Improving photosynthesis by scattering hydrogel fiber-enabled volumetric illumination.

Photosynthetic biomanufacturing offers a sustainable route to generate valuable bioproducts by harnessing microorganisms such as algae to convert sunlight and carbon dioxide into biomass. A major barrier to efficient production is that light penetrates poorly into dense algal cultures, restricting photosynthesis to a thin surface layer and severely limiting the solar energy that can be utilized for algal growth and biomass production. Here, we present a material-based strategy to overcome this fundamental bottleneck by deploying bulk-scattering, index-matched optical fibers that redistribute s…

Nerve fibre organisation in the human optic nerve and chiasm: what do we really know?

A recent anatomical study of the human optic chiasm cast doubt on the widespread assumption that nerve fibres travelling in the human optic nerve and chiasm are arranged retinotopically. Accordingly, a scoping literature review was performed to determine what is known about the nerve fibre arrangement in these structures. Meta-analysis suggested that the average number of fibres in each optic nerve was 1.023 million with an inter-individual range of approximately 50% of the mean. Loss of nerve fibres with age (approximately 3,400 fibres/year) could not account for this variability. The review

The origin of rapid changes in birefringence, light scattering and dye absorbance associated with excitation of nerve fibers.

By comparing the time-courses of rapid optical changes in the garfish olfactory nerve evoked by electric stimulation with those of mechanical changes observed at the site of optical recording, the origin of optical changes in the nerve has been investigated. Based on the finding that the time-course of the birefringence change accurately coincides with that of swelling of the nerve, optical changes are interpreted as being brought about by invasion of water into the superficial layer of the nerve fibers. A close relationship has also been demonstrated between nerve swelling and changes in ligh

MR-guided ablation of head and neck tumors.

Interstitial laser-induced thermotherapy (LITT) is a minimally invasive technique for local tumor destruction within solid organs using optical fibers to deliver a high-energy laser to the target lesion. MR imaging is used both for placement of the laser in the tumor and for monitoring progress of thermocoagulation caused by the laser The success of LITT is dependent on the delivery of the optical fibers to the target area, real-time monitoring of the effects of the treatment, and subsequent evaluation of the extent of thermal damage. The key to achieving these objectives is the imaging method…

Design of an Optical Fibre Carbon Dioxide Sensor for Identifying Oesophageal Intubation.

This paper presents a Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) coated optical fibre carbon dioxide (CO2) sensor to enable correct tube placement during tracheal intubation. Tube placement remains an important focus as unrecognised oesophageal intubation can lead to severe health complications. The tip of the optical fibre carbon dioxide sensor was functionalised using the Sol-Gel chemical deposition method and attached to the lumen of the tracheal tube, with the tip placed below the Murphy eye. Tracheal and oesophageal intubation has been conducted on 12 sheep using our CO2 monitoring tracheal tube. Result

Simultaneous degeneration of myenteric plexuses and pelvic parasympathetic colonic nerve in slow transit constipation: A case report.

RATIONALE: Slow transit constipation (STC) is a common disease of which the etiology is still not clear. Multiple hypotheses have been proposed to explain STC, including autonomic neuropathy, disorders of the enteric nervous system and so forth. Morphological abnormalities of the enteric nerves of the colon in patients with STC have been extensively reported, while there have been no morphological reports focusing on extrinsic extramural fibers from the pelvic plexus to the distal colon (i.e., pelvic parasympathetic colonic nerve) in patients with STC. PATIENT CONCERNS: Whether morphological

Structure of tendon causes highly optical anisotropic properties and transport.

SIGNIFICANCE: Tendons are highly anisotropic tissues that exhibit distinct optical properties depending on the direction of light propagation relative to their fiber orientation. Understanding these variations and how to modify them through optical clearing techniques is beneficial for many light-based applications, including photobiomodulation therapy. AIM: To quantify how tendon optical transport depends on fiber orientation and wavelength, comparing light propagation parallel and perpendicular to the tendon's long axis, the axis along which collagen fibers are primarily aligned, and to eva

Optoelectronic system for brain neuronal network stimulation.

We propose an optoelectronic system for stimulation of living neurons. The system consists of an electronic circuit based on the FitzHugh-Nagumo model, an optical fiber, and a photoelectrical converter. We used this system for electrical stimulation of hippocampal living neurons in acute hippocampal brain slices (350-μm thick) obtained from a 20-28 days old C57BL/6 mouse or a Wistar rat. The main advantage of our system over other similar stimulators is that it contains an optical fiber for signal transmission instead of metallic wires. The fiber is placed between the electronic circuit and st

Wilbrand's knee of the primate optic chiasm is an artefact of monocular enucleation.

PURPOSE: The anterior chiasmal syndrome consists of a temporal hemianopia or complete visual field loss in one eye, plus a superior temporal hemianopia in the other eye. The superior temporal hemianopia in the other eye is thought to result from injury to Wilbrand's Knee of the optic chiasm. Wilbrand's Knee is a loop of decussating fibers which detours into the contralateral optic nerve before entering the optic tract. I studied the organization of fibers in the optic chiasm of monkeys and humans to verify the existence of Wilbrand's Knee and to elucidate further the pattern of visual field lo

Release-free electro-optomechanical crystal modulator.

Electro-optic modulation is central to classical optical communications and emerging quantum technologies. High-confinement optomechanical crystal modulators enable microwave-optical transduction through strong optomechanical interactions and offer a promising interface between superconducting qubits and optical fibers. However, their performance is limited by thermal noise from optical absorption. Release-free optomechanical crystals provide improved thermal anchoring but have not yet been integrated into a microwave-optical transducer. Here, we demonstrate a release-free electro-optomechanic…

High-Sensitivity Multitrace Gas Simultaneous Detection Based on an All-Optical Miniaturized Photoacoustic Sensor.

We propose an all-optical miniaturized multigas simultaneous detection photoacoustic (PA) sensor, which is primarily composed of a copper tube, a silica cantilever, and four single-mode fibers. Three single-mode fibers are used as excitation fibers to transmit lasers of different wavelengths, and the remaining one is used as a probe fiber. The volumes of the PA cell (PAC) and the sensor are 36 μL and 71 cubic millimeters, respectively. Pathogenesis of optic disc edema in raised intracranial pressure.

Optic disc edema in raised intracranial pressure was first described in 1853. Ever since, there has been a plethora of controversial hypotheses to explain its pathogenesis. I have explored the subject comprehensively by doing basic, experimental and clinical studies. My objective was to investigate the fundamentals of the subject, to test the validity of the previous theories, and finally, based on all these studies, to find a logical explanation for the pathogenesis. My studies included the following issues pertinent to the pathogenesis of optic disc edema in raised intracranial pressure: the

Acquired and progressive myelinated retinal nerve fibers in neurofibromatosis type 1.

Acquired myelinated retinal nerve fibers (MRNF) is rare. The reported cases occur after optic disk injuries. We describe a case of a patient with neurofibromatosis type 1 and bilateral optic pathway glioma, who after 3 years' follow-up developed unilateral MRNF. Optical coherence tomography of the optic nerve disclosed progressive increased thickness and hyper-reflectivity of the peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer associated with the myelinization process. Although the patient remains asymptomatic, myelinization continues to progress.

Fiber Bragg grating-based three-dimensional human-robot interaction force sensor with high precision and large range for lower limb rehabilitation exoskeleton.

This study presents a three-dimensional (3-D) fiber Bragg grating (FBG) force sensor with high precision and large range, designed to measure 3-D interaction force between human lower limb and lower limb rehabilitation exoskeleton during rehabilitation training. The sensor integrates four FBG-inscribed optical fibers with an elastomer. The FBGs are arranged at 120° intervals circumferentially around the elastomer to measure 3-D force. An additional fiber serves for temperature compensation. The sensitivity and resolution of the sensor are enhanced by introducing a simply supported beam structu…

Antibody immobilization using heterobifunctional crosslinkers.

Covalent attachment of functional proteins to a solid support is important for biosensors. One method employs thiol-terminal silanes and heterobifunctional crosslinkers such as N-succinimidyl 4-maleimidobutyrate (GMBS) to immobilize proteins through amino groups onto glass, silica, silicon or platinum surfaces. In this report, several heterobifunctional crosslinkers are compared to GMBS for their ability to immobilize active antibodies onto glass cover slips at a high density. Antibodies were immobilized at densities of 74-220 ng/cm2 with high levels of specific antigen binding. Carbohydrate-r

Abnormalities of the central visual pathways in Prader-Willi syndrome associated with hypopigmentation.

Patients with oculocutaneous or ocular albinism have misrouting of optic fibers, with fibers from 20 degrees or more of the temporal retina crossing at the chiasm instead of projecting to the ipsilateral hemisphere. Misrouting can result in strabismus and nystagmus. Because patients with the Prader-Willi syndrome may also have hypopigmentation and strabismus, we wondered whether they too might have misrouting of optic fibers. We therefore studied six patients with Prader-Willi syndrome selected for a history of strabismus, using pattern-onset visually evoked potentials with binocular and monoc
