OBJECTIVE: Poor intake of vitamin K is common. Insufficient vitamin K can result in abnormal cartilage and bone mineralization. Furthermore, osteophyte growth, seen in osteoarthritis (OA), may be a vitamin K-dependent process. Computer modeling of 10 patients' computed tomographic scans was used to study the variables affecting hip arthroplasty range of motion before bony impingement (ROMBI) including acetabular offset and height, femoral offset, height and anteversion, and osteophyte removal. We report a 65-years-old man suffering from slowly progressive dyspnea of four years' clinical history followed by dysphagia. Simultaneous clinical, scintigraphic, and macroradiographic assessments were carried out on 32 patients with hand osteoarthritis and the results at entry and one year reported. The presence and growth of osteophyte correlated with symptoms and a positive scan. The scan did not detect the radiographic features of juxta-articular radiolucencies, subchondral sclerosis, or cartilage thinning. Osteophytes, particularly when fast growing, produce pain, a 'hot' scan, and may predict disintegration of joint architecture.

A 39-year-old man with an extrinsic esophageal lesion was found to have an anterior herniation of a soft degenerated cervical disc. Only two cases of symptomatic anterior cervical disc herniation have been reported previously. Dysphagia produced by anterior cervical osteophytes is more common and is a recognized clinical entity. Asymptomatic anterior cervical disc herniation may play a key role in the pathogenesis of anterior cervical osteophytes.

Surgical removal of an intrathoracic tumor derived from a vagus nerve was undergone in a dog with hypertrophic osteopathy. The tumor was pathologically diagnosed as malignant schwanoma. Soft tissue swelling, lameness, and itchiness in four limbs disappeared within 7 days after surgery. The proliferated periosteal osteophytes of the four limbs was progressively reduced with time by follow-up radiography on the 58th day after surgery. On the 710th day after surgery, these osteophytes were greatly decreased as osteopathy, malignant schwanoma.

Cervical disk degeneration (CDD) can give rise to segmental instability and may appear as pain referred to the arm without any evidence of root compression. CDD can give rise to root pressure either by permitting the development of a disk rupture of by provoking the development of a neurocentral osteophyte, compressing the root in the root canal. Such osteophytes may also compress the vertebral artery. Primary treatment is always conservative. When operative intervention is necessary an anterior cervical discectomy and fusion is preferable to a posterior decompression.

This study describes the soft X-ray examinations of 24 lateral tibial plateaus obtained during total knee arthroplasty for varus osteoarthritis. The average thickness of the articular cartilage was 3.5 min and ranged from 2.1 to 5.0. We considered that 21 out of the 24 lateral tibial plateaus had well preserved articular cartilage.
