Effects of HIIT and Sprint Interval Training on Adiposity in Overweight Adults: A Meta-analysis.

A meta-analysis was conducted to compare the effects of high-intensity interval training and sprint interval training on body fat reduction in adults with overweight or obesity. Following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses 2020 guidelines, eight databases were searched, yielding 10 relevant studies involving 343 participants. Both high-intensity interval training and sprint interval training significantly reduced body fat% (standardized mean difference=- 0.56, 95% confidence interval=(- 0.89,-0.24), and p=0.001 and standardized mean difference=- 0.57, 95% confid…

Patellar and Femoral Bone Morphology Is Associated With Overweight and Sports Participation in Young Adolescents.

High levels of physical activity or high BMI during puberty could negatively influence bone and cartilage development. Little is known about the effects of loading on patellar and femoral bone shape in a young population. Therefore, we aim to identify the association between 3D patella and femur shape and biomechanical loading in a young adolescent population. Participants were selected from an ongoing cohort study (Generation-R study). Participants that underwent knee-MRI at 13 years-old follow-up were included. Patellae and femora were segmented from these MRIs and using these 3D models, sta

Digital health interventions to treat overweight and obesity in children and adolescents: An umbrella review.

Digital health interventions can support the treatment of overweight and obesity in children and adolescents, yet primary research and systematic reviews leave uncertain evidence. In this umbrella review of reviews and meta-analyses, we methodologically appraise and investigate the effects of digital health interventions used to manage overweight and obesity in children. Systematic searches were conducted in July 2023 in Medline (Ovid), CINAHL (EBSCOhost), Cochrane, EMBASE (Ovid), PsycINFO (Ovid), Epistemonikos and Web of Science (Core Collection). Reports on experiences and/or effectiveness o…

Eligibility for and practical implications of Semaglutide in overweight and obese patients with acute coronary syndrome.

AIMS: Semaglutide has been shown to reduce cardiovascular events in non-diabetic patients with preexisting cardiovascular disease and overweight/obesity in the SELECT trial. Data on the applicability of these results to clinical practice are limited. We evaluated the eligibility for and practical implications of semaglutide in overweight/obese non-diabetic patients with recent acute coronary syndrome (ACS) from a contemporary real-world registry. METHODS: Patients from the multicenter START-ANTIPLATELET registry (NCT02219984) were stratified to investigate the proportion of patients eligible …

Pasta Consumption and Cardiometabolic Risks in Older Adults with Overweight/Obesity: A Longitudinal Analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Low Glycemic Index (GI) diets improve cardiometabolic risk (CMR) specifically in those with insulin resistance. However, the pros … of white bread/white rice/potato with pasta may help reduce CMR in older Mediterranean adults with overweight/obesity. While such substitutions are feasible where pasta consumption aligns with the local gastronomic culture, the feasibility and potential CMR benefit of such interventions should be confirmed in other populations.

Sexual and reproductive health in overweight and obesity: Aims and visions for integrated research approaches.

Overweight and obesity increasingly affect women in their reproductive phase, during family planning, pregnancy, breastfeeding and the postpartum period. Overweight and obesity are associated with impaired sexual and reproductive health, including increased rates of infertility, pregnancy complications, and reduced breastfeeding rates. Furthermore, maternal overweight and obesity are associated with long-term negative health consequences for the child, such as an increased risk for respiratory and metabolic disease. With the Junior Research Center for Reproduction: Sexual and Reproductive Heal…

Maternal lipids in overweight and obesity: implications for pregnancy outcomes and offspring's body composition.

Overweight and obesity (OWO) are linked to dyslipidemia and low-grade chronic inflammation, which is fueled by lipotoxicity and oxidative stress. In the context of pregnancy, maternal OWO has long been known to negatively impact on pregnancy outcomes and maternal health, as well as to imprint a higher risk for diseases in offspring later in life. Emerging research suggests that individual lipid metabolites, which collectively form the lipidome, may play a causal role in the pathogenesis of OWO-related diseases. This can be applied to the onset of pregnancy complications such as gestational dia…

Clinical Pharmacokinetics of Antitubercular Drugs in the Overweight and Obese Population: Implications for Dosage Adjustments.

The rise in global obesity prevalence has increased the need to understand the pharmacokinetics of drugs in overweight and obese individuals. Tuberculosis remains a significant health challenge, and its treatment outcomes can be influenced by the pharmacokinetic profiles of antitubercular agents. This literature review aims to point out the clinical pharmacokinetics of antitubercular drugs in the overweight and obese patient population, highlighting considerations for potential dosage adjustments. We conducted a comprehensive search of the PubMed US National Library of Medicine from inception …

Prevalence of Oral Diseases and the Influence of the Presence of Overweight/Obesity in Schoolchildren Population in Mallorca.

Background: The pediatric population is one of the social groups most affected by oral pathology, and overweight and/or obesity is increasingly frequently observed. This work presents a study of the prevalence of oral disease in the school population in Mallorca and its relationship with overweight/obesity. Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out with a sample of 718 students aged 5-6 (n = 255), 12 (n = 230) and 15 years (n = 233). The WHO criteria for diagnosing and coding examined teeth and overweight/obesity prevalence values. To explore the differences in data, the mean was analyz…

Changes in metabolic overweight phenotypes over time and risk of nephrolithiasis: a cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Overweight/obesity is considered an independent risk factor for nephrolithiasis, but little is known about its effect on nephrolithiasis according to metabolic health status. This particular study aims to investigate the occurrence of hyperuricemia and its association with other metabolic factors among children and adolescents aged 6 to 14 years who are overweight or obese residing in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. METHODS: In this research, a cross-sectional, descriptive, and analytical study was carried out on 339 children and adolescents. These…

Age- and height-dependent bias of underweight and overweight assessment standards for children and adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Precision in evaluating underweight and overweight status among children and adolescents is paramount for averting health and developmental issues. Existing standards for these assessments have faced scrutiny regarding their validity. This study investigates the age and height dependencies within the international standards set by the International Obesity Task Force (IOTF), relying on body mass index (BMI), and contrasts them with Japanese standards utilizing the percentage of overweight (POW). METHOD: We scrutinized a comprehensive database comprising 7,863,520 children aged 5-1…

Contingency management for smoking cessation for individuals with overweight or obesity: A randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Interventions for quitting smoking and weight control among individuals with excess weight are scarce. Our study evaluated the effectiveness of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) plus contingency management (CM) in this population, and examined whether CM for smoking cessation improved CBT treatment outcomes at end of treatment (EOT) and at 1-, 3-, 6-, and 12-month follow-ups (FU). Mobile health (m-health) smartphone interventions for adolescents and adults with overweight or obesity.

BackgroundObesity is considered to be a risk factor for various diseases, and its incidence has tripled worldwide since 1975. In addition to potentially being at risk for adverse health outcomes, people with overweight or obesity are often stigmatised. Behaviour change interventions are increasingly delivered as mobile health (m-health) interventions, using smartphone apps and wearables. They are believed to support healthy behaviours at the individual level in a low-threshold manner.ObjectivesTo assess the effects of integrated smartphone applications for adolescents and adults with overweigh…
