Recent studies have reported that supernumerary teeth were observed in the maxillary incisor area in several Pax6 homozygous mutant mouse and rat strains. To date, it remains unknown whether Pax6 is expressed during tooth development in any species. The study aimed to analyze the expression of Pax6 during mouse incisor and molar development. C57BL/6J mouse embryos on days E12.5, E13.5, E14.5, E16.5 and E18.5 were produced. Heads from these embryos, as well as from P1.5 mice, were processed for paraffin wax embedding (N ≥ 3 for each stage) and prepared for immunohistochemistry. Pax6 immunostain

In mice, a toothless diastema separates the single incisor from the three molars in each dental quadrant. In the prospective diastema of the embryo, small rudimentary buds are found that are presumed to be rudiments of suppressed teeth. A supernumerary tooth occurs in the diastema of adult mice carrying mutations in either Spry2 or Spry4. In the case of Spry2 mutants, the origin of the supernumerary tooth involves the revitalization of a rudimentary tooth bud (called R2), whereas its origin in the Spry4 mutants is not known. In addition to R2, another rudimentary primordium (called MS) arises

Dr. Bernard Sarnat is one of plastic surgery's greatest laboratory investigators. His contributions to our understanding of modern craniofacial molecular biology are immense. His landmark studies continue to influence the way we approach and treat patients today. This article outlines his classic investigations of the craniofacial skeleton, with particular interest in lower face, midface, and upper face development; cranial suture and cranial base biology; and tooth and dental development. In this article, a brief summary of Dr. Sarnat's investigations are followed by how these data have had a

Although distraction osteogenesis of the mandible in patients with hemifacial microsomia (HFM) before the mixed dentition period is widely performed, long-term follow-up information on dental problems is limited. We evaluated the long-term effect of distraction osteogenesis on dental development by comparing Nolla's developmental stages of the first and second molars between the affected and unaffected sides of the mandible. Forty-five patients with unilateral HFM who received distraction osteogenesis of the mandible between the ages of 5 and 8 years and whose dental status was followed for mo

Comparison of individuals affected by chromosomal aneuploidies with controls has already confirmed the differential action of X and Y chromosomes during dental ontogeny. Permanent enamel and dentin structures are formed during the development of the dentition and these reflect the combined effects of both genetic and environmental factors during the prenatal and early postnatal period. It can provide key information on the effect of developmental assaults such as chromosomal aneuploidy as it is not subject to subsequent resorption or remodelling like other skeletal structures within the body.

BACKGROUND: There is some evidence that the epithelial cell rests of Malassez partition the root surface from the periodontal ligament blood vessels, and may protect the root from resorption.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study was to determine the distributions of the epithelial rests of Malassez (ERM) and blood vessels in the periodontal ligament (PDL) of the developing rat first molar before, during and after emergence.
METHODS: Four Sprague-Dawley rats were sacrificed at two days, one week, two weeks, three weeks, four weeks and six weeks of age. After processing, the maxillae were e

Acrocephalopolysyndactyly Type II (Carpenter Syndrome) is determined by autosomal recessive inheritance. Only some 40 cases have been described. Variable clinical signs have been described including prolonged retention of primary teeth and hypodontia. This paper describes the oral and dental findings in a family containing two affected brothers. The family pedigree is informative, as the mother has had children by three partners. The two affected individuals are full brothers. The first affected brother has delayed dental development, severe hypodontia and small tooth crown size. Mesio-distal

Resection of the odontogenic region or root transection of normal (impeded) rat lower incisors showed that eruption ceased from 1 to 13 weeks when the base of the resected teeth (87.5%) or of the distal segment of the transected ones (86%) reached the alveolar-crest region. When the operated teeth reached the crestal region, the enamel-related periodontal tissues were absent and the periodontal ligament (PDL) was the only periodontal tissue that remained. The PDL of the crestal region may be considered as mature PDL, showing a length of approx. 5-6 6 mm at the mesial face of the tooth, 4-5 mm

The purpose of this study was to examine the differences in the times of eruption and calcification of the permanent dentition between skeletal class III and class II groups. (And also to examine the relationship between the time of eruption and the type of malocclusion) Fifty-three children, ages seven to ten years, were selected. Of these, twenty-six children (twelve boys and fourteen girls) were Angle class III with minus ANB and twenty-seven children (eleven boys and sixteen girls) were Angle class II with five or more ANB. Panoramic radiographs and cephalometric radiographs were used. The

With the invagination of the deep surface of the tooth buds of mouse embryos (15 days of gestation), heparan sulfate in the region of the lamina lucida of the dental basement membrane began to disappear. Subsequently, as the outline of the future dentino-enamel junction, which elaborates the molar cusp pattern, was formed (16-17 days of gestation), heparan sulfate disappeared not only in the lamina lucida but also at the external side of the lamina densa. However, prior to or during predentin matrix deposition (18 days of gestation), heparan sulfate reappeared in the dental basement membrane.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to compare dental development in a group of children with mild-to-moderate hypodontia with a matched group.
METHODS: A study group of 70 children (43 girls, 27 boys) with hypodontia, aged 5.3 to 12.5 years, was matched for race, age, and sex with 140 healthy, normal control subjects. The children's dental ages were calculated by using a modified dental-age estimation method. Differences between dental and chronologic ages were analyzed by t tests, and the correlations between differences in dental and chronologic ages and the numbers of missing teeth we

Rodents have a toothless diastema between the incisor and the first molar, which may contain rudimentary tooth germs. In the lower diastema region of mice at E13, the rudimentary tooth germs, which developed into the bud stage before its removal by apoptosis, was found. The immunoreactivity to tenascin was observed in the condensed mesenchyme around the normal tooth bud and was detected in only the basement membrane in the diastema bud. This result shows that the relationship between mesenchymal condensation and tooth development. The similar patterns of Msx-1 and Msx-2 expression between the

The treatment of an undeveloped (immature) tooth with a carious exposure has been reported extensively in the literature. The main objective of treatment is to provide vital pulp therapy to allow continued development of root dentin in the hope that the root will attain full maturity. A case report is presented that illustrates root development (maturogenesis), not just closure of the apex (apexogenesis). A direct pulp cap was performed after a carious pulp exposure using calcium hydroxide with iodoform paste. The crown was restored with a glass ionomer/composite resin cement.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to observe developing teeth in a lengthened mandible after distraction.
MATERIAL: Ten mongrel dogs with deciduous dentitions were used.
METHODS: A corticotomy was carefully made around a tooth bud and the external distractor (Orthofix M-100) was connected. After a 5-day latent period, distraction was started at a rate of 0.75 mm per day for 10 consecutive days. Then, the lower jaw was stabilized by an external fixation to allow ossification. While the operation was performed on the left side (Distraction group), the contralateral side was studied for co

This study investigated the developmental changes of mandibular permanent canines and premolars in early mixed dentition using panoramic radiographs. Positions of cusps and root apices of the teeth relative to the inferior border of mandible were evaluated. The developmental stages of the teeth were divided into three stages. There were few changes in the inclination of the three teeth. The permanent canine began to erupt before stage 2 and the second premolar began to erupt after stage 2. The distance between the inferior border of the mandible and apices of the three teeth was almost fixed i

All vertebrate organs are formed from several cell types, and it is currently believed that interactions between the different components constitute the most important mechanism in the regulation of organ morphogenesis. In developing teeth morphogenetic interactions occur between the epithelium covering the facial processes and the underlying neural crest-derived mesenchyme. Morphogenesis is accompanied by differentiation of the various dental cell types, including the ameloblasts. Although ameloblasts differentiate terminally and start the deposition of enamel matrix only after the completion
