The Olivetti Heart Study: Predictive value of a new adiposity index on risk of hypertension, blood pressure, and subclinical organ damage.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Recently, some studies have indicated that a new anthropometric index, body adiposity index (BAI), could be more strongly correlated with the percentage of body fat than BMI. However, the results on its role in predicting cardiovascular risk were not univocal. Therefore, the aim of our study was to compare the predictive role of BMI and BAI on risk of hypertension (HP), blood pressure (BP) changes, and subclinical organ damage after an 8-year follow-up, in a sample of adult men participating in the Olivetti Heart Study. METHODS AND RESULTS: Participants were 350 untreated

[Multidrug-resistant organisms (MDRO) in patients in outpatient care in the Rhine-Main region, Germany, in 2014: Prevalence and risk factors].

BACKGROUND: Data on the prevalence of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in outpatient care are scarce and those on the prevalence of multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacteria (MRGN) are lacking completely. Therefore, the network on multidrug-resistant organisms (MDRO) in the Rhine-Main region (MRE-Netz Rhein-Main) performed a multicenter study on current prevalence data and risk factors for MDRO. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Characteristics of all patients were obtained according to a modified healthcare-associated infections in long-term care facilities (HALT) questionnaire and s

The Influence of Immunosuppressive Agents on the Risk of De Novo Donor-Specific HLA Antibody Production in Solid Organ Transplant Recipients.

Production of de novo donor-specific antibodies (dnDSA) is a major risk factor for acute and chronic antibody-mediated rejection and graft loss after all solid organ transplantation. In this article, we review the data available on the risk of individual immunosuppressive agents and their ability to prevent dnDSA production. Induction therapy with rabbit antithymocyte globulin may achieve a short-term decrease in dnDSA production in moderately sensitized patients. Rituximab induction may be beneficial in sensitized patients, and in abrogating rebound antibody response in patients undergoing de

A 10-Year united network for organ sharing review of mortality and risk factors in young children awaiting liver transplantation.

Young children < 2 years of age with chronic end-stage liver disease (YC2) are a uniquely vulnerable group listed for liver transplantation, characterized by a predominance of biliary atresia (BA). To investigate wait-list mortality, associated risk factors, and outcomes of YC2, we evaluated United Network for Organ Sharing registry data from April 2003 to March 2013 for YC2 listed for deceased donor transplant (BA = 994; other chronic liver disease [CLD] = 221). Overall, wait-list mortality among YC2 was 12.4% and posttransplant mortality was 8%, accounting for an overall postlisting mortalit

Cancer risk estimates for gamma-rays with regard to organ-specific doses Part II: site-specific solid cancers.

Part I of this study presented an analysis of the solid cancer mortality data for 1950-1997 from the Japanese life-span study of the A-bomb survivors to assess the cancer risk for gamma-rays in terms of the organ-specific dose for all solid cancers combined. Compared to earlier analyses, considerably more curvature in the dose-effect relation is indicated by these computations, which now suggests a dose and dose-rate effectiveness factor of about 2. The computations are extended here in order to explore the site-specific solid cancer risks for various organs. A computational method has been de

Risk for tumor and other disease transmission by transplantation: a population-based study of unrecognized malignancies and other diseases in organ donors.

BACKGROUND: Organ donation may involve the risk of transmittal of unwanted host factors such as infections and malignancy. These may be concealed in the emergent donation process. It may be unavoidable if first observed in a donor postmortem. A number of reports on transferred cancers have been published, but quantification of the risk has never been reliably performed. We report here the first population-based analysis of unrecognized malignancies and other diseases in cadaveric or living-related donors and the possible consequences for the recipients. METHODS: We compiled a cohort of all or

Do low-risk pregnant women with antiphospholipid antibodies need to be treated? Organizing Group of the Antiphospholipid Antibody Treatment Trial.

We identified 19 women who had persistently positive test results for antiphospholipid antibodies who were considered to be at low risk because they had none of the associated signs or symptoms of the antiphospholipid antibody syndrome. They had had no (10/19, 53%) or just one prior spontaneous abortion and did not have a history of thrombosis or thrombocytopenia. Many (8/19, 42%) had had a prior uncomplicated pregnancy ending in a live birth. These women were randomly assigned to receive low-dose aspirin (81 mg daily) or usual care. There were few obstetric complications recorded in either tr

Associations between serum persistent organic pollutants and polycystic ovary syndrome risk: a case-control study with mediation analysis.

BACKGROUND: Persistent organic pollutants (POPs), including organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), are endocrine-disrupting chemicals potentially linked to polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). However, evidence on their combined effects and underlying mechanisms remains limited. METHODS: We conducted a case-control study including 146 women with PCOS and 241 controls recruited from the Affiliated Hospital of Hebei University, China (2023-2025). Serum concentrations of 15 POPs (6 OCPs and 9 PFAS) were measured using GC-MS/MS and UPLC-MS/MS. Associations w

Out-of-fold-guided risk-controlled output calibration for soil organic matter determination using FT-NIR spectroscopy.

Fourier-transform near-infrared (FT-NIR) spectroscopy enables rapid and non-destructive determination of soil organic matter (SOM), but small calibration datasets may produce prediction-range compression and concentration-dependent residual bias relative to reference SOM values. This study presents a safe adaptive output calibration convolutional neural network (SAOC-CNN), an out-of-fold (OOF)-guided framework that evaluates conditional output correction and retains the uncorrected base output when the training-only error evidence is insufficient. In second-cross-fitted output-stage validation

Antibiotic Prescribing Patterns and Risk Factors for Multidrug-Resistant Organisms in Critically Ill Surgical Patients with Intra-Abdominal Infections.

BACKGROUND: Guidelines for the treatment of intra-abdominal infections (IAIs) recommend a variety of potential antimicrobial regimens; however, there is a lack of real-world data documenting prescribing practices and incidence of multidrug-resistant organisms (MDROs). METHODS: A single-center, retrospective study from June 1, 2021 to April 30, 2023, was conducted to evaluate patients with an IAI admitted to the surgical intensive care unit. Patients were categorized into four groups based on the primary gram-negative antibiotic initially prescribed for IAI treatment: piperacillin-tazobactam,

Organ at risk sparing by non-coplanar prone breast radiotherapy on Halcyon/Ethos linacs utilizing breast couch slewing.

Organ at risk (OAR)-dose reductions are needed to minimize radiation toxicity in settings with high OAR-doses, like adjuvant breast and lymph node radiotherapy. Non-coplanar techniques, combined with prone positioning and deep inspiration breath hold (DIBH) techniques, could accomplish this. A planning study was performed in patients requiring left-side adjuvant breast and axillary/periclavicular lymph node irradiation (n = 8). Simulation was performed in prone crawl position using DIBH. Coplanar and non-coplanar short-arc VMAT plans were compared. Non-coplanar plans featured ≤ 20° angular sep

Emboli transport in a full patient-specific aortic tree: Assessment of abdominal organ injury risk during cardiopulmonary bypass.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB), though indispensable in cardiac surgery, carries significant risks of systemic embolization and organ injury. While cerebral and cardiac complications have been thoroughly investigated, the impact of emboli on abdominal organs remains largely unexplored. This study aims to identify hemodynamic and embolus-related factors governing embolic transport to key abdominal arteries during CPB, using computational modeling in a patient-specific aortic anatomy. METHODS: A validated OpenFOAM-based computational fluid dynamics (CFD) framework was in

Modeling Risk Group 4 virus infection and antiviral treatment in microfluidic lung organ-on-chips in maximum containment laboratories.

Development of candidate countermeasures against human pathogens frequently includes nonhuman animal experimentation. Preclinical animal pathogen exposure studies are conducted to model diseases and accumulate preliminary and hypothetically translatable data to inform and justify the design of clinical trial evaluation of countermeasure safety and efficacy. In addition to frequent ethical critiques, challenges associated with animal experimentation include considerable resources needed to achieve statistical power and robustness, replicability and reproducibility concerns, potentially compromi

Artificial intelligence assisted risk prediction in organ transplantation: a UK Live-Donor Kidney Transplant Outcome Prediction tool.

Introduction: Predicting the outcome of a kidney transplant involving a living donor advances donor decision-making donors for clinicians and patients. However, the discriminative or calibration capacity of the currently employed models are limited. We set out to apply artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms to create a highly predictive risk stratification indicator, applicable to the UK's transplant selection process. Methodology: Pre-transplant characteristics from 12,661 live-donor kidney transplants (performed between 2007 and 2022) from the United Kingdom Transplant Registry database wer
