Tooth developmental anomalies in severe combined immunodeficiency disease and juvenile myelomonocytic leukemia: common clinical features and treatment outcomes.

AIM: Human Severe Combined Immunodeficiency (SCID) is a prenatal disorder of T lymphocyte development that depends on the expression of numerous genes. Juvenile myelomonocytic leukemia (JMML), previously known as juvenile chronic myeloid leukemia (JCML), is a rare, myelodysplastic/myeloproliferative disease typically presenting in early childhood. CASE REPORTS: Two cases are described of immunodeficiency disorders, both treated with chemotherapeutic drugs (Busulfan plus cyclophosphamide) before bone marrow transplantation. After treatment, these two different cases showed several similar oral

[Effect of orthodontic force on periodontal healing after autotransplantation: an experimental study].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of the continuous light force to the donor teeth on the periodontal healing after transplantation. METHODS: Thirty-two maxillary and mandibular incisors in four 10-month-old male Beagle dogs were autotransplanted. The pulps were removed in all teeth. The teeth were divided into four groups, one control and three experimental groups. In control group (group 1), the teeth were unloaded. In the other three experimental groups, continuous force (0.49 N) was applied in the 1st (group 2), 2nd (group 3) and 4th (group 4) week, respectively. The dogs were sacrific

Tissue reaction following application of extrusive and intrusive forces to teeth in adult monkeys.

Intrusion has been regarded as a very controversial topic in the orthodontic literature. Although it seems a logical way to handle deep overbite in adult patients who have elongated teeth, reports on iatrogenic damage have led to the suggestion of alternative methods. Considering the disadvantages of these alternatives, it seems reasonable, however, to improve our knowledge of tissue reaction as related to intrusion. Three Macaca fascicularis monkeys were used for the experiment. By means of a segmented arch approach, the upper incisors and the four first premolars were submitted to forced eru

Influence of early myofunctional training on maxillary arch development in children aged 4-7 years with mild oral habits: a controlled pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Thumb sucking, the use of pacifier and mouth breathing in the early childhood may negatively influence the development of the maxillary arch. Myofunctional therapy has become a non-invasive intervention that can fulfil the dysfunction of the orofacial muscles, although the studies on its effectiveness in preventing arch underdevelopment are limited. METHODS: The sample size (n = 64) was divided into two groups: the intervention group (n = 32) where the children were subjected to 12 months of structured myofunctional training and habit cessation counselling, and the control group (

[Prevention of inflammatory complications after surgical extraction of mandibular third molars].

BACKGROUND: Inflammatory complications are the most prevalent problems after surgical extraction of mandibular third molars. The main options for prevention are prophylactic antibiotics usage before surgery or in the postoperative period; a method of postoperative management of a tooth socket, implying healing by primary or secondary closure. Each of the postoperative management types has advantages and disadvantages. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to compare complete suturing versus iodoform gauze packing of tooth socket for prevention of inflammatory complications after mandibular thir

Environmental Factors Associated with Malocclusion in Children Population from Mining Areas, Western Romania.

Our study is based on the hypothesis that the prevalence of malocclusions in children is higher in the mining areas from North-Western (NW) Romania than in other geographic areas. We also considered that the distribution of the different types of malocclusions can be correlated with environmental factors. Therefore, the main purpose of the current study was to assess the prevalence of malocclusions in children from the mining areas in NW Romania. Another purpose was to establish the influence of certain environmental factors such as gender, geographical area of origin, and ethnicity on the dis

Pathologic tooth migration.

Pathologic tooth migration (PTM) is a common complication of moderate to severe periodontitis and is often the motivation for patients to seek periodontal therapy. In this review of the literature, available information concerning prevalence, etiology, treatment, and prevention of pathologic tooth migration is summarized. Prevalence of PTM among periodontal patients has been reported to range from 30.03% to 55.8%. A survey of the literature regarding chief complaints of periodontal patients support these high prevalence findings. The etiology of PTM appears to be multifactorial. Periodontal bo

A novel technique to improve postoperative stability of orthognathic surgical anterior open bite correction using temporary anchorage devices: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative stability is a significant problem in the orthognathic management of anterior open bite malocclusion. The general tendency of modern preadjusted fixed appliances is towards unwanted and unplanned extrusion of the maxillary incisor and canine teeth as the dental arch is levelling. Following surgical repositioning of the jaws, the relapse potential of the extruded anterior dentition will be to intrude, leading to some reopening of the surgically corrected anterior open bite. CASE PRESENTATION: A 19-year-old male white Caucasian patient presented with a clinically signi

Prevalence of Oral Deleterious Habits among children: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: This systematic review and meta-analysis aim to estimate the prevalence of oral deleterious habits in children, providing essential evidence for targeted prevention and intervention strategies. INTRODUCTION: Oral habits such as thumb-sucking, lip biting, nail-biting, bruxism, mouth breathing, and tongue thrusting significantly contribute to dentofacial anomalies, which can potentially result in malocclusions. Understanding their prevalence is crucial for developing early intervention protocols to mitigate long-term oral health complications. METHODS: The review protocol was regist

Association between superior labial frenum and maxillary midline diastema - a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Pediatric otolaryngologists have seen an increased focus on upper lip frenum as a possible culprit for feeding difficulties and the development of maxillary midline diastema (MMD). This increase may be encouraged by parents' exposure to medical advice over the internet about breastfeeding and potential long-term aesthetic concerns for their children. Subsequently, there has been increased pressure on pediatric otolaryngologists to perform superior labial frenectomies. There has been a reported 10-fold increase in frenectomies since the year 2000. However, there is no consensus with

Fluoride in Dental Caries Prevention and Treatment: Mechanisms, Clinical Evidence, and Public Health Perspectives.

Background: Dental caries remains one of the most prevalent chronic diseases worldwide. Fluoride has long been recognized as a cornerstone of caries prevention through enamel remineralization, inhibition of demineralization, and antibacterial activity. However, controversies persist regarding systemic exposure, potential health risks, and ethical debates over community water fluoridation. Previous reviews often focused on isolated interventions, whereas a critical synthesis of mechanisms, clinical efficacy, safety, and public health perspectives is still lacking. Methods: This narrative review

[Age-Related Changes in Occlusion and the Clinical Management and Prevention Strategies].

Occlusion refers to the contact relationship between the upper and lower teeth. Its biomechanical properties influence motor function, most often in the orofacial and cervical regions, and the patient's psychological well-being as well. In this review, we summarized age-related changes in occlusion and the corresponding clinical management and preventive strategies from three perspectives-the functional characteristics of normal occlusion and their age-related changes, the effects of abnormal occlusion on health and the potential neurophysiological mechanisms involved, and age-related changes

Orthodontic treatment for crowded teeth in children.

BACKGROUND: Crowded teeth develop when there is not enough space in the jaws into which the teeth can erupt. Crowding can affect baby teeth (deciduous dentititon), adult teeth (permanent dentition), or both, and is a common reason for referral to an orthodontist. Crowded teeth can affect a child's self-esteem and quality of life. Early loss of baby teeth as a result of tooth decay or trauma, can lead to crowded permanent teeth. Crowding tends to increase with age, especially in the lower jaw. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of orthodontic intervention for preventing or correcting crowded te
