Myositis is inflammation especially of the voluntary muscles, characterized by localized or diffuse pain, tenderness on movement or palpation, swelling, and/or weakness. The two main categories of myositis include non-infectious and infectious. Infective myositis may be due to a wide variety of pathogens, including bacteria, fungi, viruses, and parasites. A brief account of the various pathogens causing infective myositis is discussed.

An 18-year-old girl with no psychiatric history presented with abdominal pain. Four months previously she had given birth to a healthy baby. On palpation, a painful abdominal mass was identified in the epigastric region, and gastrotomy was performed. A J-shaped hair-wool ball and two large pieces of sheep's wool were removed. No history of trichotillomania was reported.

Rheumatic nodules occur in some 20 to 25% of cases of chronic polyarthritis, and need special diagnostic, in particular differential diagnostic, consideration. They have to be differentiated from numerous other nodules in rheumatoid and non-rheumatoid diseases. To achieve this, palpation, a knowledge of the preferred sites, and the use of such technical means as laboratory and x-ray investigations are all useful.

Upper cuspid impaction is a serious problem that occurs with sufficient frequency to justify diagnosis and intervention as early as a dental age of 8 years. Screening consists of identifying patients who lack a normal cuspid bulge on palpation, with follow-up radiographic evaluation where indicated. Selective removal of deciduous cuspids is a suggested interceptive measure in Class I uncrowded malocclusions.

A new method for localizing ectopic testes preoperatively was investigated in rats. Twenty hours after administration of iodine-131 luteinizing hormone the position of normal descended testes was easily identified by scintigraphy. Clinically, this technique may offer a noninvasive and practical means of locating testes undetected by palpation. The complexity and hazards of the surgical intervention to follow would thus be greatly reduced.

BACKGROUND: The presence of metastatic cervical adenopathy is essential for treatment planning and prognosis assessment. Treatment of patients with head and neck cancer with clinically negative cervical lymphadenopathy (N0) remains controversial. A 46-year-old woman with a known history of acute myeloid leukaemia presented with bilateral breast masses with pain and itchiness. The breast masses were hard on palpation. Mammogram was unremarkable. Ultrasound showed multiple conglomerated masses of heterogeneous hyperechogenicity and hypoechogenicity throughout all quadrants of bilateral breasts. Pathology showed mononuclear cells, suggestive of breast leukaemic infiltration. She was treated with decitabine and platelet transfusion.

While performing thoracoscopic wedge resection of the lung, the location of the lesion is generally identified by visual inspection or palpation. When difficulty in identification of the lesion by thoracoscopy is anticipated, preoperative marking is performed. However, complications and technical difficulties plague current marking techniques. To overcome this problem, we designed a new, safe and easy marking technique that avoids pleural puncture, called the intrathoracic stamping method.

A 10-week-old intact female Australian shepherd dog was presented sternally recumbent, mildly pyrexic, and painful on long bone palpation of both forelimbs. Based on radiographs she was diagnosed with hypertrophic osteodystrophy. Analgesia was provided with intravenous, oral, and topical medications. Approximately 2 wk later she was presented for facial swelling, regional dermatitis, and lymphadenopathy. Canine juvenile cellulitis was diagnosed and successfully treated.

We report on a 24-year-old man who had symptoms suggestive of acute pancreatitis but the diagnosis was Burkitt's lymphoma infiltrating the prostate. He was treated with cytotoxic drugs with a good initial response. Voiding improved and the tumor had disappeared completely on rectal palpation. However, the patient suffered a relapse and, despite intensive chemotherapy, he died a few months later with disseminated tumor infiltration.

Reporting a case of epidermoid cyst of the spleen revealed on suppuration brings the authors to review the classification of epidermoid cyst. These are benign tumors in the main present clinically with left hypochondrium pain and the possibility to palpate a splenomegaly or mass in this hypochondrium. The diagnostic approach includes diverse investigations, in particular a series of radiological examinations; surgical intervention will confirm and avoid complications.

PATIENT CONCERNS: A 41-year-old multipara with tingling sensation in the left axilla was referred for removal of an Implanon NXT which could not be palpated by physical examination or detected by ultrasound scanning. Finally, the device was detected by computed tomography and found migrating to the left axilla.

The value of gallium 67 (Ga) imaging in monitoring lymphoma response to treatment was assessed in 25 patients with Ga-avid tumors and compared to body computed tomography (CT), chest radiographs, and palpation of tumor infiltrated peripheral lymph nodes.
