusted competing-risks regre

Pesticide Use and Safety Behaviors Among Farmers in Rwanda's Eastern Province: Perspectives from Sector Officers on Drivers, Factors, and Gender Differences.

Growing pesticide use is linked to increased health risks for farmers across Africa, due to factors such as improper handling, insufficient knowledge, and lack of resources. To better understand these risk factors in Rwanda, where the majority of the population and most women are farmers, we held focus group discussions (FGDs) with 31 Sector Agricultural Officers (SAOs) and Sector Animal Resources Officers (SAROs) in five districts of Eastern Province. Among their views on this topic, we identified four core themes among the FGDs of (1) interconnected challenges, (2) shared exposure and health

Parental occupation, occupational exposure to solvents and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and risk of childhood brain tumors (Italy, France, Spain).

The role of parental occupational exposure in childhood brain tumors was investigated in a population-based case-control study grouping 251 cases and 601 controls from three European centers: Milan (Italy), Paris (France), and Valencia (Spain). Parental occupational exposure to solvents and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) during the five-year period before birth was estimated using a job-exposure matrix developed earlier in the same countries. Odds ratios (OR) of brain tumors for each occupation and occupational exposure were estimated by logistic regression, adjusting for child's age,

Personality traits and transition to psychosis one year after the first assessment.

INTRODUCTION: Several studies have identified ultra-high-risk criteria that may characterize an at-risk mental state and predict the transition of psychotic evolution. Personality traits may play a crucial role in this process. AIMS: The current study aims to: (a) explore the evolution of an initial diagnosis over 12 months; (b) assess differences in social and occupational functioning; (c) identify common (trans-diagnostic) personality traits of psychotic risk. METHODS: The sample includes 97 (44 males and 53 females) young adults. They completed an assessment that consists of socio-demogra

Age appropriate restraints for the right front passenger.

This study applies NASS/CDS, GES and FARS data to examine occupant exposure plus injury and fatality rates for belted occupants in frontal crashes by seating position, age and gender. The NASS data was used to examine the distributions by crash severity. The GES data showed that when two elderly occupants (age 65+) were present, the female occupied the right front passenger position 73% of the time. A paired comparison analysis using FARS data showed that, for elderly occupants (age 65+), the fatality risk for elderly right front passengers is 42% higher than for elderly drivers. The NASS/CDS

[Prevention of Occupational Injuries Related to Hands: Calculation of Subsequent Injury Costs for the Austrian Social Occupational Insurance Institution (AUVA)].

MOTIVATION: Occupational injuries cause short-term, direct costs as well as long-term follow-up costs over the lifetime of the casualties. Due to shrinking budgets accident insurance companies focus on cost reduction programmes and prevention measures. For this reason, a decision support system for consequential cost calculation of occupational injuries was developed for the main Austrian social occupational insurance institution (AUVA) during three projects. METHODS: This so-called cost calculation tool combines the traditional instruments of accounting with quantitative methods such as micr
