Pediatric Hypertension: Parent Perspectives.

Clinical practice guidelines for diagnosis and management of pediatric hypertension have been available for decades. Yet, most cases of hypertension in children are undiagnosed. Provider and system-based factors, such as the complexity of diagnostic standards, and a failure among physicians to recognize the importance of hypertension in children, play a role in underdiagnosis. It is unclear, however, how patient and family behaviors impact the diagnosis and treatment of pediatric hypertension. We aimed to explore the perspectives of parents whose children have had multiple high blood pressure

Parental consanguinity in Hong Kong.

INTRODUCTION: Consanguineous union increases the risk of genetic disorders in offspring. The present study aimed to evaluate the prevalence and characteristics of parental consanguinity in Hong Kong, and its effects on pregnancy, perinatal, and child health outcomes. METHODS: Pregnant women in consanguineous unions attending an obstetrics unit at a public hospital in Hong Kong were retrospectively studied. Their pregnancy, perinatal, and child health outcomes were compared with an ethnicity-matched control group of pregnant women in non-consanguineous unions. RESULTS: The overall prevalence

Formerly Incarcerated Parents and Their Children.

The negative effects of incarceration on child well-being are often linked to the economic insecurity of formerly incarcerated parents. Researchers caution, however, that the effects of parental incarceration may be small in the presence of multiple-partner fertility and other family complexity. Despite these claims, few studies have directly observed either economic insecurity or the full extent of family complexity. We study parent-child relationships with a unique data set that includes detailed information about economic insecurity and family complexity among parents just released from pri

Anionic Chains of Parent Pnictogenylboranes.

We report on the synthesis and structural characterization of unprecedented anionic parent compounds of mixed Group 13/15 elements. The reactions of the pnictogenylboranes H2 E-BH2 ⋅NMe3 (1 a=P, 1 b=As) with phosphorus and arsenic centered nucleophiles of the type [EH2 ]- (E=P, As) lead to the formation of compounds of the type [H2 E-BH2 -E'H2 ]- (2: E=E'=P; 3: E=E'=As; 4: E=P, E'=As) containing anionic pnictogen-boron chain-like units. Furthermore, a longer 5-membered chain species [H2 As-BH2 -PH2 -BH2 -AsH2 ]- (5) and a cyclic compound [NHCdipp -H2 B-PH2 -BH2 -NHCdipp ]+ [P5 B5 H19 ]- (6) co

Parent Experience of Neonatal Encephalopathy.

We aimed to characterize the parent experience of caring for an infant with neonatal encephalopathy. In this mixed-methods study, we perform … d found meaning in their role as an advocate. These data offer insight into the lived experience of parenting an infant with neonatal encephalopathy. Primary data from parents can serve as a useful framework to guide the development and interpretation of parent-centered outcomes.

Parental rearing and eating psychopathology.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of the study was to identify the relationship between perceived rearing styles and the clinical expression of Eating Disorders (ED). METHODS: One hundred and ninety-six patients diagnosed of an ED and 127 healthy student as controls selected from the Nursing College were evaluated for general psychopathology (STAI, BDI II, RSE), and for abnormal eating attitudes (EAT, EDI-II, BITE). The EMBU (‘my memories of upbringing’) was administered for the assessment of perceived parental rearing styles and was used a questionnaire to assess familial variables. RESULTS

Parental knowledge of coeliac disease.

AIM: Little information exists regarding parental knowledge of CD at diagnosis. We aimed for assessment of parental information at disease diagnosis to help us develop a tailored coeliac information package. METHODS: Children and teenagers referred for endoscopy and duodenal biopsy, with the sole indication for the diagnosis of CD, were prospectively recruited to the study. Parents were asked information and concerns regarding use of GFD. RESULTS: Sixty-three children (median 6.9 yrs (IQR 3.71-10.94)) and families were prospectively recruited in the study. The parents were very knowledgeable

Parental affectionless control and suicidality.

OBJECTIVE: Although poor parental bonding is a known risk factor for suicidality, current literature is inconsistent about the relative role … rearing. With these differences acknowledged, affectionless control in both parents emerges as the parenting style most strongly associated with suicidal behavior. Common methodological problems included low numbers of subjects, inconsistent control groups, and the lack of a uniform definition of suicidality. CONCLUSION: Despite methodological limitations …

Parental smoking and childhood leukemia.

Childhood leukemia is the most common cancer among children, representing 31% of all cancer cases occurring in children younger than the age of 15 years in the USA. There are only few known risk factors of childhood leukemia (sex, age, race, exposure to ionizing radiation, and certain congenital diseases, such as Down syndrome and neurofibromatosis), which account for only 10% of the childhood leukemia cases. Several lines of evidence suggest that childhood leukemia may be more due to environmental rather than genetic factors, although genes may play modifying roles. Human and animal studies s

The nature of parental supervisory neglect.

The primary purpose of this study is to determine whether different types of supervision problems such as leaving a child alone and leaving a child with an inadequate caregiver have different correlates and consequences for children. A case-comparison design was used to compare four types of supervision problems. Data were extracted from child protective services investigative reports. The results showed that each type of supervision problem had a distinct set of characteristics. Recommendations for assessing and treating different types of supervision problems are addressed.

Counseling parents on feeding their children.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The high-nutrient needs of children for normal growth and development are matched by ready access to low-nutrient high-energy foods. Parents are often confused by new and at times conflicting information. This review discusses three recently published papers that offer specific and important dietary information for school-aged children. RECENT FINDINGS: Lactose intolerance is common in some populations and there are misconceptions about dairy intake. Most lactose-intolerant children can consume some dairy products without symptoms. Fruit-juice intake can predict increased w

Parental genomic imprinting in endocrinopathies.

Genomic imprinting is the phenomenon whereby some genes preferentially produce mRNA transcripts from the gene copy derived from the parent of a specific sex. It has been implicated in a number of human diseases (most of them of endocrine interest), such as Prader-Willi/Angelman syndromes, Silver-Russell syndrome, Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome, transient neonatal diabetes, the focal form of nesidioblastosis, and pseudohypoparathyroidism. Involvement of imprinted genes affecting birth weight and causing susceptibility to type 1 diabetes is under investigation. Recent knowledge about the varied mol

Violence against children by parents.

The study aimed to identify the characteristics and frequency of physical and emotional violence against children by their biological parents and the relationship between children's characteristics, family factors and the extent of violent acts against children. The sample consisted of 212 grade six students in Muang District, Amnatcharoen Province. The data were collected from February 8 to 20, 1999. The results showed that 95.3 per cent of respondents perceived being treated violently by their biological parents, as 76.7 per cent were physical violence and 95.0 per cent were emotional violen

Parental imprinting and Angelman syndrome.

Angelman syndrome is an inherited disorder that includes severe mental retardation and epilepsy. Patients have no speech, puppet-like gait with jerky movements, hyperactivity, disturbed sleep, bouts of inappropriate laughter, a pronounced jaw, and widely spaced teeth. The syndrome results from deletion or mutation within maternal chromosome 15q11-q13. Considerable evidence suggests that the gene or genes responsible for Angelman syndrome are expressed only from the maternal chromosome 15, a situation known as parental imprinting. This epigenetic marking of certain regions of the parental genom
